No matter where you are in the world or what decade it is, one thing remains the same. High school is always going to be a nightmare. That’s the story of Netflix’s latest international series, Derry Girls, and when told through these ladies (and the Irish comedy’s one gentleman) it’s a hilarious one.
Created by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls originally premiered on Channel 4 in January of 2018 and features a cast primarily composed of Northern Irish actors. The comedy follows the life of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), a Derry high schooler in the 1990s who imagines herself to be a worldly writer. In reality she’s an incredibly awkward teenage girl with a family hellbent on embarrassing her, a crush on a boy who doesn’t know she exists, and a delightfully quirky group of friends. Plot-wise it’s a fairly predictable teen comedy. But when combined with this incredible cast, it’s one of the funniest new releases on Netflix.
Whether you’re new to this world of Northern Irish antics or just wondering where you’ve seen a familiar face before, we have you covered. Above is our quick guide to everything you need to know about the trouble-making students of Our Lady Immaculate College. And with six episodes that run for about 30-minutes each, this is a quick binge watch that’s more than worth your time.
