Tarleton State Introducing Bachelor, Master of Science Degrees in AI, Machine Learning

Initial courses will be available for first- and second-year students starting January and will open to junior- and senior-level students beginning in the fall.

The Mayfield College of Engineering at Tarleton State University is kicking off its new Bachelor and Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) degree programs this spring, the Stephenville-based university announced.

Initial courses will be available for first- and second-year students starting January and will open to junior- and senior-level students beginning in the fall. The Mayfield College of Engineering is located at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, about 80 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Tarleton State said the cutting-edge field of study is uniquely designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in a technological concentration that is becoming increasingly sought after.

“The introduction of these two new degrees in Artificial Intelligence will establish a robust talent pipeline in a rapidly expanding field essential to Texas’ economy,” Rafael Landaeta, dean of the Mayfield College of Engineering, said in a statement. “Leveraging our strong industry partnerships and an innovative, cutting-edge curriculum, the bachelor’s and master’s programs in AI will prepare graduates with advanced skills critical for driving high-level innovation.”

Landaeta added: “This expertise will support transformative progress across vital sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, cybersecurity, manufacturing, energy and national defense — industries foundational to Texas’ economic resilience and growth.”

Tarleton said the program’s courses give students a broad introduction to AI and the relevant science and mathematics concepts needed to understand the field. That is followed by in-depth study of the main areas of AI, such as neural networks, computer vision, robotics, autonomous systems, and reinforcement learning, Tarleton said.

“The new programs will allow our students to benefit from state-of-the-art computing infrastructure, technical expertise and research in AI and ML available in our college and department,” Mircea Agapie, department head for Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. “These programs will extend our existing bachelor’s and master’s programs into an area that is of great technological and scientific relevance today.”

Tarleton said the AI/ML field offers a wide range of career opportunities across various industries, including positions like machine learning engineers, data scientists, AI research scientists, software engineers, business intelligence developers, and AI product managers.

The university said that jobs in the field are predicted to skyrocket, with the need for professionals in this field becoming more pressing.

A founding member of The Texas A&M System, Tarleton State said it is breaking records in enrollment, research, scholarship, athletics, philanthropy, and engagement while transforming the lives of roughly 18,000 students in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan, and online.
