Coach Bowden was the winningest D1 college football coach in NCAA history until he was outpaced by Coach Joe Paterno of [[Pennsylvania State University]]. However, due to the sanctions handed down by the NCAA on July 23, 2012 as a result of the child sex abuse scandal perpetrated by Jerry Sandusky that plagued Penn State's football program, Coach Paterno forfeited all wins from 1998-2011. This places Coach Bowden, again, as the NCAA division 1 coach with the most career wins.
