Bitterly cold temperatures expected next week (especially Mon.-Wed.) along with breezy conditions. Highs will be in the 20s with nighttime lows in the single digits to teens. Minimum wind chills as low as below zero degrees. Gloucester County Emergency Management strongly encourages you to:

  • Minimize travel.
  • Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
  • Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
  • Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.
  • Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.
  • Check on the elderly.
  • Bring pets inside.

Deputy County Administrator George Bains works with the "development" side of our organization: Planning, Zoning, Engineering, Environmental, Building Inspections, Utilities... all of the departments that work to safely bring in new additions to our county.

In the first podcast episode of 2025, we look at some of the new businesses and processes that are expected to "cut the ribbon" this year. A Dunkin' has come to Gloucester Point (shown below, opening this week), and there are several applications for development near the Walmart shopping center.

The American Society of Le Souvenir Francais, Inc. has honored Gloucester County’s Historic Resources Supervisor Robert Kelly with a 2024 “Medaille d’Honneur,” or Medal of Honor.

Le Souvenir Francais (French Remembrance) has several chapters dedicated to preserving the memory of French soldiers who lost their lives in war. They memorialize both soldiers whose names are known and those who were buried anonymously. It’s a solemn charge, which in certain ways parallels the work done in Arlington National Cemetery.

Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) is currently looking for volunteers for their Reality Store simulation at the end of the month. For those unfamiliar with Reality Store, it’s a hands-on experience for 8th graders where they are given a family situation (income, marital status, children, etc.) and are asked to use their income to make decisions on things like housing, transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, etc. Volunteers are needed to staff each booth representing one of these expenses to help explain the options to the students. VCE is currently looking for anyone willing to volunteer on the 30th and 31st of January at Peasley Middle School (2885 Hickory Fork Rd, Gloucester Courthouse, VA 23061) to help out at a Reality Store station.

The simulations will run from 9:45-2:30 each day, with lunch provided by the school from 12:00-12:30 each day. For those helping with the first simulations in the morning, we ask that you plan to arrive no later than 9:30.

If you would like to volunteer, but are unable to volunteer for the entire day, and/or can help out one day but not the other, please let VCE know what days and times you would be able to help out. Any time you can contribute volunteering for this simulation would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to get the word out to friends and family.

If you are interested in volunteers, or have any questions or concerns, contact Glenn Sturm at gjsturm@vt.edu.
