Children with Cystic Fibrosis

New to CF - greasy stools/switching enzymes

Hi!
**poo photo ahead, so be prepared!**

My daughter is six weeks old and I’m just learning about CF and all of the medicine and such.

My nutritionist has asked several times if my daughters stools look greasy and I honestly have no idea what that means and no idea what her poop is supposed to look like because eve since she was born it has been all over the board. I am going to attach a couple images below if anyone wants to take a gander at her bowel movements and tell me how you would describe that to your doctor? I’ve sent them these images but haven’t heard anything back - I’m wondering if this is normal poo or not? What’s greasy and what isn’t.

Also, they have talked about switching her enzymes, is this normal to jump around enzymes? She is currently on creyon. They want to switch possibly if her stool looks greasy and like malabsorption - I’m not sure what that would look like or mean!

  • That doesn't look greasy to me. If it's grease there will be a ring around the poo. Also another way to see if she is absorbing her fat is if you use a popsicle stick to scrap it off into the toilet and if it floats then the fat wasn't absorb.

Yes it is normal for them to switch enzymes if the child isn't gaining weight like the doctor wants. Some enzymes work better for different people. Also if you visit the creon or any enzyme's website you can sign up for their nutrition program and they will send you vitamins (which she will need to take if she isn't already) and nutrional shakes like pediasure that she will need to start drinking at around a year so stock up now. Some of the enzyme companies will even send you a card with money for nutrition and/or a copay card.
  • A good indicator of weather my daughter needed a Creon increase at your LO's age was the smell. Greasy poos stink!
  • That looks like pretty normal baby poop to me.

When it's oily it looks shiny like someone dumped a whole bottle of baby oil in the diaper. It can also looks like orange pizza grease when my kids need enzyme dose changes. My daughter is 8 years old (tomorrow!! I can't believe this kid is 8 already!). She's good about telling us if her poop looks "weird" or floats or something. In the toilet it literally looks like separated oil and water. CF poop is also extremely foul smelling, like much much worse than normal poop. We can tell when my kids get super gassy (which is much more foul smelling than a normal toot) or I can tell my son is having an issue before I even open his poopy diaper to change him.

Thank you! Thats super helpful! So with CF, if their enzymes are working well then their poop isn't greasy or smelling particularly foul BUT if they get super smelly or greasy or gassy then you can tell something is off? They aren't smelly/gassy/oily all the time - that's an indicator to you something needs looked into?

Happy Birthday to your little girl!!! :)
