Sasaram (sometimes also spelled as Sahsaram) is the administrative headquarters of Rohtas district in the Indian state of Bihar.

History

It is an ancient city and is believed to derive its name from Sahastrabahu, an ancient king and Parsuram, the warrior sage.

Sasaram is also famous for being the birthplace of Pashtun Emperor Sher Shah Suri who ruled at Delhi for five years, his famous red sandstone mausoleum(122ft high)stands magnificently in the middle of an artificial lake,which is known as second taj mahal of india. And there is another tomb at Sherganj known by Sukha Rauza (It is in the middle of green field. It also has a Baulia (Small pond used by queens of the emperor for baths. The NH2 (Grand Trunk Road) cross from city.

Sasaram is also famous for Maa Tara Chandi Temple and also for Kaimur mountain. Sasaram is also famous for Stone Chips and Stone mining industries.

Geography

Sasaram is located at 24°57′N 84°02′E / 24.95°N 84.03°E / 24.95; 84.03[1]. It has an average elevation of 101 metres (331 feet).

Sasaram Railway station is located on the Grand Chord line of the Indian Railways, connecting Calcutta and Delhi. The famed Grand Trunk Road passes through Sasaram town. The nearby cities are Dehri-on-sone, Bhabua, Varanasi and Gaya. Dehri is about 18 kilometers from Sasaram.It is located on the bank of river SONE and the longest railway bridge of India is located here.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Sasaram had a population of 131,042. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Sasaram has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 58%. In Sasaram, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

It also has a fertile agricultural hinterland.
