Bhí sé i gcoinne gaisteoirí agus trádálaithe na Breataine a bhí ag feidhmiú sna Stáit Aontaithe agus i gcríocha. Chreid sé gur chóir go mbeadh seasamh láidir glactha ag an arm i gcoinne lucht na Breataine agus freisin gur chóir a bheith diongbháilte sna idirbheartaíochtí le Meiriceánaigh Dhúchasacha. Ainneoin a bhealach teanntásach agus a aighneas leis an arm, bhí sé in ann conarthaí a idirbheartú idir Meiriceánaigh dhúchasacha agus gheala. Go luath agus níos déanaí, mar ghairm bheatha, thóg sé muilte mealdair, ba mhiondíoltóir agus plandálaí é. Ba é a uncail William Clark a chaomhnóir agus a thacadóir airgeadais. (ga)
