Metrotown

I've been working on a draft for the Metrotown neighbourhood in Burnaby, BC at my sandbox, and it's almost ready for launch. I'm not sure if the neighbourhood gets primary usage for the name, since the Metropolis at Metrotown mall is often referred to simply as "Metrotown" (and indeed currently occupies the Metrotown article title), so I've been trying to solicit opinions at Talk:Metrotown (with notices at WT:VANCOUVER, Talk:Burnaby and WT:CANADA), but so far IMO there hasn't been enough people chiming in for a consensus to build.

Should I try to involve more users in the discussions, or should I just be bold and request the mall article be moved to Metropolis at Metrotown and start the neighbourhood's article at Metrotown? Thanks. - Hinto (talk) 03:21, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

BTW, do you have a take on why a certain number of film awards lists have been created with the year at the end, per Toronto Film Critics Association Awards 2012. It's more than just this award and more than one editor creating them, it seems to me. It seems pointless, except in places where the year at the end is some kind of recognized proper noun. I see you are doing updating for the new senators. I've updated List of current Canadian senators, but since there is no article for David Wells, I had to guess. I went with David Wells (politician). I created Victor Oh and, as you can see from the link above, Wells. I finished off the provincial and alphabetical lists and Canadian Senate seating plan, 41st Canadian Parliament, and List of senators in the 41st Parliament of Canada. I updated the infoboxes at Senate of Canada (someone else got the table in the body) and Parliament of Canada. Someone else tried to update Party standings in the Canadian Senate, and I fixed it. Hwy 99 "scandal"

Yes, understood, the article has changed since I think it was me who added it long ago, same with The Interior's removal of the same from Seton Portage. Scandalous goings-on not called that by the "reliable" sources are hard to quantify/cite; some material has gone missing from this article, ranging from Nahanee's death after her arrest to the land deals surrounding Eagleridge and elsewhere (including the Premier's personal buy-up of land in the corridor before the upgrading was announced; but that's par for the course on any nearly BC highway for 50 years and more; right back to 1858 in fact)....and also as part of the Olympic cost overruns (far more than the Fast Ferries Scandal; see my recent notes on that talkpage; not really a scandal but citable as one because of the partisan media's use of the term, but which don't discuss their giveaway to political friends as a scandal, even though THAT's the real scandal. Anyways some of what's in teh political scandals articles may have whitewashed content, or content long since removed, as was the case wit the POV fork on the Olympic Controversies section-cum-article (now "cleansed" of local political issues as "unimportant" by the sports people who took over the Fork, and others who dismissed alternative news outlets about corruption and overspending as "fringe sources" even though including names you and I would easily recognize as credible. Highway 99's scandals are complex and largely unexplored in the media; and must remain, it seems, outside of Wikipedia also....Skookum1 (talk) 16:13, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

The rule on Wikipedia is that references need to be to media (newspapers, books, etc.) that are independent of the subject being discussed — so, for example, a newspaper article (e.g. a TV critic's column, etc.) that talks about the cable channels that Shaw carries in the Vancouver market would be an acceptable reference, but a PDF from Shaw's own website of its own channel lineup is not. That's not because Shaw's own channel lineup is likely to be inaccurate, but because it's not coming from an independent source.

Strictly speaking, the material is not under factual dispute; given that the PDF does exist, the information can be plainly seen to be correct even if the link isn't suitable for direct inclusion in our article as a footnoted source, so the statement can't be removed from the article just on the basis of lacking a reference. Help editing, formatting, and uploading pictures

Hi Bearcat,

I chanced upon your user space by searching the history of a page you edited, Ernie and the Emperors. I am creating a new article in my user space about the debut album of band that Ernie and the Emporer evolved into. I have a good deal of information already there, but I could use some help from an experienced user like yourself.

I have a fairly new account, and I'm not able to upload pictures. Mostly, I'd like to add a picture of the album cover, and possibly a picture of the back track listing from the original LP. Also, while I am confident about the information compiled, I could use organization. I am sure there are easier and better ways of displaying information, and I would like to make sure it is up to Wikipedia standards before I submit.

As you may remember, I'm of the opinion that dross of wiki coverage on this person is already far beyond reasonable limits, but this template's addition of a "family" line just strikes me as absurd, given that none of them have articles nor are ever likely to. Adrian Dix article

I just had a look at it as someone had made a minor good faith edit to the infobox which I reversed; I tried to fix a particular line about the back-dating "scandal" which had loaded word in it like "duplicity" and "hefty severance package which was publicly funded" - which are major BC Lib talking points about him and very overblown, also part of a current attack-ad campaign........the bit about his leadership race also seems skewed......but there's nothing else here; for a guy about to become Premier in May (unless Jesus Christ shows up to take over Christy's job) it's a pretty thin article, and what was there seems to have been largely provided by his critics. I know you're an NDP guy but in a different province so no COI-agenda intended here; but I suspect this article is going to be a busy place in the next couple of months and, though there's no grounds yet, is going to need at least a semi-protect. Removed PROD on Don Bleu

I've removed the bio PROD on Don Bleu since he does have sourcing now. Whether or not he's notable beyond that is still slightly in question. I see where he won a regional Emmy and was inducted into a regional hall of fame, as well as received some coverage and hosted a few shows on television. This sort of puts his notability into enough question where I'd say he could potentially pass, but it's still light enough to where I'm not exactly solid on his notability. I've seen people argue against regional Emmys and other local-type coverage. I'm going to leave it for now, but I won't argue if you bring it to AfD. Tokyogirl79 (｡◕‿◕｡) 05:34, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Politician infoboxes?

Hi Bearcat, I just read message you left at User talk:Oafp#MPPs and wanted to say that the info was also useful to me as it touched on a discussion I had with that editor a couple of days ago. As you have seen, he has done a lot of good work lately and I have tried to help him by cleaning up the links and such, but I do have a question I'm sure you can help me with. Should the infobox list the party that the former and succeeding MPPs represented after their name? I took a look at other MPP and MP articles and for the most part I didn't see this being done so when cleaning up, I removed those wikilinks from the infobox, but I thought I would ask just incase I was wrong in assuming this. Support IP/SPA ban

Given what's gone down on Adrian Dix and the heat I've publicly taken for it (since made more heaty in the newer version of the Sun article; see the exchanges between Sunciviclee and myself on the talkpage) I'm fully in support of the proposed ban on IP users and SPAs......where is the discussion so I can "support"?Skookum1 (talk) 08:31, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

In similar context (and though we seem to disagree on details of how to edit that page; but no matter), I likewise think that the articles by User:Sunciviclee perhaps deserve some kind of on-wiki censure. Other than Adrian Dix, mostly Talk:Adrian Dix, he's only edited the Nazko and Boston Bar articles and maybe on other. His userpage is a violation (but then so is mine, but a long-standing exemption because of my complex bio/interests). Where he's editing/"contributing" isn't an article about the Sun itself so technically isn't COI.......but he's definitely a SPA and only joined Wikipedia to try and twist/research dirt on it......and though my userpage has always been honest about my political leanings and I often admit to a COI because of my blogging activities and recuse myself, at least I admit it unlike the SPAs whose actions/edits he claims in the Sun were "restored" when in reality what replaced them was totally new and properly Wikipedian....and while I can out myself, it's not right for another user to do so, especially not on a front page where I'm being portrayed falsely, now, is it? What's the WP: about not taking stuff to the media/outside of Wikkipedia....and considering he's using the Dix talkpage to attack me for opposing the Sun as a "reliable source" when he himself has written a very distorted and twisted-facts article suggests that this should maybe also go to WP:RS as a case in point about why MSM aren't the reliable sources they're held to be. He said in his article that a complaint about me was made on the COI board; certainly one of the SPAs whose actions he was defending/justifying in his article wanted that, but there is no such section (despite his "reliable" newspaper article saying there is) nor was there any notification on my talkpage as is supposed to be the case.....his lecturing me on how to spend my time and saying my focus is only on political leaders and BC Rail is laughable; anyone who's around Wiki for long knows how extensive and wide-ranging my contributions and edits are....yes, a reprimand is called for, but doesn't seem appropriate that I start it.....how odd to have someone start an ANI, if it happens, on my behalf....LOL. Singling out an editor because he was policing SPA activity as if partisan (which they definitely were) and then exposing him in public with false information strikes me as an extraordinary case....some of my friends were impressed but they noted that despite the nice bio in the first version of the first article, it was very much targeted to "get me".......backfired in the real world, I probably have more friends now than I do (powerful) enemies, which I've had in abundance since the BC Mary blog was in full swing and also bc of my troll-stomping at HuffPo and elsewhere.....the latest version of that first article, and the second article which allows no comments, are both decidedly more skewed and biased against me.......and he dares to shoot his mouth off about me being POV and tells me I am spending too much time defending myself against his lies....he sounds just like a troll, really, and in the real world IMO he is, he just gets a column and a salary for it......about the BC Rail trial being among the reasons Campbell was forced to resign (by his caucus, and apparently his wife because of the purported gf having to take the stand...) was in public media, can't remember which; I'll ask kootcoot ('House of Infamy') if he remembers where....there was a caucus revolt underway about all that, the HST and the low/hostile polls were only part of the story.... in his paper and the rest of the MSM, they insist it was just the HST....but then they insist that BC Rail wasn't newsworthy until blog coverage kept it in the public eye and they were forced to cover the trial; even then they didn't do so fully and only cursorily, then spent a lot of column space participating in a bench/RCMP/Crown defamation of Dave Basi, who had been forbidden to speak up in his own defence by the illegal plea deal....Sunciviclee is I think just naive and making excuses for his employer because that's....his job. He doesn't really know anything about such things other than what his editors/publisher give him to think/write.....Laila Yuile tells me he's quite approachable, and he wanted me to call him, but considering the sandbagging his articles have turned out to be, I think it's pretty obvious he's not to be trusted.Skookum1 (talk) 17:22, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

This headline on the April 11 article, the one that doesn't allow comments, says it all about the skewing of news content for POV-pushing, as the Sun and other Canadian MSM are infamous for - "NDP leader Dix at centre of Wikipedia editing controversy" which to the layman who glances at the paper makes it sound as if Dix himself is connected to the editing controversy.....I think I might make "WTF" my new wiki-motto. No doubt the headline and the spin is directed by editors above him, but this is a clear example of editorializing of news, and why the MSM should be reviewed, if case by case, at WP:RS; I can come up with a good 50 instances of major twisting by the Sun since 1980, and that's just from memory. Misleading, conflating, persecuting and more....they still insist that the NDPs mismanagement of the Fast Ferries was a scandal, and so the Wikipedia article is titled that way; but they never use that word for the sale of the ferries for 2% of their cost to party friends.......who'd bid 3 times as much before they were virtually given them...which was scandalous but the Sun never mentions it, while still allowing its columnists to tub-thump about them as an example NDP incompetence.....Skookum1 (talk) 17:49, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Here's a further example of non-RS behaviour where its subtext is that "Memogate" is a major election issue; it's not, though the Sun and the other POV-MSM have been trying to push it to get people to care; hasn't hurt Dix in the polls one bit. This is agenda-pushing clear and simple. Only the BC Libs and their sympathizers/supporters (i.e. the Suns owners and senior editors) are making a big deal out of it.....and wanting the election to hinge on it. Amazing huh? Nobody cares, everyone scoffs (that's the largest polling group in BC, "fuck 'em all" is the general opinion in BC of politics and politicians - and journalists; and there's polls to support that). The twisted world beyond the Granite Curtain makes Rob Ford's Toronto seem like Nirvana.....sorry to vent at length on you userpage Bearcat....I just feel safe around you xxxooo ;-). Hehe. But seriously, he hasn't responded to my calls for retractions though he sure shot his mouth off at me on Talk:Adrian Dix......I doubt his claim that he innocently looked up Dix's article and found the material missing that he wanted to be there; I'm sure he was put to it by one of his editors in respone to a phone call from the meatpuppet master behind the "I am not a Liberal" SPAs....WP:DUCK. In defense of About a Boy Scout

Hi! primary author of the article here, to argue for its existence. :) The article isn't about just "any" episode of the series-- it's existence is notable within the world of politics. Namely, an NBC primetime show that is making an explicit comment on the Boy Scouts of America membership controversies.

We have articles for every single episode of Star Trek-- why not have an article on this particularly notable episode of The New Normal? Both conservative news and mainstream news seem to agree it's a 'pivotal moment' in that controversy. (Not unlike the Star Trek episode Plato's Stepchildren, when Lt Uhura kissed Captain Kirk in the first interracial kiss ever broadcast.) The thing of it is that your article, as written, didn't actually document any evidence of the episode actually having any impact on the course of the debate — all you actually documented was Justin Bartha's own personal opinion on the impact he hoped it would have, with no evidence that the episode actually had that much impact. And, in fact, pretty much every episode of The New Normal touches in some way on some kind of real-world issue about same-sex marriage and/or LGBT rights, so the mere fact that an episode examines a real-world issue doesn't confer notability in and of itself.

Star Trek has a loyal and obsessive cult which has written and analyzed virtually every episode of the series extensively enough that each episode does attain independent notability on its own merits — they don't get individual articles just because they exist, but because extensive and detailed sourcing is available about each episode as an independent entity. Most series, however, don't meet that standard, and thus are entitled only to a single episode list, with sometimes one or two articles about one or two individual episodes under special circumstances (e.g. Ellen and "The Puppy Episode") where the concrete real-world impact can actually be demonstrated in a substantial way and the article thus functions as far more than just a basic description of the fact that the episode exists.

Long story short, if you could write a long article about the episode that could cite far more than one or two interviews with Bartha, which demonstrated that the episode actually resulted in a substantive and meaningful shift in the discussion, then it might well qualify for a separate article — but in terms of what you did write, the article didn't actually contain anything you couldn't just add directly to the main article on the series as a whole. SOCK/POV activity on Adrian Dix

Not surprising that "they" would try to reinsert it again - note that not only is one of the cites the actual Sun article about this incidence, but another inserted at the start of the passage is a very clearly op-ed piece from a North Shore newspaper (the North Shore is an anti-NDP bastion, so is that newspaper). The SPA's name is User:ConcernedVancouverite and that account was only created on April 9, though test edits were made all over the backyard before honing back in on returning to "work on" the Adrian Dix article-cum-attack ad....this is "their" way around the IP block placed on their SPA accounts....on the 9th. The similarity betwen the names of Downtownvanman and ConcernedVancouverite im maybe only incidental; that this is from the same group of people is doubtless as is the reality that ConcernedVancouverite is a POV meatpuppet. I clearly can't act there, because of all that's gone down.........and I don't even feel like commenting on the talkpage; it's clear enough to you, I know, what's going on. As for the real dirt, I posted on Talk:Glen Clark last night pieces by Terry Glavin and Alex G. Tsakumis (who I despise but who does deserve an article) links providing the other facts about the casino stuff (which Mr Lee's paper did not report on reliably, and that same newspaper has corporate and editorial links to BCTV, who are party to the story.Skookum1 (talk) 02:01, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

The revert was correct, of course. But yes, it was an innocuous edit. It'll stop being innocuous if they try to reinsert even after being alerted to discussion about it. Also, you can repeat it a million times if you want, but the Vancouver Sun is a reliable source. The story on your editing history is most certainly irrelevant to the Dix article, but the source overall will always pass muster according to Wikipedia's policies. I'm sure WP:RS has the same WP:OWN issues that WP:MOS does and some of it probably penned/influenced by the MSM........which is why independent media and credible blogs get tossed out as NRS so readily....the Sun's corporate and donation ties to the BC Liberals and federal Tories are well-known and citable, and POV content is their forte.....as in the case of this article; WP:RS probably also allows Fox News and SunMedia huh?Skookum1 (talk) 05:25, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

You will find that many (although not all) editors are quite reluctant to cite things to Sun Media/Quebecor or Fox News, for the same reasons you (and I) are; however, they're not automatically disqualified on principle just for being them. Just as with any other source, we obviously need to watch out for the distinction between factual news and POV editorializing, but their news coverage is allowable as sourcing unless they can be proven, via the use of other sources, to have gotten a particular story wrong. Frankly, you'd be extremely hard-pressed to find a major commercial media company that doesn't have fairly strong ties to a particular political party — so that criterion would actually disqualify most media outlets in this country and leave us with exceedingly few viable sources at all. Obviously it's important to use and cite and read a variety of sources, and to maintain some critical skills to determine when a source isn't actually giving us the correct story — WP:RS specifically clarifies, for example, that sources are evaluated on a case-by-case basis — but WP:NPOV does mean we can't automatically deem the Vancouver Sun, Fox News or the Quebecor stable to be always invalid or unreliable sources. Note also the WP:RS criterion that In general, the more people engaged in checking facts, analyzing legal issues, and scrutinizing the writing, the more reliable the publication — that's why personal blogs are generally deemed unreliable.

That said, I'd really rather you guys not use my talk page as a venue for an extended debate that doesn't really have much of anything to do with me — there are all kinds of other venues (the article talk page, WP:CANTALK, issue noticeboards, etc.) for it and I'd kindly request that y'all find a more appropriate one. replacing the Glavin and Tsakumis cites with a National Post one??

Highly questionable; how is an op-ed cite from a reputable reporter who works as an independent different from an ope-ed in a chain paper? Tsakumis is a bit dicier, but he does have facts, credible and reputable ones, that are valid, particularly that interview. Replacing independent media with POV ones, no less from a paper that participated in the witch-hunt, is highly questionable to me. Glavin is a reputable source, that was in the Georgia Straight, which is a reliable source (which postMedia (unless it was still CanWest when it happened) used its influence with the provincial government to try and shut down through changes in the tax laws, one of the blacker marks on the Liberal record). The Post's glossing over of WHAT this is about (and it's more than "ideological" reasons, it's close party and personal ties between that ex-Mountie, the Premier, and the media......"neutral coverage" doesn't mean Wikipedia should participate in a coverup.02:14, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Lots of small categories and violated New Brunswick articles

Hi Bearcat, I need your help on those New Brunswick categories, A user by the name of User:Hogie75 has made lots of new categories of New Brunswick. These New Brunswick categories are very small and the categories are only one article. Could you talk to User:Hogie75 on possibly creating new categories that are small categories, and on Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations on creating List of people from Edmunston, New Brunswick, he misspelled "Edmundston", and copied from another New Brunswick category that was copied and violated, List of people from Bathurst, New Brunswick. Could you also go to Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations#2013-04-18 (Suspected copyright violations) and talk to User:Hogie75 copyright violating between articles and categories. Also, the categories User:Hogie75 has challenged a contested deletion on all of the small New Brunswick categories for categories that are too small. User:Hogie75 has made the message here. I reverted this this morning as you can see; the context is that it's a statement from a Liberal cabinet minister about the flight of Liberals disaffected with the current government/party to the Conservatives and is an embarrassment etc to the element that wanted this "out" of that article. For accuracy, Skookum, Macutty has never been "banned" (blocked) under that account for any reason. I saw your comments on the Dix article, and while he was subject to a SPI, it was left with no action. He was called out for failing to log in at times, but that entire report was more an attempt at chilling an opponent than anything else. The second accusation involving Rrius and Meisianiacal was simply absurd. That being said, this is getting ridiculous. Even though you've responded to it, I am simply going to remove that section outright. That comment certainly is little more than harrassment, especially given you've made no substantive edit to the Clark article in months. I think in the future, don't respond to those posts. [undent] I just made a revision to the Clark article which took out a POV-flavoured claim that the documents in Marissen's possession were "resumes from people looking for work in the federal government", which is NOT what the cite said, though such resumes are mentioned; what Marissen had in his possession (co-possession with Christy) were bid details on BC Rail...he also had resumes from Basi and Virk (interesting how the POV insertion never said that) but those weren't what the RCMP were there to pick up, it was the bid documents. They should have been interested in influence-peddling evidence but weren't; by then the investigation had been narrowed by Justice Dohm to address only charges against Basi and Virk, S-G Coleman also suspended a warrant for the Clark-Marissen home and told the MOunties to give them a phone call to let them know they were coming. There's so much more known out there that's skirted around in the "reliable sources" with this case it's nauseating how far-reaching the scandal goes......anyways point of this is that "soft" subversion edits like this mis-quotation should be watched out for.Skookum1 (talk) 05:09, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

POV deletions by SPA....political but of a different kind

Today, on a good dozen articles, I've reversed edits by User:Sinkalip (means "coyote") who's been going through articles removing references to the Okanagan, Shuswap and Ktunaxa peoples and "Sinixt-izing" them.... see this example. Disputes over FN territories are nothing new, User:OldManRivers commented to me on FB today, about this, he remembers Musqueam activists trying to obliterate content and citations on everything from the Stanley Park article through to the main Squamish people article. This one's far out of control, there's no welcome template on his/her talkpage, but this user only does Sinixt-POV edits......there's an active user in the Kootenays, I've seen your communications with her, I've asked her to keep a watch out for this stuff, and she may be better at diplomatic approaches to this user over their activites (User:Kootenayvolcano, who's in Nelson). I haven't looked at Sinkalip's UserContributions yet....but I know what I'll find. In the Nakusp, British Columbia article today there was another deletion of the Ktunaxa name for the place and any mention of the Secwepemc or others; in that case the cite for the Ktunaxa name was "used" as the cite for the Sinixt name, which just ain't right; that's all been repaired now, but I'm getting tired of having to fix this ten times a day (or more). Sorry to keep on running to you, you're just one CAnadian admin I know won't bite my head off (for nothing, I mean LOL). For such a little and obscure people, who don't even have official status in Canada anymore, they sure can be a troublesome bunch; more on that privately sometime re previous encounters with their propaganda arm on The Tyee.Skookum1 (talk) 17:21, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

While I was writing that, just after repairing the Okanagan article, Sinkalip did similar on the Columbia River article, see here. While that does give the Sinixt name (very obscure, and given that the Methow, Sanpoil, Kettle, Columbia, Cayuse, Shoshone, Colville and Okanagan names aren't given.....well......) the deletion of the facts of the material that was deleted/obliterated; it's like the Sinixt want to rewrite regional history/geography in their own image, I've seen this before and not just in Wikipedia (but it's been here too, not so much lately). My edit comment in the "here" link says it all, Sinixt-POV deletions....over 20 today.......don't want to WP:BITE but I"m starting to think this user needs a reprimand.....or even an out-of-the-blue block.....if more BC wikipedians were active, or more BC articles were on other WP:Canada editors' watchlists, I wouldn't be the only one making these repairs; the Nakusp one was time-consuming, for example.Skookum1 (talk) 17:36, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Adding date of death to summary page

Hi Bearcat;

Now that the user name nonsense has been resolved, I'd like to get back to adding to the collective knowledge about past Members of Provincial Parliament. I appreciate your comment about the "Notes" section, but I know, from speaking to poli-sci students and professors, that one of the most asked questions is whether particular politicians are still alive.

Would it offend anyone if I were to add an additional column, beside the "Notes" column, dedicated to the MPP "Status" and, within that column, list the date of death, if applicable. It would thereby, at a glance, indicate which MPP's are still alive and, therefore, available for any research? Having determined that there are only 7 surviving MPP's elected in 1963, or earlier, and only 12 from 1967, it is clear that there is a dwindling resource available to those wishing to study the political scene in Ontario a half-century ago and putting the information on one page would save someone having to click through up to 130 times, per Legislative Assembly.

Your comments would be most appreciated.

CfRs on Nuxalk, Sto:lo and St'at'imc categories getting bogged down by particularists

See the CfD pages for May 4 (today) and May 3. Between the Squamish one, the Nuxalk one, and the "Cree nations" one I'm starting pull my hair out from people who don't know the subject matter throwing guidelines around as if they were Gospel and not changeable or subject to interpretation; this all resulting from Kwami's unilateral change of ethno articles to "X people" from "native ethnonym" recently.....Also note please re Talk:Nuxalk people the copied over material that created that page may or may not be copyvio of the Nuxalk Nation's own copyrighted page; but I think the Wikipedia material is older than that page; that page needs lots of work anyway, I created it because of BrownHairedGirl's insistence that Category:Nuxalk Nation was the way to go because that was, ostensibly/supposedly, the main article for that cat; no it wasn't, same as Squamish wasn't the main article for Category:Squamish. I've spent all day at this....beginning to regret my return to Wikipedia as too much of my time here isn't spent writing or improving articles, but having to deal with the consequences of people throwing guidelines around, then wanting to enforce them as rules....Skookum1 (talk) 14:20, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

I don't know if you know that reference, it's the title of a piece by Richard Strauss invoking a German fairytale character who likes to make trouble....gotta be some connection to why that name is a username here.........getting bored and frustrated with what seemed like simple CfDs, most are doing fine and are logical; but in this case I'm tempted to start an ANI myself....getting accused of personal attacks by someone making them and then the "do it again and I'm gonna take measures" then says he wasn't meaning an ANI....what then? Bikers? we've been through the swamp of the "First Nations reserves" and various First Nations categories before....ad the lower-case guideline to that and Category:Cree nations is now being insisted upon as the 'most common use" for band governments, which are what is in that category....and Category:Cree First Nations can't work, because one Cree government is in Montana......anyways the details of the CfD are there, hidden amid the evasions-by-way-of-personal-attack/denunciation towards me...he goes on the attack whenever my points refute his into the ground.....this is partly a {{Anishinaabe}} category, I haven't fielded it there, maybe I should have taken it there where there should be editors sensitive both to aboriginally/indigenously-related word uses/meanings and also familiar with the nuances of Canadian English.......BrownHairedGirl pointed out the irrelevance of British or US English on CAnadian articles/categories, can't remember which of the CfDs that's on, maybe the St'at'imc or Nuxalk ones......anyways despite lots of constructive work since returning, I'm now finding myself being threatened with obstruction by someone being obstructionist, and it's boring....but I feel the one who sholud be making an ANI...instead of "going to court" I'm trying to find informed editors to come have a look; ther'es four days in the CfD left to go, I think.....the only votes that count is that of who closes it...that doesn't always mean the evidence will be properly examined, or understood, of course.....as one now-gone editor commented about why he won't come back, "I'm tired of all the drama"...an of the people who seem to infest the [[WP:]] areas with argument while often not doing much of anything else....Skookum1 (talk) 16:48, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

I've just been looking at Category:LGBT people from the United States - as I was trying to de-ghettoize someone who was African-American/LGBT - so as such, shouldn't such a person technically also be bubbled up to Category:LGBT people from the United States, and not just in their ethnic grouping? If not, the result would be the top level cat is white gay people, no? I suppose, also, people could be placed into a "by-occupation" cat, but not all occupations fit, as you know - so the cat overall is not fully diffusing, and thus according to a strict interpretation of the rules, the ethnic subcats shouldn't exist at all? Thoughts welcome....

Partly because I'm the first of "us" awake each day (being in Thailand as I am), I see the b.s. before anyone else can......a previous attempt to delete neoliberalism from the infobox and text was reverted, with cite provided, as was for conservatism; this edit not only tried to get rid of Conservatism and substitute "liberalism" uncited (very funny for a party whose members use the American derisory sense of "liberal"), and also changed "centre-right" to "centre". Taht's their claim, for sure, but proving they're following "Liberalism" is not gonna be easy....they're anything but. Been monitoring this and NDP pages for subtle and not-so-subtle changes, there'll be more of these as election day approaches I'm sure. I don't think the person who did that change even knows what "neoliberalism" is or they'd have taken it out. Kincardine, ON

Hello "Bearcat".

As for Kincardine, I am a citizen of the TOWN. No one references the municipality. Other than the government side of it. No one has ever or will ever say they live in the Municipality of Kincardine but rather in Kincardine, ON or Tiverton, ON. Not the municipality. Both pages should be able to up. One for the Municipality as a whole and one for the town of Kincardine as they are different things. This should be no different then Toronto, ON vs. York Region. Toronto is in York Region but it gets it's own page. It should be the same with Kincardine. Just because the have the same name is a stupid reason for one to be deleted. Kincardine is the town. The "Municipality of Kincardine" is a different thing and should be a different page.

And was putting a protection on the page really needed? Seriously?

There are still things wrong with the current page. There are multiple things that are for the town of Kincardine and not the Municipality. They need to be removed.

Thank you for your work to fix tagging and categorisation of articles. I note that in this edit, for example, you changed {{EngvarB}} to {{Use British English}}. Please note that until very recently, {{EngvarB}} redirected to {{Use British English}}. But after a number of complaints I received from Australian and South African users who objected to the former tag being placed on articles about Aus and SA subjects, that direct association has been terminated. I noticed you removed the Google book links fromList of books about Prime Ministers of Canada - Theses links are allow and should not be removed as per WP:BOOKLINKS. You will notice our main articles like at Canada#Further reading that leads to Bibliography of Canada and then to Bibliography of Canadian military history and then [[Bibliography of Canadian history ]] and so all have theses links. We have been doing this for years and has lead to countless improvements to the encyclopedia and is used by our students at the Wikipedia Education Programs. You sure your doing the right thing by removing links to a non commercial site supported by the academic community that contains links to books published by that community - the very type of sources we wish to promote? This is a game changer for me. The ISBN system is a complicated runaround system. Do you believe these links should be deleted in article like History of Canada or just in "Further reading" sections or just in list like bibs? I got a real problem when the work of our most educated editors is being removed. Not sure what to do here - we have to find a solution because I am not sure I can allow this to happen simply your interpretation of what the site is and what is best for the encyclopedia. I see what your saying about the value of some linked books...however the problem is the citation in many cases is made by one of our many tools like the Google book tool that coverts bare url into {{cite book}} format with the link. Asking those editors that contribute to bibs to not use the tool or manual delete the url is alot. A link like Thomas A. Rumney. Canadian geography: a scholarly bibliography. Scarecrow Press. {{cite book}}: Text "year2010" ignored (help) is hugely more helpful to students or anyone doing research be it to improve Wikipedia or not then to search ISBN 978-0-8108-6717-8 .Moxy (talk) 06:17, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

We will have to ask for outside help here. We see this in a very different light - I see this as an accessibility concern. If we have a link to a copy we should provided it for our readers and/or students - the ISBN link takes them to a page with many many links that may or may not then link them to a copy. Not only the fact many people have no clue what the ISBN system is to begin with. Best we keep it simple and help or readers and editors were we can. What harm are the links causing? Do you see no benefit at all to having direct links to copies of academic books? As I said before I see this as a fundamental principle of why we are here - that is to facilitate the spread of knowledge to the world in the easiest format possible. We should never tell editors one format is better then an other when 2 options are available - even better would be 3 ways to access the information. Where should we move this conversation to - as we compile these bibliographies for our readers and students - many books are digitizes for just this reason. We will simply have to disagree and move this outside our talks pages- I will always be more concerned about accessibility for our readers and editors over format any day (Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lists of works#Online books). I see anything that makes things easier for our readers to get access to a copies of real books be they in whole or in part is better then nothing. I simply don't see the removal of direct links to copies /or partial copies of academic books at a non commercial site as a positive edit. Seriously, if you see plant articles about a genus, they should be categorized as "Family genera" and then either at the genus or at the family, depending on how many species are in the genus. Hey Bearcat

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Noticed your removal of Rob Kirkham material from the Squamish article, thought it a propos to bring your attention to Sharon Gaetz which I saw getting added and went "hm" but it's one of a series of UNDUE articles by User:Neelix which are all of the same tone; "collections of meaningless information about non-notable people". There's nothing remarkable or noteworthy about Sharon Gaetz that I know of, the "she is", "she was" and "she was also" content hammers that home; Cindy Kovalak is another of his articles, up for AfD like his Heritage Grill and church articles; all of them "nested" and interconnected, apparently of the same religious/evangelical grouping, some are actually notable like Tara Teng but one look at that article, which is the longest of the lot, I think you see the problem, plus also on those linked to hers. see my replies to you on my talkpage, and also note the AfD on 118th Avenue massage parlour, another overwritten, UNDUE piece of hype from him....you don't see a pattern, I do. A complete lack of a sense of proportion is part of it, as is his insistence that things are notable simply because mainstream media report on trivial matters ad nasueam.......the pattern is clearly in all his recent creations, as is the inclusion of completely trivial facts about the subjects as if they were important and encyclopedic. There's a lot of garbage in Wikipedia, more and more of it, as people write on fan-type material or promotional items (as he did with his churches and restaurants connected to the non-notable people he's trying to make notable by making articles about them). I continue to be aghast that someone can become an admin without any sense of proportion or actual valuable knowledge, and who pushes non-encyclopedic material for inclusion because he says it's valuable. The massage parlour article is a case in point for how far off the rails he is as a contributor; this is the fourth of fifth AfD for one of his creations in the last few months; I became aware of them because he'd pushed Heritage Grill and Five Stones Church onto the New Westminster city article, where they did not belong (out of so many notable churches in that city, none with articles, for some kid in Nova Scotia to assert notability because he, supposedly, found local newspaper articles about it and thought it was interesting....and hey, just happened to involve Tara Teng and his evangelical movement......how was it he even knew about the Burnaby Now newspaper, and why was he reading it, if not for some COI connection and someone sending him the material? What the connection is to 118th Avenue massage parlour is I don't know, except that he's always including information on the fight against the sex worker trade.......so there's a whiff of WP:SOAP, a very strong one, around all his articles of late.Skookum1 (talk) 05:41, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Appreciate some of the updates but not sure why you felt the need to remove most of the external links to parks, protected areas, etc.; or perhaps it was merely an overly zealous application of this AWB thing. There's no specific rule about user talk pages; some people prefer to keep all the discussion in one place by having all replies posted on whichever page the first comment was posted to, while others prefer to go back and forth. (I'm in the latter camp; I just get really irritated with then having to come to the other person's talk page and post a "you have a reply" template — it's just an unnecessary extra step that results in my having to come post to your talk page anyway, and I've never seen the value in having to edit two talk pages just to post one reply.) The only real rule about user talk page discussions is to try as much as possible to not get into a fight about it if someone happens to have a different preference or habit about it than your own.

At any rate, look at item #13 ("Sites that are only indirectly related to the article's subject: the link should be directly related to the subject of the article. A general site that has information about a variety of subjects should usually not be linked from an article on a more specific subject.") and item #19 ("Websites of organizations mentioned in an article"). Neither Parks Canada nor the Ontario Provincial Parks system are directly related to Wolf Lake — the only purpose they serve on Wolf Lake's article is "other webpages where you might find some information about some other superficially similar things" (i.e. "a variety of subjects"). The only webpages that should be linked in the external links section on Wolf Lake are those where Wolf Lake itself is the actual subject of the page — with the exception that news articles about it in published media should be cited as references rather than being listed as external links. Hi Bearcat I am picking a few random names from editors who have helped me in the past, hoping that one or more might be around for a quick reply. I seem to have read somewhere that it is against policy to solicit others to join an action. At the same time I have often seen notifications of the type "because you have been involved with this article, we would like to let you know that ..." or something along those lines. Hey, Bearcat,

I just saw your note on another's User Talk Page about the recent reverts on Category:LGBT Actors. I think you can see by my post on WP:ERGS that I'm open to being instructed on the right way to assign categories but I didn't understand having 7 back-to-back reverts without explanation. Looking a Flyer22's contributions, he/she mostly does reverts of other users' edits so I shouldn't have taken in personally. I just have encountered such a persistent reverter and I was kind of at a loss as to what I was doing wrong.

I appreciate your comments in WP:ERGS and guidance. I don't want to misidentify anyone or place someone or some subject in an inappropriate category. But I can also see that there is an ongoing conversation on what is appropriate and so I will take extra care with topics that fall into the area of sexual orientation and sexual identity.
