Andrea Arnold discussed that the development of the script and screenplay was through the mixture of improvisation and scripted scenes. The film is known for much of its tones and allusions to intimacy and charm between the separate acting techniques. Arnold has general focus on the strategy of street casting ultimately showcasing the attitude of amateurism and teenage ambition into the general themes of the film. The film has a cast of almost entirely no prior experience to acting with a rather unknown career in the film industry. However, American Honey does include big name actors such as Shia LaBeouf into the forefront of the film casting.

Arnold used a unique casting technique called street casting to incorporate a mix of professional actors and non-actors into the film. Arnold’s process of street casting uses casting

Arnold herself discussed that street casting involved the process of approaching teenagers on their spring break in Panama City, Florida with a general internet casting call for credibility. Once gaining their trust, she would then direct them to auditions in the Panama City Wal-Mart parking lot. Arnold also states that she was attracted to casting in places with lots of public life and would scout places with individuals that a mag crew recruiter would find intriguing.

As with Arnold's film Fish Tank, the process of filming was a combination of improvisation and scripted scenes. As shooting time was limited and the film was shot on the road, Arnold filmed unscripted interactions in the van to add to the naturalism of the film.
After completing casting in Arnold’s extensive cross country roadtrip, she began filming American Honey in a van that traveled in a continuous 12,000 mile long road trip. Arnold preferred the method of traveling with the cast and crew to develop an authentic sense of intimacy within the film. As the film included the constant change in location with scarce amount of time to settle, Arnold took executive decisions to continue the filming of unscripted interactions in the van to add to the realistic themes within the film.
