During World War II, he held administrative role within Royal Mail as an accountant and auditor, due to his poor eye-sight.[2] He was also involved in logistical tasks,such as locating stranded soldiers and organising food supplies.[2] He met his wife, Blodwen, in 1942, and their only daughter, Susan, was born the following year.[3] After the war, Tinniswood went on to work as an accountant for Shell and BP, before retiring in 1972.[2][4] His wife Blodwen died in 1986 after 44 years of marriage.[3]
