WTH Black Dust?!
It's been crazy hot so I never turn my ceiling fan off. Well I wanted to dust the walls, ceiling & fan so I shut it off. There is BLACK, I mean pitch black dust on the fan! It looks furry too, like one of those furry black catepillars. WTH is this?! We don't smoke, we don't have a furnace, we don't have a fireplace & we don't live on a busy street. This is seriously freaking me out because I can only imagine this is what we breath in!! The only thing I can possibly think of is that I burn a candle on the coffee table underneath the fan...but I always have and never noticed this before. Is this black mold?!!

I cleaned my ceiling fan the other day (after YEARS of never turning it off) and it has a similar coating on it. The only difference was that ours was gray, not black, but I use Scentsy burners in my house so I do not burn candles. I think it is crazy how much dust can collect on a moving object!!! I will definitely be cleaning the fan more consistently after seeing that!
- Same here. I clean mine close to 6 months and everytime I get that dark dust, just in the living room, dining room and our bedroom the rest of the house doesn't get it.Advertisement | page continues below

Oh okay good, that's a relief!! I know I've cleaned mine since Christmas I just can't remember when...I guess we just have a dusty house. We do have 5 people & had two dogs.
- That definitely looks sooty, your candle probably is to blame. No worries

I have a similar issue but it's also on the ceiling by the a.c. duct. Is it still just dust?
- mPosted 09-06-18I wonder if this could be mold?
- cPosted 07-31-20Any updates as to what caused this? I have a new home and fans were put in well after construction was finished. Moved in 6 months ago. This past week, I have been having black boogers and thought maybe it was from mowing the lawn, but it persisted so I went on the hunt. We noticed that everyone in the house now has black boogers. My fans in the master bedroom and living room (used the most) had thick black furry-like dust. Black as black can be dust. I have had dust in my house, but it has NEVER looked like this. My air filter and air vents don’t have any black residue. I occasionally burn a candle in the living room (not bedroom) so i am stopping that today to see if that makes a difference. If it were black mold I would assume it would be in other places than just the fan (that I have seen so far). In the meantime, I will clean like crazy and hopefully hear from someone soon.
