Kacrack

Kacrack is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. It pierces all enemies with ice damage. Kacrack was removed from the series' spell pool in Dragon Quest V, due to Kacrackle's target range being increased to effect all enemies. The spell would not return until Dragon Quest IX. It is also related to the spells Crack and Crackle.

Localization historyEdit

The Japanese spell Hyadain originally appeared in the third and fourth games. In the Japanese version of the games, Hyadain's position as the second strongest ice spell would eventually be taken by Mahyado and a stronger spell named Mahyadedosu was introduced in the Monsters: Joker series of games, eventually being introduced in the main series starting with Dragon Quest IX. In the English versions of the games, Kacrackle continued to be used as the name of the strongest ice spell even though a new spell had been introduced, while Kacrack would be used as the new English name for Mahyado. In Japan, Hyadain returned in a handful of spinoff appearances, such as The Adventure of Dai, Torneko: The Last Hope, and Dragon Quest Walk.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of SalvationEdit

Kacrack is learned by Mages & Sages at Level 32 in the original release due to a glitch. It costs 9 MP and hits all enemies for 60~80 points of damage. In the Super Famicom remake and its Game Boy Color port, the glitch has been corrected and the spell is learned at Level 26. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior III, it is called IceSpears, while in the Game Boy version it is called BlizMost.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the ChosenEdit

Kacrack is learned by Borya at Level 27 and deals 60~80 damage to all enemies for 8 MP. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior IV, it is called IceSpears.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry SkiesEdit

Kacrack can be learned by Mages at level 40, lacerating all enemies with a raw volley of rasping ice for 24 MP. Its base damage is 80~104 until the caster's magical might overcomes 200, and the cap is 204~227 at 999.

Dragon Quest XEdit

Kacrack is learned by Mages at level 51 and Death Masters at level 77. It can also be learned by jailcat as a monster companion with the Crack Knowledge skill tree for 32 skill points. It costs 21 MP to cast, with the base damage damage 76~88. Higher damage is calculated as (Magical might - 169) x 0.36 + 76~88 for a maximum range of 376~388. The caster's magical might can be pushed beyond 999 thanks to buff abilities, changing the calculation to (Magical might - 999) /4 + 376~388 for a true cap of 501~513 at 1,500 magical might.

As X is a 3D game the ability for Kacrack to harm multiple monsters depends on the proximity of those enemies to the target monster the caster selects when casting the spell. The range for the target is 15 meters, with the spread damage effect extending to 6 meters.

  • In the Offline version of the game, the Hero will learn Kacrack as a Mage at level 51, being the only character who can cast it. It inflicts ice-elemental damage to all enemies.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive AgeEdit

Rab and Veronica will both learn Kacrack at level 44. The spell costs 20 MP to cast and its base range is 104~136 with the maximum range being 224~256 once the caster's Magical Might reaches 323. A Pepped up Veronica can also perform the pep power Sliceberg with Serena as long as her sister has mastered the Crushed Ice skill.

Dragon Quest Monsters: JokerEdit

Kacrack rips into all enemies with a hail of razor-sharp icicles for 12 MP, and will deal up to 206~226. It can be learned from various skill trees.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2Edit

Kacrack deals 95~105 base damage, and will cap at 216~226. It costs 28 MP to cast, and can be learned from all the skills it could be previously. It can now be learned from:

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious KeyEdit

Kacrack requires 22 MP to cast and deals 114~126. The damage range will reach 209~231 at 999 wisdom.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3Edit

Kacrack's attributes are the same as in the previous two games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark PrinceEdit

Kacrack costs 22 MP and is learned via the Crack Virtuoso, Dhoulmagus, Freeze, Frosty Receptionist, Mordegon, Lord of Shadows, Polariser, and Psaro The Manslayer talents. It has a base power of 120 and will deal an average of 220 damage at 999 wisdom.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight BelowEdit

GameDescription
Freezes foes with an enormous blast of ice.[1]

Kacrack is the third tier spell of Jessica and can be learned by investing 16 skill points. After charging her Crackle spell for a short time, she can cast Kacrack, which creates a large burst of ice crystals in front of her that have a chance of freezing enemies for 19 MP.

Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's EndEdit

Dragon Quest TreasuresEdit

Kacrack can be learned by cutie slimes, silhouettes, pearly wights, queen slimes, and tundrackies at level 33, automatically upgrading from Crackle. It deals a high amount of Ice-element damage to all enemies within the area, and costs 21 MP to cast.

Dragon Quest WalkEdit

Kacrack costs 24 MP to cast and inflicts moderate Crack-type spell damage to all enemies. It cannot be learned naturally by any vocation, but rather by equipping certain weapons such as the glumbrella and godbird sceptre. In Japanese, this version is the recurring Mahyado spell.

Another version of Kacrack can be learned by Grand Sorcerers at level 40, costing 22 MP to cast. It also inflicts moderate Crack-type spell damage to all enemies. This version is the older Hyadain spell from III and IV and even uses a similar animation seen in remake versions.

Dragon Quest TactEdit

Kacrack can be learned by Claria at level 48 and can also be learned by slimecicle through Talent Blossoming. It costs 108 MP to cast. It has a range of three squares in front of her and inflicts major Crack-type spell damage to all enemies in a range of three squares horizontally. Upgrading the spell increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to cast. Kacrack can also be taught to any unit with an ability scroll, which can be purchased from the Legend League Season 3 Medal Swap Shop for 5,000 Medals.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of DaiEdit

Kacrack is first cast by Dai on Dermline Island in order to counteract the effects of Hadlar's Kafrizz spell, demonstrating a level of magic beyond his abilities. The sage Marin also casts Kacrack against Flazzard during the battle at Valge Tower, but it proves ineffective, as he is able to absorb the effects of the spell with the icy side of his body. In the series, Kacrack is depicted as a compressed blast of ice-cold blue energy sent forth from the caster's hands.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's BondsEdit

Kacrack appeared as a normal spell for both Matoriv and Nova and as a spell finisher for Popp, with the Luminary Leader being able to use all three versions. Matoriv's version inflicted piercing magical Ice damage over a small area and temporarily raised the caster's Ice damage. Nova's version inflicted magical Ice damage over a small area and temporarily lowered the target's physical and magical defence for a short time. Popp's version dealt magical Ice damage over a wide area. Matoriv's version was unlocked when he joined the party and could be improved further by receiving White Quartz Staffs from Treasure Hunts or from the Shop Exchange, while Nova's Kacrack scrolls could have been received by playing during the "Northern Hero" event or from the Shop Exchange. Popp's version was unlockable by receiving the Siren's Staff from limited Treasure Hunts.

Matoriv and Nova's Kacrack spells are actually named Hyadain in the Japanese version of the game, sharing a name with Kacrack from both Dragon Quest III and IV, while Popp's is named Mahyado.

Enemy versionsEdit

Kacrack has only been used by monsters thus far in IX, where it deals 53~76.

Japanese musicianEdit

Japanese musician Kenichi Maeyamada (前山田健一) has used the pseudonym "ヒャダイン"(the Japanese name for Kacrack), in addition to his real name. He chose that name because he found the uselessness of Kacrack (in Dragon Quest III and IV) ironic and fun.[2]
