In Data Warehousing, an Operational System is the Software System which uses a Database for doing daily operations of an organization. The Operational System usually uses an OLTP Database which is optimized for faster transaction processing that is Inserting, Deleting and Updating data. On the other side, Data Warehouses use OLTP Databases which are optimized for faster queries.
Synonyms
Sometimes it's just referred to as Operational Database although an Operational Database is just a part of an Operational System which includes other parts like Software for Business Logic and User Interface.
