On heritage

Hi Kari, somehow I found your page after looking at some edits. Very nice. About your heritage, and the term "mutt," I use that myself, and sometimes use the description "Fancy Mixed Assortment" (once used to describe a premium grade mix for chocolates, nuts, and candies). Part of the "lack of airtime" thing is that the Conservative Jewish viewpoint on issues is not just one of being "in the middle". Also, one of the problems with articles relating to Judaism in general is that Orthodoxy is portrayed as being the only traditionally authentic form of halakhic interpretation and genuine "Jewishness" in general. As such, it is important not only to make the distinction between movements, but also to distinguish between the practices, beliefs and interpretation in the context of halakha. Moreover, articles about Conservative Judaism just need lots of work. --yonkeltron 00:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I saw the experimental vandal edit to the article. Thank you for rving it. It is sad and it pains me to see that there are there some closed-minded, ignorant extremists that still believe Messianic Judaism is some sort of a vast conspiracy missionary effort (had they attended any of the links of websites about MJ, they would see how profoundly far from the truth that is; they haven't done that of course, perhaps they believe the Jewish Moshiach will corrupt them), rather than the branch of Judaism that it is. I will be making little to no editing until my account, Zorkfan, is reopened in a week. When I return as an editor, one of my first undertakings will be a treatise set forward in the talk page that will give the editors (almost none of whom know a salt's worth about Judaism or Messianic Judaism) a better idea of what MJ is by explaining what groups have no actual connection to Messianic Judaism. These groups include Hebrew Christians, J.f.J., anyone that teaches that the Torah is non-normative, Trinitarians, anyone that attempts to pronounce the Tetragrammaton as part of their doctrine, anyone that teaches that the Moshiach is somehow equal to G-d, and anyone who claims that the Moshiach did away with a part of the Torah as a teaching. Jewish services -text and language

In Jewish services#Text and language, it says "most communal prayers may be recited in any language the worshiper understands" does this mean a halakhically observant Jew who doesn't understand Hebrew or Aramaic but attends an Orthodox shul where no local language is used, is halakhically forbidden to participate in most prayers? If not, what is the exception and what is its halakhic basis? My grandma went to a large and poor orthodox shul in the Lower east side in her youth and according to her most people there didn't know any Hebrew at all.. a Hebrew education was only available to those who could pay for it or who had it in the family, which was very few.

It says certain prayers must be said in Hebrew.. do you have any idea which ones they are.. is it just the Shema? Can you help provide a reference? Zargulon 15:38, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I moved the discussion of the Shema language to Shema. It seemed more appropriate there. In Jewish services the general statement covers everything and restating the principle for selected individual prayers didn't seem to belong there as much as in the Shema article. --Shirahadasha 18:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

What's your objection to describing Israel as a colony?

I editted the Israel article to say that the Zionists intended to establish a colony, and quoted Jabotinsky.

I'm sure you can quote mass fabrications about Israel - I see such things constantly. But I quoted one of the top Zionists, memorialised by Israel in Jerusalem.

These are his words in his own book "The Iron Wall", 1923:

I'm strongly against getting involved in some kind of edit-war, but the evidence for Israel being a colony is clear for everyone to see. Americans and others can travel there freely, and the right sort of settlers are very welcome, with assistance given (Flimsiest of connections needed, eg the Russians). People born there cannot get in atall. This is "colonising" far more extreme than anything that took place under the British Empire (even apartheid South Africa!).

Hi, Karimarie. I notice that you've been adding {{Linuxproject}} to various Linuxy topics. However, speaking as a founding member of WikiProject Linux, I don't think this is too useful for these articles. Since it was started, the project hasn't really done anything of consequence, so I don't think it's advisable right now to stick links up on lots of talk pages. You're correct that the articles are relevant to the project, but I don't believe that the reverse holds. In your Honest Oppinion

Just because you don't like my oppinion (the leading oppinion)about reform rabbis, doesnt mean that you have a right to remove my comments. for starters what makes you an athority on Judaism in the first place? I am jewish since the day i was born, and I studied to be a rabbi, (though I am not a rabbi) You on the other hand have very limited knowledge about judaism, though Im sure you think that you are all knowing about Judaism and its practices, and maybe you even want to be a rabbi in teh Jewish Club called reform Judaism, the problem is that the term rabbi was coined, way before reform Judaism ever existed, so who gives reform Jews a right to change the meaning of the word, and what training is needed, call it a Reform Counsler.

Ohh, maybe its because you are a woman, (btw Judaism doesnt directly prohibit lesbionism, it only brohibits Male Homosexuality).

Please think more about how to be civil

Your comments in the discussion on the proposed deletion of category:anti-Semitic people are intimidatory and a serious breach of Wikipedia:Civility. You really have things the wrong way round. It is not deletion of this category that would be an exception to general practice, but keeping it. You are asking for this subject to be given special treatment. Note that you comment is an example of how often supporters of this sort of category fail to resist the temptation to infer that those who disagree with them are anti-semitic. That habit is intimidatory and it isn't acceptable. So is your completely groundless allegation that the nominator acted in bad faith. Hawkestone 17:00, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

deleted categories

Thanks for commenting on the deletion of the Jewish American businessman category. I hope more people get involved with categories, otherwise the small cabal in-charge will have no oversight, and will be making decisions without being aware of the consequences. Do you know any admin people you can get involved? I have no clue how many people have lost their ethnic tags from their deletion. Thank you for your advice. It's all very well, but "direct violation" of which category guideline? I do not see the word "ethnic" on WP:CAT. On WP:CATGRS it appears a couple of times, but none seems directly relevant. I see where you are coming from about "soapboxing": perhaps in retrospect, despite the severe CFD backlog at the time, I should have relisted it for further discussion, although it seemed clear-cut to me. If I was on the verge of being convinced of your logic, however, I now find that any regrets I have in this matter are actually a direct result of the tone of your intervention which still appears to me to impute base motives baselessly. I will certainly avoid citing WP:AGF in future as you advise. I was insulted because "circumvention of consensus" was diametrically opposed to my intentions. WP:AAGF tells me to "allow for the possibility that one can incorrectly judge another's intentions or assumptions". Were you trying to say that you think you misjudged my intentions? Have I misjudged your intentions or assumptions? If so I am sorry. Have I angered you? I am always sorry to make anyone cross. Please treat these as rhetorical questions. Your revert of Halakha

Why did you revert the removal of the content "(and to some extent within the left wing of Orthodoxy )" This statement was unsourced (hence the {{fact}} tag) An unsourced statement can be removed at any time per WP:V. Such a statement (not its removal) violates WP:OR. Leaving unsourced statements in place and tagging them as opposed to simply removing them is a matter of an editor's discretion. The tag had been there for a while, there was time for people to come up with sources, so courtesy was complied with and removal was appropriate. If you want an unsourced statement which has been removed back in, you need to supply a source. To avoid WP:3RR I'll personally leave things as they are for a couple of days (can't speak for others). The Japanese and the Jews

Kari, given your interest in both Judaism and the Japanese language, you might find it interesting to find a copy of the book "The Japanese and the Jews" by Isaiah BenDasan. I came across this book as a U.S. exchange student to Japan in the 1980s. The author finds many interesting cultural similarities between the Jews and Japanese, along with a few contrasts, and cites geographical and historical factors that may have factored into these similarities/differences. My sociology professor in Japan recommended this book to our class, and commented that while the ideas are speculative and not really academic, the ideas are intriguing and insightful. First, WP:DATE says nothing about BCE and CE being any more or less appropriate than AD and BC. It merely states that both are acceptable within Wikipedia. As for the censorship issue, if you believe CE and BCE aren't a form of censorship than I do believe that your definition of censorship is flawed. If the CE system had a different pivotal year 1 than the AD system, then it wouldn't be a censorship of the AD system. But the CE system does nothing to change that year. The CE system is still based on the perceived birthdate of Jesus, so how is it more neutral if it's still dividing time with that particular religious event? It's all just political correctness (i.e. censorship) gone amok, just like the word "holiday" instead of "Christmas"—both are the obscuring of history for the purposes of "not offending" some people who probably wouldn't even be offended. In a century or so after this PC hype is gone, people will look back and laugh at how we obscured history just for those reasons. Why was AD, BC, and Christmas okay for the past hundreds or thousands of years but all of a sudden now we must pretend they don't exist?. — RunningAway 20:52, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Admin. Antics @ "Category:Jewish-American businesspeople"

Hello -- you may recall that in mid-December 2006 you and many others voted to undeleted "Category:Jewish-American businesspeople" which had been unjustly and swiftly deleted by a rogue administrator in early December 2006; proper debate/voting was not done and huge amounts of data was lost when this category was deleted, many of the people in that category losing their Jewish identity entirely because of this. This particular unjust category deletion happened in early December 2006, see: [2].

This unjust category deletion was later rectified when you along with others overwhelmingly voted to overturn the deletion and relist the category, see: [3]. However, at this time neither admins. nor others bothered to begin re-adding the names that had been lost/merged when the category was originally deleted.

However, the category was not immediately recreated -- it wasn't relisted until many-many days after it had been voted back in to existence, and I had to bug User:RobertG in order to get it relisted, see: [4]. Also, since that category's former data had already been entirely merged in to "Category:American businesspeople" it effectively meant that in order to rebuild the unjustly deleted category the people that had built it up over many months had to start from scratch since a list of the former names in the category were never provided so that users could re-add them. The category nor a list of the names that were formerly in it is no longer available, or this info is only accessible by admins.

Finally, even though the category deletion was properly overturned by you and others, it was renominated for deletion AGAIN on the 10 of January 2007 (only days after it had been recreated) -- it was then deleted 17 January 2007, with NONE of the people that had formerly voted to relist the category voting this time around; see: [5].

I am wondering if there is anything that can be done about this? Are you able to obtain a list of the names that were formerly in the category, or are only admins. able to do that? Can you or someone else try to have the category relisted? Is there a way to undelete the category again, given that it was deleted BOTH TIMES under rather dubious circumstances, with those that voted to undelete it the first time not even knowing to vote the second time or even that it had been renominated for deletion?

Your reversion re Israel

Thanks for explaining your reversion (Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc.)

I don't think you are correct - if I am a Jew, then I can automatically become a citizen of Israel. However, if I am a Muslim, that does not make me a citizen of Iranm/Arfganistan/Pakistan etc.

The only parallel I am aware of was the German situation whereby any German speaker after WWII could automatically get BRD citizenship.

Please will you unrevert your reversions?

You say: A "Jew" is not necessarilly an adherent of the religion Judaism. See Who is a Jew? for more information about that. The point is that Israel being a Jewish state has less to do with the Jewish religion (Judaism) as it does with the defined ethnic groups identified as being compnents of the Jewish people. This is a very legalistic point - it may be that my edit needs refining, but it is substantially correct i.e. Israel is a Jewish state; it is defined by religion; no other state is like this. (By being a Catholic, you can't become a Vaticonian; by being Muslim you can't acquire citizenship of a Muslim state; but by being Jewish/a Jew you can become Israeli.)

Please refine my edit rather than delete it.

Adonai

Adonai is the 1st singular possessive as attached to plural noun (literally "my lords"), while Adoni would be the 1st singular possessive as attached to singular noun (literally "my lord"). Consulting standard lexicons and grammars is not "original research", and the article said "plural" for many months before anonymous IP 130.91.237.167 came along. Unfortunately, my browser doesn't really support input of Hebrew vowel points as text, but look at image Image:Tetragrammaton-related-Masoretic-vowel-points.png -- the little red "T" symbol under the right-bracket-looking letter on the line "Adonai, with its slightly different vowel points" would be a dot (not a "T") if the word were a singular noun with 1st sg. possessive suffix (instead of a plural noun with 1st. sg. possessive suffix) -- and would have the corresponding pronunciation "Adoni". I really don't feel like making up an image with all the typical forms of possessive pronominal suffixes as attached to singular nouns as contrasted with all the typical forms of possessive pronominal suffixes as attached to plural nouns in Hebrew, but you need to consult a reference work with this information before making further similar edits to the article. Deaf-mute

Hi Karimarie. I'm seeking opinions and possible support for an issue in which I'm in a debate with other Wikipedians. I'm trying to change indiscrimant use of the term "deaf-mute" in describing deaf people in general. I really need your help here. ZayZayEM is engaging in troll-like behavior, such as making edits on the very materials I am editing, removing sourced materials immediately after I add them, and so forth. It is a harassment pattern that extends across multiple articles. The main articles involved are:

* Jewish reactions to intelligent design

* Jewish opposition to evolution

* Natan Slifkin

It is bizarre behavior, because I can see no reason why he is even interested in this material. As you and I both know, it is material you have to really understand well to edit. Over the last week, I have substantially rearranged all the materials on Judaism and evolution in an effort to clean up the main Judaism and Evolution page first of all, so that it can be turned into a page that is not dominated by issues (such as the Slifkin affair) that would have undue weight. ZayZayEM has simply made it impossible for me to work. He has followed me from one article to another, demanding arbitrary changes. many of his edits, and his changes, show that he knows very little about the subject, which as you and I both know, is quite abstruse at times. --Metzenberg 16:32, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Mishna

Hi, saw your contrib there just now. My problem here- I'm a decent editor but I don't have a good grasp of the facts. The article as written doesn't really explain WHAT IS IN THE MISHNA very well, so I can't piece that together even after copyediting it. I think it reads more smoothly now as a history of where, when, and why, and has a good amount of context, but I still don't really know what the Mishna is. Speedy deletion of Template:Mishneh Torah

A tag has been placed on Template:Mishneh Torah requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. I see what you mean, the release dates for the Lunatic Festa set are all before the first Saturn version of SSS, but since the official album titles were "Silver Star Story" instead of just "The Silver Star" and that it featured the voice actors from the remake and not the original, I figured it was better categorized as a remake album. GA Sweeps invitation

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are listed as a GA reviewer. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN.
