As the holy month of fasting for Muslims, Ramzan, comes to an end, the preparations for Eid -ul-Fitr begin. “We have spent an entire month fasting, now we will celebrate Eid,” says 17-year-old Shahida Hussain from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The joyous festival, which symbolises peace and brotherhood, is being celebrated across the country on Saturday, with the exception of Kerala that celebrated Eid on Friday.
Eid in English means festival and ul- Fitr stands for breaking fast. Eid -ul-Fitr literally means the festival of breaking fast.

Why Roza (fast) during Ramzan?
There are five pillars of Islam. 1. Shahada 2. Salah 3. Roza (Fasting) 4. Zakat 5. Hajj. This is why it is necessary for every Muslim to fast. The main purpose is to understand the discomfort and agony of the poor and underprivileged.
Ramzan is a month of fasting from dawn to sunset. The pre-dawn meal before the fast is called the suhur, while the meal at sunset that breaks the fast is the iftar, the Maulana says.

What should be avoided while fasting (Roza)?
Nothing can be consumed during daytime, not even water should be taken. Pork products and alcohol can’t be consumed. Sex is strictly prohibited during daytime i.e. while doing fast. Backbiting and violence is prohibited the entire month

What if someone is left hungry?
"It is very important for one to share whatever they eat at the time of Iftar, which is the meal eater to break one's fast. It doesn't matter if the person around you is Hindu or Christian. If they are hungry, they must not be ignored while one breaks fast. If this happens it is called 'haram' which means that the entire fast becomes worthless. No one should be left hungry intentionally at the time of iftar," says the Maulana.
