"M???"

Why are the dreamcast and pc versions rated "M" and the ps1 version only "T"?

Some songs in the PC version used the F-word a lot, and these songs were edited in the PlayStation version. I can only assume this is the reason for the rating change, because I've owned and played both versions and don't remember any other changes to the content.

^Just while you mention that; I believe there wasnt enough information about the differences between PC and playstation versions. Although I cant exactly remember in great detail, i know some of the missions were changed, and some locations and minigames arent there in the playstation version. One of the russian mob missions requires you to steal a krishna bus, where in the pc version you would steal a civilian style bus. To my knowledge this is because there is no public transport function in the Playstation version. Also in the pc version (i could be wrong here, it has been a while) there was a renegade faction to the north west of the industrial sector armed with machine guns and pistols, and resembled rednecks, but engaged the player no matter what that players standing with factions is. However, I think this area was impossible to get to in the playstation version. Ohh and in case it wasnt already mentioned; no playstation gta had trains in them, unlike pc versions and possibly others. And the minigame that is missing from the console version is in the residential sector, and requires the player to locate and enter a particular 'numbered' sports car, which would warp the player to "wang cars" (which would later feature in GTA san andreas btw)(? not sure) and would have to find all the sports cars to earn a reward, which was something like a few vehicles with guns and oil slick dispensers and stuff on them. Ohh and as a side note, somebody may want to talk about the fact that this game allows you to rig cars with modifications like guns and mines etc. On the PC version, up on entering the second sector in the PC version, you witness three gang members, one from each respective gang shoot at each other, which is a somewhat setup or scripted event, but doesnt occur on the playstation version.

My last point is something I personally suspected (and is unrelated to versions and platforms from what i can tell), but most definitely unconfirmed is I think that by looking at the first two stages artistic styles and locales/points of interest etc. - The titles of these districts may have been confused during development, as the second district is referred to as residential, but consists of two jails, or one jail and a fortress style police station, lots of neon-esque (cant think of a better word but basically i remember there being a lot of neon objects on the sides of buildings in the second sector), sleazy areas with liquor stores and, i could be wrong, a brothel. There is even a shopping mall, and what seems to be an abandoned motorway bridge that links the zaibatsu to the central area of the map, plus quite a few standard bridges and double lane motorways going around the outskirts of the central areas but without going through directly into gang areas, and to me, all these things put together seem a little too busy for a residential area, in fact it is the most urbanized sector of the three. When you look at the downtown area, it consists of a lot of buildings without much difference between each one, and a police department (but much smaller than the one one the second sector. Even gang areas are only distinguishable by gangs themselves patrolling it, the colours of rooftops and paved areas. The looneys are in an asylum, which can be or frequently are in rural areas at least I think they are. That is what I thought anyway, or am I the only person who got that impression of the sectors? - Lee

Radio station tracks

I've taken the liberty to comment out the tracks for the time being. It's difficult to associate some of them to specific radio stations because they also appear in two or more of them in game. I would probably dedicate a subsection to the tracks instead, although I still don't see how they will be relevant to the article in general. Hmm, as someone who really enjoyed GTA2 and the music on the radio stations, I found it quite hard to find specific info on any of the songs played on the radio station. While the manual does mention which artists sing which songs, it doesn't tell which song is which soyou are left in the dark. I've identified most of the songs on the radio stations and I thought it would be useful for those poeple interested in ripping the tracks of the .wav file on the GTA2 CD. Any suggestions on how this info can be integrated into the article? I really think wikipedia should have this info, afterall, we do have a GTA3 sountrakc article. MvD 11:04, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

If you are interested in ripping the tracks, you won't be able to do it on your PS GTA2 CD. However, if you download the game, you can access the radio stations and they've seperated each radio station by number. Before deleting the game, I took station "11" and "13" - KRZ and KGBH. So, if you can download it -- this would be the easiest way to do it! (Unless you have the PC version of course)

Zaibatsu

Does anyone else agree that the gang "Zaibatsu" featured in the game are an homage to the Usual Suspects?

  • Zaibatsu is the name of the corporation. The fact that they are not Japanese mirrors the fact that Keyser Soze's lawyer in the movie was named Kobayashi even though he also was not Japanese.
  • Zaibatsu are a underground narcotics organisation, as was Soze's business.
  • The various Zaibatsu contacts in the game look (i.e. Trey Walsh) also look a lot like Kobayashi (Pete Postlethwaite).

The subject of Robert De Negro

The "character" Robert De Negro referenced in the radio script of GTA2 is actually the rap artist who wrote the theme for the original GTA. The song also made an appearance on GTAIII's Lips 106 radio station. Whether or not the name is a reference to Robert De Niro, (which it obviously is) was the creative decision of the rap artist, not Rockstar Games or DMA.

Claude Speed

In this sentence:
"The depiction of Claude Speed is different from his appearance in later (but chronologically earlier) Grand Theft Auto titles, as he displays a wide array of emotions and appears to be quite verbal in GTA2 but is completely mute and expressionless in GTA III and GTA: San Andreas."
Claude Speed does not participate in GTA: San Andreas, right?

What is known is that some gamers believe that both Claude Speed and Claude are the same person, due to both characters sharing the same first name, yet both the GTA2-rendition and GTA III-rendition (including Claude in SA) are not completely proven to be the same person, as the latter's last name was never mentioned. So long as there exists the assumption that both characters are the same, this passage seems harmless enough for mention, but will require emphasis of any loose connections. ╫ 25 ◀RingADing▶ 16:48, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Mad Island

When I played the game I noticed somewhere a island in which the residents would attack you, named "Mad Island". Some of the crazies looked like the Redneck gang, do you think we should mention mad island?

No, Mad Island is a district in the extreme northwest of the Industrial Sector (3rd area), reached by the westernmost 6-lane highway. And the residents do indeed shoot at you, regardless of your current respect levels with the gangs. About the WTC thing

Just thought I'd point out that the video in question was shot before the September 11th attacks. For all the video's creators knew, the Twin Towers would still be around in 2013, the year in which the game supposedly takes place. CyberRaptor 18:17, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

PlayStation-specific features.

Ability to change radio station in PS1 version

In the radio part it says of the F1 function in the PC version like only the PC version allows you to change stations, but you can do this on the Ps1 version. I forget the button but I think it's up. One of the directional buttons anyway. I'd edit it but I don't remember the exact button, so could someone else who knows do it? what is the name of the song being played while reading the credits in the end of the game? I remember hearing police sirens and something like "na na na na na".

One sugestion

In my opinion GTA2 not operates in Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, I know, because I had GTA2 in my computer. GTA2 operates in operating system 2000 and XP, but you are must DOS Emulator. Sharon boyfriend talk to me? 11:32, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

I've got GTA2 (the version available on the Rockstar Web site) running perfectly right now on 64-bit XP, so I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work on the 32-bit version... Must be run from an administrator account, though. 83.24.114.155 (talk) 20:39, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Neutral?

In parts the article does appear to stray into non-neutral territory; quotes such as "other neat features include" - as much as they are neat, I don't think it's for us to put into an article. What do you think? I've tagged it as per WP:NPOV. Kavanagh21 (talk) 12:05, 4 August 2008 (UTC)


I agree, it needs a rewrite. It also seems a little too descriptive and sometimes strays away from the topic at hand (which is GTA TWO, not the other games in the series).

For example:

GTA2 also included a saving technique that improved upon that of the original GTA, which saved only when finishing a city. If the player entered a church with $50,000, a voice announced "Hallelujah! Another soul saved!". This notified the player that the game had been saved. If the player did not have enough money, the voice would say "Damnation! No donation, no salvation!" The "safe house" feature would become standard and expanded upon in later GTA games, although saving would become free of financial cost.

Do we really need all of this detail? Is it necessary to have what the voice would say when you saved or if you tried to and had no money? If anything, all you really need is the first sentence. Maybe you can also throw in that it costs money to save. That's all you really need.

At least some radio loopers could've been recorded from real radio. And the game was RELEASED in 1999. That's why the radio host says that. Year being 2013 is probably the time in the game. Again, Johnny's phrase points at release date rather than at setting's time. Also note that you hear WEBSITE ADS in some GTA3 radio stations despite the setting.

Open World?

The category has been added and removed a few times for lack of sourcing. Sourcing could be difficult as the categorisation of open world games was much more limited pre 2006. I have no good sources but below are the sources, reliable or otherwise that categorise the game as OW;
