The 2012–13 season is Southampton F.C.'s 14th season in the Premier League, their first since 2005, and their 36th in the top division of English football.[1] Having achieved consecutive promotions the previous two seasons,[2][3] Southampton will be looking to retain their place in the Premier League after a seven-year absence from the top flight.

Southampton will begin their pre-season preparations in July with the second annual Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup, which this year features Anderlecht and Arsenal, followed by a two-match tour of France the following week. Further friendlies, against European and English opposition, will follow later in the month, before the league begins on 18 August 2012.
At the beginning of the season the club released six players, with Radhi Jaïdi also retiring from football. The first signing made in the summer transfer window was winger Jay Rodriguez, who Southampton purchased for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £7 million from Burnley.[4][5]
Pre-season
Southampton will begin their pre-season preparations on 14 July 2012 with the Memorial Cup, set to be held on 14 July and feature fellow Premier League club Arsenal and Belgian Pro League winners Anderlecht[6][7] (replacing Scottish Premier League runners-up Rangers).[8] During the tournament, the Olympic Flame will be presented to the crowd.[6][7] The club are then set to travel to a French training camp, and will play two games on 18 or 19 and 21 July, the latter against Evian Thonon Gaillard.[9] Back in England, St Mary's will host Dutch champions Ajax on 28 July and recently relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers on 4 August.[9] The final two pre-season friendlies will be away against Bristol City on 7 August and home against Italian club Udinese on 11 August.[9]
