"The opposite is confidence. Self-confidence is confidence in oneself, i.e. in one's abilities and worth, including the abilitiy to cope with one's limitations and problems. Unjustified confidence can cause problems."

Is there any way to prove that fear actually exists? Shouldn't we consider that there is no real basis for this idea? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Climenole (talk • contribs) 09:10, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

:Well, fear actually exits, e.g., children, children feel fear, but not explicitly, despite of you easily detecting fear in someone, after all, are feelings, and varies from person-to-person.
:So the idea of fear can be eradicated or be generalized in some way, because it is an extremely sensible subject, too sensible for pisicology.
:The fear it's a feeling that somehow occurs to warn you of danger, or when you feel yourself when danger, as the so-called "phobias".
:Example: Claustrophobia is fear of closed, limited spaces, like elevators, a lot of people are afraid of elevators, because they think it is dangerous. WK:CLAUSTROPHOBIA.
:In other words, the consensus, as expected, is that fear does exist and it is essential to study it. 177.105.90.10 (talk) 15:22, 30 May 2024 (UTC)

IS this necessary to put on the article of fear? I sense indirect slander instead of contributing to the article. A more general picture should be used instead or none at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Transkar (talk • contribs) 08:35, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
That picture is disgraceful and should be removed- what is wrong with you people? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.111.94.208 (talk) 16:53, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

This picture violates the rule of representing information fairly, proportionately, and, as far as possible, without editorial bias. Its use is making an statement and showing a disproportionate bias against the US army when there are much better examples to show, in general, as on military intimidation all around the world, specially by unofficial militias. Serious question! Some evidence, at least, suggests that animals and humans emit some particular chemical when frightened, and then other ones of the same type can detect it and smell it. Some of the evidence can easily be shown to lie in the realm of fiction. I am absolutely not an expert on any of the particular evidence, but I am pretty sure this might be a very important part of the article that is utterly missing, apparently. :It is a very good question, but unfortunately I don't know the first thing about this. I have also asked your question on Talk:Animal communication. Let us hope some editor shows up who knows more about this. :: Thinkadoodle, I've added a section on alarm pheromones (fearomones -:), which might interest you, after I saw your post and reflected on the common knowledge of "fear is contagious". Absolutely no fiction, ancient heavy hardwired stuff that connects us with all that lives.--Wuerzele (talk) 18:15, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

I believe there is a term "frozen fright" for one of several possible reactions to fear. But I cannot find anything about it in this article. (It seems to focus on causes of fear and not so much on reactions to it. The same with other related articles like Fight-or-flight response and Acute stress reaction. Maybe "frozen fright" is a kind of Paralysis, but that article, IIRC, does not mention it as a reaction to fear in humans.) People are said to have had "frozen fright" reaction during e.g. terrorist attacks and rape. So, is "frozen fright" an established phenomenon, or term? And where in WP should it be described? David A se (talk) 00:51, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
:Okay, now I see it is covered, with the term "freeze response", in the lead and in the "Mechanism" section. Still, is "frozen fright" or "freeze fright" established enough terminology to deserve a redirect to here or to Fight-or-flight response? This word is used in the "Signs and symptoms" section, and the only references I can find to the word are other places that reference this article. Is it even a real word?

The "Causes" section is becoming a kitchen sink
Right off the bat I noticed a couple of problems:

# The "fear of death" should really be merged with the "Death" sub-section of "society and culture".
# Why single out "Xenophobia" when there are innumerous phobias?

I think this section should stick to primary and more general causes rather than explaining every phobia.
