I'm sure I've seen you reference this essay

WP:TALKINGSOFASTNOBODYCANHEARYOU. Is my memory that faulty? I can't find it, and it's possible the syntax isn't precise. Did you use this a sort of irony? I seem to remember you used the link to represent bullying behaviors. I'm seeing one such user who seems to be wanting to turn the entire AfD process on its head by using such a technique. BusterD (talk) 11:48, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have sometimes used pseudo-links like these as a statement for their own sake, without writing an actual essay. I remember saying something like this, but I can't find it. I think this one was TALKINGSOMUCH... -- but I can't find it either. As for the problem, I've commented extensively at AN/I: [1], and will comment at the RfC also, But don't confuse the reasonable message, with which I am in agreement -- that Deletion Policy is overbalanced towards deletion, and one step towards rebalancing it would be to require some version of WP:BEFORE -- with the unreasonable way it is being over-expressed. DGG ( talk ) 23:23, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, David. I was a debater in school before "talking so fast" became the current style. I feel anything which games the system deserves appropriate response in order to keep the system sound. I appreciate your valid concern about deletion procedures being over-weighted toward one outcome. Thanks for your valuable comments in those forums. Be well. BusterD (talk) 23:37, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes, I had forgotten that context. And so was I, in college--a very valuable experience, especially in facilitating the sort of intercampus experiences only the athletic teams otherwise gave occasion for. But the stimulus is interesting: if I take a turn at NPP, the amount of junk turns me for a while into a deletionist before I catch myself and stop being so unfriendly to all the newcomers. If I take a look at AfD, the number of unwarranted nominations makes me inclined to give a similarly snappy and unjust response to all of them, with the less than rational thought that if I argue against all of them, maybe there's a chance the good ones will make it. Several good inclusionists have run into trouble here falling into such temptation. DGG ( talk ) 23:58, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Your talk at 16 Years of Wikipedia

Heard your lightning talk just now. I support both the "Radical solutions to promotional paid editing" proposals you announced on notability and restrictions on anon editors around companies newer than 1999 foundation. Are there some written proposals to refer to? - Brianhe (talk) 20:43, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

there will be--one of the reasons I gave the talk was to get some feedback about just what to propose, and I am already getting some. Watch this space tomorrow. DGG ( talk ) 20:55, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Combative deletion rebuttals

In the past, most paid or other promotional editors, when their articles have been deleted, have simply gone away and tried again, generally under another username. For a while now, an increasing number of them have been adopting the practice of arguing. Many admins ignore them; my response unless they are ridiculous altogether is to explain why, sometimes in detail. If they are a good faith but promotional editor who simply has not realized, they usually understand, though it sometimes take a second round of explanation. . If they are professional paid editor with any sense, they realise they;re not going to get anywhere, and go away--and try again usually under another name. Zealots with a unpaid COI have very often continued to argue, sometimes indefinitely. The best thing for us to do here is the traditional remedy, to ignore them. Some paid editors are now doing the same, hoping to wear people down. The best technique here is to block them. If they show up for the same purpose again, they can and should be summarily blocked as behavioral meatpuppets--though we usually run a checkuser for possibly helpful additional information. The danger, as has become clear, is catching a good faith but imitative editor. There are only 3 solutions: accept promotionalism , be able to investigate who people actually are, or accept there will be occasional injustice. I will oppose the first as long as I work here, I will continue trying to change consensus to permit the second, and , alas, be forced to accept the third. .. . Draft:WebID Solutions

Hello DGG, back in June you said that you'd take a look at Draft:WebID Solutions; as far as I can tell, nothing has happened since then. I guess that you may have forgotten about this or that you just haven't had the time to have a look. Frankly, I don't like pushing, but please, could you have another look? As you might remember, the draft cites German-language sources that previous reviewers have had difficulties with, which is possibly why these reviewers commented on issues the draft doesn't have and which I thus can't fix. Kind regards, Cyan2021 (talk) 13:40, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

I will take another look. The key question for notability is whether the many references are truly independent in the sense of WP:NCORP. I can read enough German to tell. DGG ( talk ) 09:24, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello DGG,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

I've been struggling, mainly because the GDP seems to prevent my seeing relevant US sites, to find references that prove whether Draft:Ann Wead Kimbrough might pass WP:NPROF. She was a Dean of a faculty at a Florida Black oriented university, so I suspect WP:NPROF is likely to be satisfied, but I can't prove it to my satisfaction. Your opinion

I see you closed this RFC. I read the New York Post every day, and find it more factual than The New York Times, which I read often. And the Post certainly look likes a champion in this Hunter Biden laptop affair, which most of the reliable sources called "Russian disinformation". What's your opinion on the possibility of pulling the Post from the forbidden zone through another RFC? Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:54, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear David, I saw the note on top of this page. Sorry to hear it, hope that things will get better soon. It looks like you won't have time and in that case just ignore this message, but if you find a moment, perhaps you could have a look at this journal article? It suffers from some serious reference bombing. I sampled some sources and they were just in passing mentions, if even that. I'm starting to doubt that this is even notable, as MIAR does not indicate any selective index including this journal. Your expertise would be very valuable here. Contentious topics procedure adopted

You are receiving this message because you are subscribed to updates on the Arbitration Committee's discretionary sanctions review process.

The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.

The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.

This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello DGG,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Sandra Jayat article

Hi User:DGG, I note that you added a Peacock tag to my recently created page Sandra Jayat. My intention was to be neutral, relying on external sources for opinions rather than my own (of course one can in principle be biased in selection of external opinions, but that is bias, not peacockery I think), but I may have slipped up... if you can point to examples of "promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information" I will do my best to fix it or them (maybe could have come in with auto-translated text from French Wikipedia, which I did consult/re-use as a template when I started the article...). In December, the Arbitration Committee adopted the contentious topics procedure, which replaces the former discretionary sanctions system. The contentious topics procedure is now in effect following an initial implementation period.

The drafting arbitrators warmly thank all those who have worked to implement the new procedure during this implementation period and beyond. KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 19:44, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Editing news 2023 #1

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Zenni Optical

Hi DGG. I am planning to create a new article for Zenni Optical, which you fully protected from creation on 14 February 2017. Would you lower the protection to extended-confirmed users or autoconfirmed users? Thank you, Cunard (talk) 00:35, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Hi @Cunard. DGG isn't around much these days, but I'll drop it to extended confirmed so you can create it. I'm sure he'd have no issue with this since you're a well established editor. Star Mississippi 02:06, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much, Star Mississippi (talk · contribs)! Cunard (talk) 02:16, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

((User|Star Mississippi|}. I'm back to a certain extent. It is sometimes helpful to be concerned with about problems in WP rather than those in RL. No objection to a try at re-creation DGG ( talk ) 02:26, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@DGG, oops apologies for stepping in unnecessarily then, but glad you agree with the course of action. Been thinking of you and your family. Hope all is going as well as possible. If I run the Brookyn Half in April, I'll wave.
@Cunard I had a quick look at the deleted histories in mainspace and draft, anything you'd create is much better than what was there, but let me know if you want me to drop the sources somewhere. Star Mississippi 02:31, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
DGG, I am glad you are back and hope you and your family are doing as well as possible. Star Mississippi, If there are any reliable sources in the mainspace histories or draft, I think it'd be useful to have them. Please drop them here or on my talk page. Thank you so much for offering to share them! Cunard (talk) 02:41, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
It turned out there were some RS including SF Chronicle, NYT among the forbes et al, so easier to just draftify it at Draft:Zenni Optical vs grab the links around the prose. Obviously you don't need to take it through AfC but eyelids weren't up for nowiking that all out. Happy editing @Cunard Star Mississippi 03:04, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Being able to consult the sources and the other parts of the draft is useful. Thank you for draftifying it. Cunard (talk) 03:06, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
any time. Standing offer if an admin who deleted/protected an article you want to create isn't around, just ping me. Have a great day. Star Mississippi 14:26, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mar 8: WikiWednesday Salon by Grand Central

The gathering is in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community and visitors from the global Wikimedia Foundation for our WikiWednesday Salon by Grand Central, in-person at Convene 101 Park Avenue in the vicinity of Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal. This is somewhat of a sequel to last year's Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Brunch in terms of the participants, though this time it is an evening event in a different borough.

We may leaven the event with a few impromptu lightning talks, a Wiki-fashion show (yes, really!), and likely an afterparty tour.

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct. In addition, to participate in person you should be vaccinated and also be sure to respect others' personal space, and we may limit overall attendance size if appropriate.

5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

St Giles Centre

Hello, I'm writing to you as you deleted the St Giles Centre page as it was proposed for deletion back in 2007. I think there is enough on the centre and the adjoining bus station to warrant an article. Sources include:

Could you please restore it so I can work on improving it? Thanks for your consideration Garuda3 (talk) 20:16, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, just to let you know I ended up going to WP:REFUND and the page has now been restored. Garuda3 (talk) 17:58, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Jean-Marcel Goger

The article Jean-Marcel Goger has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Only partially translated for well over a year and clearly copy and pasted with no regard to proper formatting. If an article is wanted for this subject, it would be better started from scratch than trying to fix this

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Looking for talk page stalkers

Hello, DGG, it's been good to see your name again recently. I hope things are okay.

I'm here with an invitation to you and your talk page stalkers. The mw:Editing team is working on a new (pre-publication) reminder system. The first version will remind editors to add citations to their content. I'm hoping to find some folks who would put this page on their watchlists: Wikipedia:Edit check and then help them out. They're going to have some questions in the coming weeks/months, and I think they would benefit from hearing from people who are reviewing the edits afterwards, in addition to the people who are making the edits. (Folks who are really interested might also put mw:Edit check on their watchlists, too.)

Passing of David Goodman

David Goodman, user:DGG, passed away Thursday April 6, 2023. David was active in many parts of Wikipedia and had hundreds of collaborators, including in-person outreach with Wikimedia New York City. I am coordinating an obituary for him with Wikimedia NYC and The Signpost. Anyone who would like to coordinate in developing this may directly edit DGG obituary, but please bring discussion to The Signpost newsroom. I will later replace this development message with the link to the obituary. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:54, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • I was fortunate enough to serve with him on the Arbitration Committee in 2015, and while we did not always share the same opinions his views were always well argued and originated from a deep desire to do what was best for the project and its editors. This news has come as somewhat of a shock so I'm still processing it, but it is definitely clear that he will be sincerely missed by many people here including me. • A great loss. David was erudite, kind, driven, and nurturing. It was always a pleasure to speak with him in person. He will be missed. Ijon (talk) 17:56, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • David was one of the Wikipedia editors and admins I respected the most. Even when I disagreed with them, his insightful comments always made me stop and think and wonder if he was actually right after all, and his knowledge about academic subjects might well be one of the best Wikipedia has ever had. I know he worked closely with Kudpung on trying to bring out the best in the NPP / AfC procedures, and that's another thing he'll be missed for. I never met him but I got a chance to meet face to face and chat briefly at one of the NY meet-ups when they were online - I wanted to talk about NPP / AfC a bit but I was distracted by other things, so never got the chance. A sad loss :-( Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:58, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • One of the very best in our community. I feel this loss personally as David was incredibly helpful to me in my early days as a novice editor. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and loves ones. May his memory be eternal. -Ad Orientem (talk) 18:05, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
