In 2010, DefendDefenders established the Floribert Chebeya Resource Centre with a specific mission: to serve a diverse community of human rights defenders (HRDs) from the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders region. This centre plays a vital role in enhancing the resilience of exiled HRDs, enabling them to pursue their human rights work while engaging in social activities. Its comprehensive approach leverages various resources, including internet connectivity, ICT support, a well-stocked library, and expert research guidance.
The resource centre offers human rights literature alongside essential computer facilities. HRDs can access the internet, benefit from printing, scanning, and copying services, all of which are readily available on-site. Moreover, the center extends its support through DefendDefenders’ Tech Department, offering assistance to HRDs facing challenges with their devices while utilizing the center’s resources.
A significant number of HRDs have frequented the Chebeya Resource Centre, primarily comprising individuals in exile from countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eritrea, Sudan, Burundi, South Sudan, and Somalia. The centre’s impact has been remarkable, witnessing a steady increase in the number of beneficiaries. Notably, it has evolved into a thriving hub that fosters networking and collaboration among HRDs from diverse origins and backgrounds.
