Hello everyone! I have been posting a lot of tutorials on my blog and YouTube lately, but most of them are for stitches and different crochet techniques so I can link them to my crochet patterns when needed. I personally think it’s priceless when you are just a click away from the stitch that is new and unfamiliar to you. Sometimes is just hard to find a great video or photo tutorial to solve the crochet mystery. Today’s blog post will be different. Do you remember my video How to work in front/back loops only and How to make a pom-pom from a few days ago? Great! Because we will use the knowledge from these two tutorials to successfully finish our next project.
Today we are going to be making a cute crochet baby beanie. If you are a total beginner, don’t worry. This is a perfect first crochet project for you. This beanie is super easy to make and you can finish it in no time.
There are a few things that you might need for this project. You will need some DK weight yarn for the main part- beanie. I was using Drops Karisma 100% wool yarn. 100% wool yarn can be a bit itchy on the skin. Especially on baby’s skin, so maybe use a Marino or cotton instead. You will also need some bulky weight yarn. Mine is a blend of acrylic and wool. The thicker the yarn the bigger and more fluffy the pom-pom will be. Simple as that. You will also need some measuring tape, stitch markers, yarn needle, scissors and a pom-pom maker. You do not need some fancy pom-pom maker to achieve nice pom-poms. I am using these very basic plastic pom-pom making kit that I bought at my local yarn store. You can even use two disks made from the cardboard or your hand.
Our aim will be to crochet a simple crochet fabric that is 12.5 by 6.7 inches. We will start with a chain and the length of the chain will represent how tall our beanie will be. Measure your chain, make sure it’s 6.7 inches or 17 cm long, if not add or take away few chains. My beanie will have 37 rows of hdc stitches and each row will have 33 stitches. This means our foundation chain will be 33 chains plus one additional chain to lift our first row. We will work in rows and we will work in back loops only.
If you would like to make your beanie bigger, add stitches to the row so your beanie will be tall enough and add additional rows to achieve the circumference of the beanie you need.
You can find an inexpensive beautify designed Pdf version of this pattern in my Etsy or Ravelry shop. This particular pattern is available in all sizes, from newborn up to adult size. So, if you end up buying my pattern, thank you so much, it means a lot. 🙂

YOU WILL NEED
Here is what you will need for this project (These links are affiliate links. Purchasing through this links earns me a small commission with no extra cost to you. So if you decide to purchase through them, know that you are awesome! Thanks! 🙂)
- YARN: I was using two yarn weights; DK weight for the hat and Chunky weight yarn for the pom pom. The pattern was originally made with Drops Karisma yarn. It works great with Paintbox Simpy DK yarn too (HERE!), but Paintbox yarns are all on a thinner side, so I would recommend you to go one size up with the crochet hook. So instead of 4.0 mm crochet hook, tray 4.5 mm instead.
- CROCHET HOOK: 4.0 mm (G/6)
- YOU WILL ALSO NEED: a pair of scissors (HERE!), stitch markers (HERE!), a yarn needle (HERE!), pom-pom maker (HERE!).
STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS
- St/Sts – stitch/stitches
- Ch – chain (How to VIDEO)
- Ss – slip stitch
- Hdc – half double crochet (How To Video)
- BLO – work into back loops only (How To Video)
PATTERN NOTES
- This pattern is written in 6 sizes: newborn (here on my blog), baby, toddler, child, teen, adult (PDF pattern only – HERE!)
- GAUGE: 7 sts and 7 rows in HDC using 4.0 mm crochet hook measure 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2 inch).
- Use stitch markers to indicate your important stitches (first stitch of the row/round, where to start the next segment of the pattern)
- The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
- Skill level: Easy
- Measurements for the newborn size: circumference 31.5 cm or 12.5 inches and high (the length of the foundation ch) 17 cm or 6.7 inches.
- Add this pattern to your Ravelry queue HERE.
CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS
Crochet Baby Beanie Tutorial
This pattern is made in three simple steps. We will start with the main part with will represent the hat, then we will create a pom-pom and we will finish our work with assembling all the pieces together.
BEANIE
We will start with the beanie. What we have to do first is, we have to create a long rectangle. Remember, the length of your foundation chain represents the high or your beanie and the number of rows you make is equal to the circumference of your hat.
If you would like to make a hat that fits perfectly, measure the had of the person first. When you have those measurements crochet the size of the rectangle you need. Simple as that.
I am going to share the pattern for a newborn size here on my blog and the rest of the sizes will be available in the PDF version of the pattern.
Before we start, I would recommend you to use stitch markers. You don’t need a “fancy” plastic ones, you can use a yarn in a contrasting color or even a hear pin. It’s so easy to lose track of the stitches, especially in a very repetitive pattern as this one here.
Create a foundation chain made of 34 chains. At the end of the chain turn and start your first row in the 2nd chain from the crochet hook.
Work in rows and after each row turn the row and start with a new one.
Before you start with your first stitch chain 1 to lift the row to a proper hight.
Row 1: Work 1 hdc into each of next 33 sts. = sts.
From now on work in BLO. If you are not familiar with the front/ back loop technique, please watch you can find HERE first. You will see how easy it is! 🙂
Row 2 – 37: BLO. Work 1 hdc into each of next 33 sts. = 33 sts.
Cut the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.
Take a yarn needle, fold the crochet fabric in half and sew first and the last row of the rectangle together.
Then go on and close the hole on the top of the hat.
POM – POM
1. Take a pom-pom maker and wrap the Chunky weight yarn around it.
2. Take a pair of scissors and cut open the pom-pom along the outside gap.
3. Take some yarn and tie it in a knot around the pom pom. Leave long tail for assembling.
4. Trim the edges of the pom-pom into the beautiful ball.
ASSEMBLING
Now that the beanie and pom-pom are complete, take a yarn needle and thread the yarn tail coming from the pom pom.
Secure the pom-pom on the top of the hat. Create a few extra stitches, just to make sure the pom-pom is nicely attached to the hat and will not fall off very easily.
TIP: You can create two pom poms and attach each to one side of the hat, like two little bear ears. 🙂

I’m a newbie to crochet and started this project, but i keep ending up with more and more stitches! Do i hdc into the chain 1 at the start of the new row?? Thanks!
When you start a new row, the chain one is just so it goes straight, you don’t crochet into the chain one. I hope that helped 🙂
Hi i’m new to crochet and picked this for my first work! However I keep ending up with longer and longer rows. Do I hdc into the chain 1 at the start of the row? Thanks so much!
Hi! Use stitch markers and mark very first stitch of each row. That way you will know where to end the row and where to start a new one. Chain at the end of the row is not a real stitch. It’s just there to help you nicely lift the row. Do not use it to make a hdc into it. 😀 Happy crocheting!
LOVE your baby Beanie!! I made it in pink and it’s adorable. Your site and your pattern is one of the best by far. Is Croby your last name? Please keep the patterns coming. You are so talented.

Hello, if I wanted to make a bigger beanie for an older baby what would the measurements be?
Hi Habeebah

Hi!
Really cute hat.
You give two different circumference for the newborn hat finished fabric piece. One place says 12.5″ and another reads 11.8″?
Thank you, Sharon! It was a typo. The correct measurement is 12.5″.:)
Hi, I’m a bit confused how to close the hole in the top of the hat, could you explain this please?
Please check the video: Baby Beanie – How to close the top 😊
