The international logo for the Pokémon franchise

The third generation (Generation III) of the Pokémon franchise features 135 fictional species of creatures introduced to the core video game series in the 2002 Game Boy Advance games Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. These games were accompanied by the television series Pokémon Advanced, which aired from November 1, 2002, until August 28, 2003 in Japan.

The following list details the 135 Pokémon of Generation III in order of their National Pokédex number. The first Pokémon, Treecko, is number 252 and the last, Deoxys, is number 386. Alternate forms that result in type changes are included for convenience. Mega evolutions and regional forms are included on the pages for the generation in which they were introduced.

Design and development

Nintendo Life noted in a retrospective that the third generation of Pokémon has a very different "feel" from the two generations that came before it because almost all of its 135 new Pokémon – save for Azurill and Wynaut – have no relation to those of the previous generations. Ruby and Sapphire features two "Mythical Pokémon" – Jirachi and Deoxys – both of which became available to coincide with their respective anime movies.

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire significantly increased the amount of "Dark" and "Steel"-type Pokémon in the series, as only a few Pokémon in previous generations used these typings. Hardcore Gamer also noted that many of the new Pokémon made use of "dual typing", where Pokémon have both a primary and a secondary type; this was not nearly as common in Red and Blue or Gold and Silver.

Blaziken has received generally positive reception. IGN readers ranked Blaziken the 50th best Pokémon ever. Game Informer ranked it the 36th best Pokémon. In a poll by Official Nintendo Magazine's Tom East, Blaziken was voted the third-best Fire-type Pokémon. They stated, "A kung fu chicken? What's not to like?". In a poll of the best Pokémon from Ruby and Sapphire in celebration of the games having 10 years under their belt, Blaziken was ranked in third place. Another poll of the best Pokémon introduced in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald placed Blaziken third. GamesRadar used Blaziken as an example of a human-shaped Pokémon done right. The Escapist's John Funk wrote that Blaziken was an "awesome" example of a Pokémon that players who refused to play past Red and Blue were missing out on. Game Informer's Jeff Marchiafava felt that Blaziken was less cool than other Fire-type Pokémon and stated that it has a 1970s "vibe". While he felt that the Mega Evolution was an improvement, he called it a "Mega Disappointment." Kotaku's Eric Jou also felt that it had a weak design and cited it as an example of Ruby and Sapphire's weak Pokémon designs. Several critics and websites have noted that Blaziken would be a good choice for a playable character in Super Smash Bros.. It was the first Pokémon capable of knowing Blaze Kick. It received an Ability called Speed Boost in Generation 5, which caused it to be banned to the 'Ubers' tier in the Smogon Competitive Scene.

Mudkip is one of three starters from the Hoenn region.

In the remakes, Wally's Ralts instead evolves into a Gallade.

In the games, Shedinja is notable for its unique trait of having only 1 HP and for blocking all attacks except "super effective" ones with its ability Wonder Guard. Its English name is a portmanteau of "shed" (relating to shedding skin) and "ninja".

This glitch was fixed in Generation VI.

The Gym Leader Roxanne uses one as her ace Pokémon.

It is Mawile's counterpart, and it received a Mega Evolution in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Its "second mouth" on the back of its head is actually two steel horns fused together. It will lure foes or prey in with its docile looking face, then use its massive jaws to bite and eat them. It is Sableye's counterpart, and it gained a Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y.

Lightning falls in its vicinity so often that it is said to have been born from lightning bolts. Its design is inspired by the mythological Japanese creature Raijū, a being composed purely of lightning said to take on many quadrupedal forms. It gained a Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y.

Its former signature ability Plus powers up Pokémon with the ability Minus in a Double Battle. Together with Minun, it represents positive electrical charges.

The pattern on its cheeks resembles subtraction. Its former signature ability Minus powers up Pokémon with the ability Plus in a Double Battle. They are male exclusive, and despite not sharing an evolutionary family with it, is related to Illumise. Its former signature move, Tail Glow, increases Volbeat's Sp. The thorns on its head have poison and each hand has a different poison. As an old tradition in a far away land, one would send one of its thorns to challenge them to a duel.

It is also Team Aqua Leader Archie's signature Pokémon.

In fact, it is so scratch-resistant that not even fire, cannon shots, or diamonds can hurt it. It is one of three Regis. In European releases of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Registeel had its Sprite altered to have both arms down. In the North American and Japanese version, Registeel had its right arm up, which could be mistaken for a Nazi salute.

It is a bit better though when it comes to power compared to his counterpart Latias. Both him and Latias had starring roles in Pokémon Heroes. Both Latias and Latios gained Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. which allowed the duo to be used in a new mechanic, soaring.

Jirachi	Jirāchi (ジラーチ)	0385	Steel	Psychic	No evolution		Legend says that Jirachi sleeps every 1,000 years, and if you write your wishes on the tags on its forehead, it might grant them. Jirachi has an eye on its stomach, and is the only Pokémon capable of learning Doom Desire. It was first made available via a bonus disc that came with Pokémon Colosseum, which also showed a preview of the movie it starred in: Pokémon: Jirachi—Wish Maker.
Deoxys	Deokishisu (デオキシス)	0386	Psychic		No evolution		Deoxys is capable of changing between four "Formes": Normal, Attack, Defence, and Speed. Each of which differs by base stat values, effort value yield, and appearance. Deoxys is an alien that was born when a crystal had been hit with UV rays. In March 2005, NASA teamed up with the Pokémon Trading Card Game team to use Deoxys' likeness to educate children about outer space and the ozone layer. As part of this endeavor, NASA created browser games on its website and Nintendo of America distributed promotional bracelets and postcards. It could be captured after completing a post game story titled The Delta Episode in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, being the first Mythical Pokémon to be available outside of events. It also starred in its own movie alongside Rayquaza, Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys.

Reception

Reception to Generation III's Pokémon has been polarising. Alex Carlson of Hardcore Gamer wrote in 2014 that the third generation of Pokémon games was not well received by fans of the series, with some people calling the generation the "worst in the series history". This was in part because Ruby and Sapphire did not allow players to transfer in their Pokémon from previous generations and, because of this, many older Pokémon were completely unavailable in the games until Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were released a few years later. Meanwhile, many of the new Pokémon designs, such as those for Torchic, Feebas, Luvdisc, Castform and Clamperl, were criticised for being unoriginal. Contrastingly, some designs, including Breloom, Aggron, and the aforementioned Castform were praised for their coolness, with the large variety of unique legendary Pokémon also helping the third generation feel fresh and new. While Ruby and Sapphire were recognized for introducing less memorable designs than their predecessors, designs like Milotic, Salamence, Metagross, Rayquaza, and Blaziken made the overall generation a satisfying supplement to the existing Pokédex.

The third generation has had its share of enduringly popular designs. Eighteen years after the release of Ruby and Sapphire, Rayquaza and Gardevoir finished eighth and ninth in 2020's Pokémon of the Year vote, with Flygon, Sceptile, and Blaziken also among the top 30. Rayquaza also finished eighth in a 2016 Japanese poll, with Jirachi and Kyogre among the top 25. A popularity vote on the Pokémon subreddit featured Blaziken at 5th, joined in the top 25 by Gardevoir, Absol, Flygon, and Mudkip.
