Unser Kind (Our Child) is a 2024 Swiss short film co-written and directed by Samuel Flückiger and produced by the Oscars©- nominated producers Nadine Lüchinger[1] and Flavio Gerber, Filmgerberei. The film is about a Swiss couple who travels to Georgia for a prenatal check-up with their unborn child's surrogate mother.[2]

Unser Kind (Our Child) is the winner of the Academy Award qualifying "Best of Fest"-Award at the 28th LA Shorts International Short Film Festival.[3]

Plot

[edit]

The Swiss couple Hanna (Lucy Wirth) and Michael (Jürg Plüss) are expecting a child through surrogacy in Tbilisi, Georgia. When visiting their surrogate Mariam (Gano Gerliani), questions about their baby's health arise, forcing them to make a difficult moral decision.[4]

Background

[edit]

The 22-minute short film deals with the topic of commercial surrogacy, highlighting the challenges faced by couples in Western countries where it is illegal or overly expensive, and the impact on the low-income women that help them realize their dreams of parenthood abroad.[5]

Furthermore, the film addresses social taboos surrounding the issue of unwanted childlessness in a multi-layered way. Infertility is a highly emotional topic and remains tabooed and stigmatized in many cultures.[6]

Samuel Flückiger's motivation for making this short film was to encourage a debate about the legalization of altruistic surrogacy and to highlight the necessity to protect low-income surrogates from exploitation.[7]
