about
This Bhajan reminds me of one of the most popular temples in the sacred city of Vrindavana, dedicated to Lord Krishna. Thousands of pilgrims flock to the Temple every day to have vision of the merciful deity of Bankey Bihari. It is said that if one looks into the eyes of the Bihariji for too long one will go into trance, so the temple priests close the curtains regularly. And each time the curtains open, all the pilgrims exclaim, “BANKEY BIHARIJI KI JAI!!!”
In the 15th century the great saint and devotee of Radha Krishna, Haridas, performed his bhajan in the groves of Vrindavana. He composed love songs to his lords Radha Krishna and and sang them, while hidden in the groves. One day with their guru’s permission, hes disciples followed him into the groves to hear his bhajan. In a blinding light the divine couple, Radha Krishna, appeared before them. Their incredible beauty dumbfounded the disciples. Haridas asked the Lords manifest, so They agreed to merge to become the Deity of Bankey Bihari, and have been worshiped with great devotion since then.
Bankey means bent or curved, referring to the ‘three fold bending form’ that Krishna stands in while playing His flute. Bihari means enjoyer, of which Krishna is the original!
lyrics
Bankey Bihari ki jai, bolo
Bankey Bihari ki jai
Bankey Bihari lal, teri jai ho me
Jai ho me, tere jai ho me
teri jai ho me, tere jai ho me
Bankey Bihari lal, teri jai ho me
All glories to Bankey Bihari, say it again and again, all glories to Bankey Bihari !
Bankey Bihari is so endearing, I worship and glorify Him again and again.
