- Jared Cain O'Mara (born 15 November 1981) is a British former politician who was Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Hallam from 2017 to 2019. Elected as a Labour Party candidate, he left the party in October 2017 after allegations of sexual harassment and bigotry, and sat as an independent. Born and educated in Sheffield, O'Mara studied journalism at Staffordshire University before running a Sheffield bar and music venue. He has stated that he has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and hemiparesis, and that he has an autism spectrum disorder. After unsuccessfully contesting several local government elections as a Labour Party candidate, he was elected for Sheffield Hallam at the 2017 general election. In Parliament, O'Mara took lengthy periods of time off for mental health issues, and never asked an oral question in his two-year political career. After missing multiple key Brexit votes for personal reasons, his constituents grew impatient and called for his resignation. O'Mara refused to resign and directly rebuffed the constituents who wanted him to, showing what was described as "vile, inexcusable contempt" for them. He became a member of the Women and Equalities Select Committee, but resigned in October 2017 after the publication of offensive comments described as racist, homophobic, transphobic and misogynistic. He was suspended from the Labour Party later in October following further reporting of offensive online comments made before his election, dating back to the early 2000s. He subsequently sat as an independent MP. It was reported he had been reinstated to Labour in July 2018, a claim he denied. In July 2019, he was accused of corruption and sexual harassment. His office was raided by police soon thereafter, and he was arrested but released without charge. He announced he would take further time off and then resign as an MP after the Parliamentary summer recess, but stood down only at the December 2019 general election. While some MPs urged sympathy for him after he claimed to have made suicide attempts, fellow parliamentarians across the political spectrum criticised his time in office. He was ranked by constituents across the United Kingdom as the 5th-worst sitting MP by a Change.org poll in 2019. (en)
