We are proud to present this special issue in the Journal of Enterprise Information Management, dedicated to the current trends in applied artificial intelligence (AI), resulting from the novel research presented at the IEEE conference SKIMA 2019, held in the picturesque Ukulhas Island in the Maldives. As AI continues to evolve and shape our lives, it is imperative to stay abreast of the latest developments and innovations in the field. This issue serves as an insightful and comprehensive guide for researchers, practitioners and enthusiasts alike.

This collection of research papers showcases the breadth and depth of AI applications in diverse fields. From an efficient deep learning model for the classification of thermal face images to a deep learning assisted business intelligence model for cryptocurrency forecasting using social media sentiment, these papers demonstrate the transformative potential of AI in our lives. The selected studies span areas as varied as cultural heritage, cybersecurity, biometric identification, medical diagnostics and the Internet of Things (IoT), emphasizing the versatility and reach of AI.

My gratitude goes to the editor-in-chief, Professor Zahir Irani, whose vision and guidance made this special issue possible. I also extend my thanks to the diligent administration team of the journal, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a seamless and enjoyable reading experience. Last but not least, we owe a debt of gratitude to all the contributors to this special issue, whose innovative research and dedication to the advancement of AI have enriched this collection.
