John Alfred Tinniswood was born on 26 August 1912 in Liverpool, England. During World War II, he held administrative role within Royal Mail as an accountant and auditor, due to his poor eye-sight.[2] He was also involved in logistical tasks,such as locating stranded soldiers and organising food supplies.[2] He met his wife, Blodwen, in 1942, and their only daughter, Susan, was born the following year.[3] After the war, Tinniswood went on to work as an accountant for Shell and BP, before retiring in 1972.[2][4] His wife Blodwen died in 1986 after 44 years of marriage.[3]

In 1988, his wife died after 44 years of marriage. He moved to a care home in Southport, England were he currently resides [5]. He became the oldest British man upon the death of 108-year-old Harry Fransman on 25 September 2020, the oldest living man in Europe following the death of 111-year-old Andre Ludwig on 7 January 2024[6], and the oldest verified living man in the world following the death of Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela on 2 April 2024.[1]
