From 1888, Schmidt-Ott was at the ''Preußisches Kultusministerium'' (PrKM, Prussian Culture Ministry), officially the ''Preußisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Kunst und Volksbildung'' Prussuan Ministry of Science, Arts, and Culture. For many years, he was assistant to Friedrich Althoff.
