Down Syndrome Pregnancy

Sandal gap toe

Hi, I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant with a baby girl. I've had the quad test that came back 1/2200 or trisomy 21. I'm also 23 years old. Well this pregnancy has been chaotic since 23 weeks. I've had 4 detailed ultrasounds as well as an mri to rule a red diagnosis. But when I went to an elective 3d/4d ultrasiund I noticed a large gap between her big toe and the others. I've read that this can be a sign for trisomy 21 but no one has mentioned it to me although she isn't technically allowed to. I would assume it would have been detected by the high risk doctor or skilled ultrasound techs before I had the elective one but I could be wrong. Now I'm just staring at her feet wondering if this could be a problem. No matter what her dx is she is already loved more than anything but I want to be prepared. Is this common for ds or can it happen to anyone?

  • Hi! Congrats on your pregnancy! Sandal gap is a trait that some with Ds have--I think about 45% of people with Ds have it. I do hear a lot about people having a sandal gap who do not have Ds and about people, like my son, who does have Ds but does not have sandal gap.

My first question to you would be does anyone on baby girl's mother's or father's side of the family have a sandal gap?

  • Ultrasound is not diagnostic. Many babies with DS have perfectly normal ultrasounds.

    Hi! …

Thank you! She was a surprise but has been a wonderful blessing! Me or her dad do not but I was concerned and my mom sent me a photo of her feet and she has quite a large gap. She said she'll have flinstone feet like her grandma.

  • Ha you sound like me! I obsessed over this picture on the left taken at 25 weeks for a solid 2 weeks wondering if it was a sandal gap and if he had ds. I asked on the ultrasound board and they said it's hard to diagnos from an u/s picture because it just could be the way his feet were positioned. Now it turns out he does have Down syndrome and perfect non sandal gapped toes! Totally ironic!

  • OMG. Every thread should have tiny baby feet.

Sandal toes can happen with anyone. Just more likely with T21.

  • I have a sandal gap. So does my daughter with DS; so when she was born(we had a prenatal dx) and the stupid dr. who delivered her started rattling off the traits she had that were due to DS when he got to "sandal gap" I practically screamed, "Did you not notice my feet that were inches from your head while I pushed her out? SHe gets those from me, not her DS!"

I was a little exhausted. LOL. Sandal gap is only considered a soft marker b/c anyone can have it. It'll make it that much easier to put flip flops on her when she is little. ;)
