Noam Shazeer is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur known for his significant contributions to the field of artificial intelligence and deep learning, particularly in the development of transformer models and natural language processing.

Early life and education

Shazeer received his degree from Duke University, where he studied from 1994 to 1998[1].

Shazeer is Jewish.

Career

Google (first tenure)

Shazeer worked at Google for several years, where he made significant contributions to the field of machine learning and natural language processing.

Transformer architecture

In 2017, Shazeer was one of the lead authors of the seminal paper "Attention Is All You Need"[2], which introduced the transformer architecture. This paper, co-authored with Ashish Vaswani, Niki Parmar, Jakob Uszkoreit, Llion Jones, Aidan N. Gomez, Łukasz Kaiser, and Illia Polosukhin, revolutionized the field of natural language processing. The transformer architecture has since become the foundation for many state-of-the-art language models, including GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers).

Character.AI

In 2021, Shazeer co-founded Character.AI with Daniel De Freitas[3]. Character.AI is a startup that focuses on creating AI-powered chatbots capable of emulating various personalities and characters. The company aims to push the boundaries of conversational AI and create more engaging and personalized interactions between humans and AI.

Return to Google

In August 2024, it was reported that Shazeer would be returning to Google to co-lead Gemini AI project. Shazeer will serve as a technical lead on Gemini, joining the other co-leaders Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals, the company said in a memo to staff[4]. This move came as a surprise to many in the tech industry, given the success and potential of Character.AI.

Impact and legacy

Noam Shazeer's work has had a profound impact on the field of artificial intelligence. The transformer architecture he co-developed has become a cornerstone of modern natural language processing. His contributions have influenced the development of large language models that power many AI applications today.
