one of those weird literary adaptations where it's almost a 100% improvement upon the source material by virtue of cutting out all the author's personal digressions, which might not seem like a good thing, but it absolutely is here because said digressions turned out to be rampant pedophilic bullshit which the author marion zimmer bradley also indulged in IRL. this miniseries removes all that heinous shit which made me stop reading the book in the first place despite my interest in its more grandiose themes, and it's better off for it.

being a pre-LOTR TV miniseries, the directing isn't exactly stellar, but the real MVP here is vilmos zsigmond's excellent cinematography which evokes the misty forgotten realms of pre-christian britain…

Marion Zimmer Bradley, the author of the book this movie is based on, along with her child-molester husband, Walter Breen, (Convicted Twice) were pedophiles who molested their own children. (Yes, both parents). Marion Zimmer Bradley in court depositions admitted she knew (for years) that Breen molested MANY children, and even 'rationalized' it and defended him. One of their daughters has recently (along with her brother) admitted being molested, physically and mentally abused by the mother (Marion Zimmer Bradley). She also edited Breen's pedophile book "Greek Love" for the NAMBLA organization. This of course is upsetting to a great many people who worshipped Marion Zimmer Bradley as the Ayn Rand of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy world. At least Ayn Rand's personal life had…

Horny and campy feminist revision of the Arthurian legends, with the excellent 90s medieval kitsch flavour. This is the kind of product that lacks in modern tv

I ordered this on eBay and started watching it before I knew about how the author, Marion Zimmer Bradley, was accused of sexual abuse and helped cover up the sexual abuse committed by her second husband. The incest, secretive nature and scheming of the goddess and the Lady of the Lake, and all the weird sex stuff just comes off as an extension of all that with that knowledge instead of just giving Bradley the benefit of the doubt.

There’s a lot one could untangle from this miniseries… but none of it would be complimentary to the author or her rendition of Arthurian legends. So I’ll just spend my time thinking of other things.

    Why I’d revisit this flick:Not only…

A maioral do filme é a anjelica huston, ela é o verdadeiro destaque e brilho do longa.

Arthurian legend through the perspective of its female roster is a cool idea, but it's basically a big, bloated soap opera. That's not altogether bad, though. There's fun to be had. There are good actors doing good work (you don't often get to see Joan Allen as a bad, bad lady), but there's not much distinction from the original story, and there certainly isn't enough magic. It's a bummer when the best part of a feminist adaptation is the climactic all-male battle sequence. Julianna Marguiles is about to intervene, but she... trips.

Also, it was my own damn fault for getting very excited by "Director of Photography - Vilmos Zsigmond." Dude's clearly just an old-timer trying to keep working and I should not have prematurely expected The Mists of Avalon to look like McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

There is no King Arthur movie that can even compare to this film, and I will stand by that opinion until the day I die.

  • Review by Redrumpanda ★★★

The necessity of cramming a novel into a mini-series means you get a shadow of the complexities and details. A feminist revision of Arthurian legend. Whereas the novel was dry we're treated to action and dialogue. Sort of captures the spirit but I can't say you'd walk away with the same experience.

  • Review by Adam Waldowski ★★

There are a handful of edgy twists to the familiar Arthur legend, including his having a threesome with Gwenwyfar and Lancelot, but there's still not nearly enough intrigue here. It'd be a sprawling tale if told in a straightforward manner, but the many added plots and twists are overwhelming. The entire male cast is a bore, Julianna Margulies's accent is distractingly bad, while Joan Allen and Anjelica Huston make the most of their far too limited screentime. Vilmos Zsigmond's sumptuous cinematography makes this look far more expensive than it must have been.

yeah the amount of incest here definitely beats Game of Thrones and that says something
