Recap: Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, Episode 7 – Operation Seasoning
The Rangers have already arrived outside Earth’s orbit. Zayto had slept the entire ride over. So the others introduce their plan, Operation Seasoning, to him. Once they send Tarrick the signal, the spy will sabotage Squillia’s ship. And their two Megazords waiting just outside the force field can then attack and free all the Ranger teams.
Turns out Heckyl is the spy. Tarrick gives him the signal and he reveals himself to Squillia and Omwhyzo. He morphs to Dino Charge Dark Ranger and says he enjoyed a traditional redemption arc in the comics, leading to him becoming a Ranger. Omwhyzo summons Zentinels and they battle Heckyl.
The Rangers wonder what the hold up is. Squillia is able to tie Heckyl up and toss him on the floor. But the Rangers push through the force field anyway. Unfortunately, the force field disables the zords and they freefall into the city.
The Zentinels capture the others while Zayto and Aiyon land nearby, Zayto sends the zords back to repair themselves by reversing time. Tarrick finds them, but Zayto feels weak again. Tarrick teleports them to their hideout.
Solon arrives and joins Aiyon by Zayto’s side. Zayto wakes up and Solon says that magic is taking too much of a toll on his body. Aiyon asks Zayto how the Morphin Masters bringing him back to life worked. They realize that the magic used by the Morphin Masters to revive him might run out. Zayto confirms that is indeed the case and he is on borrowed time.
Just then, Pop-Pop arrives with transporters from General Shaw and Grid Battleforce. They will use them to teleport a Mega Squidrill which will then overwhelm the prison shield systems, allowing prisoners to escape while also disarming the anti-zord force field.
Solon finds the best points of triangulation for the transporters. Zayto offers to use magic to create a distraction. But Aiyon and Solon take Zayto aside to ask him not to push himself. Zayto understands what they are saying, but he asks them to respect his decision and to trust him to use magic to save everyone.
Zayto says the Morphin Masters will surely find a way to save him once they save them. Aiyon and Solon reluctantly understand his feelings.
For the distraction, Zayto embiggens Solon. That allows Aiyon to position the transporters. When he gets back to Zayto, he collapses. Aiyon activates the transporters and the Mega Squidrill gets dropped onto the prison.
Solon takes Zayto back to base and Aiyon joins the others who have just run out of the prison along with the other freed people. Mama and Papa Garcia reunite with their children while Amelia runs to her PopPop.
The Garcia Sibs tell Mama and Papa Garcia to get to safety.
Squillia and Omwhyzo pop down to face the Rangers as they morph along with Billy and Heckyl. They battle.
Billy suggests they destroy the Squidrills to stop the Zentinel creation. Amelia and the others hop into their zords. Tarrick joins Billy and Heckyl and he is able to kill Omwhyzo himself without even morphing.
Billy is able to subdue Squillia and they take her inside the resistance hideout.
After the other Rangers wrap up the Squidrills, they head to the base and celebrate their win.
They get a call from Tarrick and he shows them they have Squillia captured.
Episode Thoughts
An interesting episode. Feeling like a climactic battle, but it’s only Episode 7 of 10. I really think it would’ve been better to have watched all ten episodes in one sitting. But I was never going to do that. Lol
Still, this was a good and exciting episode. Probably some of the best action sequences of the season so far.
And I very much enjoyed the scene with Solon and Aiyon expressing their worry for a dying Zayto.
I think that scene really best exemplifies how this season does not follow the Power Rangers formula. Cosmic Fury is not afraid to go against typical PR conventions. Such as those regarding death and heroes-turned-villains, etc. So that’s a good and refreshing aspect to the season. Would I ever want to see that every season? No. But it works for this, what is essentially a miniseries.
Interesting though because before I watched this season, I got the impression that there would be a lot of space-focused stuff. More like In Space or Lost Galaxy or yes, like Kyuranger. But we didn’t really get much of that. Or I guess it didn’t feel that way since them getting stranded on a planet far far away, but yet still able to teleport to other Earth-looking planets didn’t really give the feeling of “space travels”.
Anyway, I actually guffawed at Squillia’s “What the Heckyl?!” Squillia’s helped to give this season its comic relief. And I’m kind of glad they did not kill her!
Overall, one of this season’s better episodes.
