Manchurian Terms and Questions

  • I'm afraid I didn't pay too much attention to the watch list during this period on this one! On June 9th you left me a questionj on Talk:Manchuria regarding this sentence:

In contrast to Outer Manchuria, the part of Manchuria that is still part of China, usually called simply "Manchuria", can also be referred to as "Inner Manchuria".

  • I'd suggest altering 'Outer' TO 'Russian', but the key problem is reconciling "Inner Manchuria" with Inner Manchuria, as there seems to be a huge difference. This seems to be a general problem with historic terms verus their modern 'Political descendents' in China in particular.
  • e.g. One editor took Lushun and moved it 40 miles into downtown Dalian, by misconstruing the political 'Lushunkou district' and equating it with the place 'Lushun'. I'm not versed enough in the region to detect many such a faux pas, which is why I phrased the message to someone more expert.
  • Do you know if there is a way to check the use of a term within Wiki--I've used 'Inner Manchuria'=='Chinese Manchuria' in several articles, and searching out such uses manually could get troublesome. I saw the 'IM' article last night for the first time. User:Fabartus || Talkto_FrankB 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)

Ran,

I noticed that you moved Erdini Qoigyijabu to Erdini Qoigyijabu, 11th Panchen Lama. I actually was going to make both of the articles not include the "11th Panchen Lama" title and the end, but I couldn't move "Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, 11th Panchen Lama" to just "Gedhun Choekyi Nyima" because they said I had you put it on Wikipedia:Requested moves. Since you are an admin, could you just move both articles to just Erdini Qoigyijabu & Gedhun Choekyi Nyima without the title at the end? Thanks. --Hottentot

Ok, that's fine then. Btw, what Chinese province are you from? --Hottentot

Physicians for Human Rights

They're not happy with elements of PRC governance. Nowhere do they endorse Tibetan independence.

Lapsed Pacifist 03:29, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I reject the accusation of pushing POV. It's unbecoming to bandy insults about. The sections were not labelled "praise" and "criticism". It's misleading in the extreme to assert that human rights organisations seek Tibetan independence or further autonomy when they patently do no such thing.

So the map I modified is not useful and I didn't modify it as you suggested. I wonder if I asked for its deletion: sorry make you think about the quaestion for nothing and that is all my fault. sarcelle's laogai articles

Hello ran, nothing is currently being done at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chinese cities, I was wondering if we should revive the discussion and/or proceed with the general consensus, which is to delete all those articles or turning them into stubs. But I'm not an admin and can't do anything, so I think you should take the initiative. :D Thanks. -Hmib 23:54, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cinemas of Hong Kong, Taiwan, (mainland) China

Hello Ran. I'd like to draw your attention to recent attempts by User:Huaiwei to categorised category:cinema of Hong Kong and cinema of Taiwan under category:cinema of China, and her/his assertion that cinemas of Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of cinema of China in his edit to list of film-related topics. Both contradict with what is described about the three branches by the leading paragraph of cinema of Hong Kong, cinema of Taiwan and cinema of China, and the intention of the split, as recorded at talk:cinema of China. I have started the discussion at talk:cinema of China#List of film-related topics. Thank you. — Instantnood 16:22, July 26, 2005 (UTC)

Use of pictures of Wikipedia on my personal homepage

Hi Ran!

I have a question about the use of the pictures on wikipedia for my personal homepage. I'm working on a homepage about China and I wonder if I can use pictures of Wikipedia on it. If I use them, I have to say that they are subject of the conditions of the Gnu-License,right? And I have to mention the last author, right? Please tell me what I need to do to use the pictures on my homepage correctly.

Thank you very much! Greetings Sebastian

High resolution China administrative map

Hi!

I'm user Colegota from Spanish Wikipedia and Commons.

Singlish

Hello Ran! Not too sure whether this is a good way to write to your personally but since I have no other way of contacting you, this seems the best way to do so.

First of all, I've read the Singapore Colloquial English section and I think it was really well-done! And with you doing all the cleaning up and editing, it must be really tough!

I am writing to you to ask for some info. I am currently a Singaporean student in Japan, writing my thesis for my basic degree which bears some relation to Singlish. As such, I will be really grateful if you could tell me where you got the information about Singlish bing a continuum of sociolects in the Overview section of the article.

I also notice that there is no bibliography in the Singapore Colloquial English entry, unlike some other entries. Wouldn't this be an infringement of copyrights?

Sorry for this brief and realtively unconstructive message. But I really hope you can help me with the source for the Singlish article. Thanks!

Hello! Newcomer here wants to know about Singlish...

This is Zoe again. I was the person who wrote you the previous message about Singlish. YOu can now reply to me at my user page.

Due to my ignorance, I created a page in Wikipedia called User:219.8.100.98. How can I delete the the page that is linked to my IP address now? I am aware that since I am new, I can't delete pages. Can you delete the page since you are an administrator?

Really sorry to bother you. Thanks for reading the message. zoek 10:44, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sarcelles is at it again, unfortunately

Hi there Ran, it seems our old friend Sarcelles is back to his old tricks once again, yes that's right he's back to posting up poorly editted stubs with the aim of promoting the plight of the Falun Gong. The articles in question are as follows: Changchun Public Security Bureau, Tangshan Public Security Bureau, Shijiazhuang Public Security Bureau, Lu'an Public Security Bureau . The last two articles have been put up by people for deletion. All of these articles follow the same old formula that Sarcelles used for his string of poorly written stubs on Chinese cities, that is: location, a couple of landmarks such "it is next to a police station", then his pleas for the Falun Gong". I have nothing against the Falun Gong but he's clearly using Wikipedia for vanity purposes, to promote the Falun Gong. Abstrakt 14:37, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ran - Reference your edit [2] to the 2008 Summer Olympics article, as per my reversion edit- please read talk page for sources as indicated in my previous edit summary and perhaps discuss any further changes you propose making there. Chinese and Mandarin

Hello Ran your help is now needed at talk:list of official languages by country (#Vernacular Chinese? and #Official Written Languages). Thanks in advance. — Instantnood 11:13, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Your help is desperately needed at talk:list of official languages by country. User:Huaiwei and I are having some trouble to communicate. While the subject matter of the discussion is to determine if Chinese (as a written language shared by several Chinese spoken languages) and Standard Mandarin (Putonghua for the PRC, Kuo-yü for the ROC) shall both be listed, he kept talking about scripts, from simplified and traditional, all the way to Roman letters, Kanji and Jawi. Please help us, and voice your opinion. Thanks. — Instantnood 19:23, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your comment at talk:Chinese written language [3]. Meanwhile user:Huaiwei has kept challenging [4] if the Chinese written language is a language, and if it's official. — Instantnood 01:04, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request

Hi :) I was wondering if you could do Wikimedia a big favour and translate the error message text to Chinese? I'm not sure how the Chinese Wikipedia works: do you use simplified or traditional chinese, or both? Whatever you can do would be appreciated. The translation page is on meta. Thanks again. - Mark 15:53, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. I need to know a couple of extra things about traditional and simplified Chinese. Can you translate "Traditional Chinese" and "Simplified Chinese" into their respective languages for me? Also, are the characters for "Chinese" the same in both Traditional and Simplified Chinese? - Mark 09:16, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for doing that underlining: you pre-empted my request! :) As for the European languages, I've got most of them done. The few that I don't have the links done for, I'll pester the people in their respective language's channel on IRC. That's where most of the translation has come from, Chinese just has a very inactive channel (second only to Portuguese). - Mark 16:26, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion on China

Hi Ran. Would you care to discuss your reversion of my edit on China? I'm not very sure about the meaning or accuracy of the phrase "while other observers tend to point out irregularities and exceptions to this traditional view". Maybe we can discuss here first and see how we can come to a negotiation. Mandel 19:47, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My reason being social sciences like history and politics (unlike math or science) can support multiple perspectives, although it's possible to explain why one view is a fairer assessment than another (which was what I was doing). It's not like science where 1 + 1 = 2 and never 3. If you say "China's rich culture and history is a progressive single continuum" you are basically negating the other POVs, upholding one perspective as a fact. There are of course reasons for me to say why holding this view is helpful in understanding Chinese culture and history, and since this statement came at the beginning, the answer should probably come somewhere in the succeeding paragraphs. Maybe someone else will explain it better than me. In effect, it's somewhat similar to your edit: "while other observers tend to point out irregularities and exceptions to this traditional view". What exactly are the irregularities and exceptions? They're not explained. Mandel 20:21, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I see you are coming to a compromise...however it is still problematic. The main problem is not your rewrite but the initial definition. If you define "China" as a "number of states and cultures that have existed in continental East Asia for the last 4000 years", hence taking it back to history for 4000 years, then why is it that in the next sentence only modern China is mentioned? Calling "modern China" "multiple civilizations" or "multiple states" here doesn't make sense. Your last sentence is problematic as well. "Profound changes to Chinese civilization" doesn't contradict continuity and unity in the first place, and "internal diversity within modern China" seems rather more political than cultural.
In short, it's all rather confusing. Mandel 20:55, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, because the argument is that modern China is also multiple states (PRC, ROC, even Mongolia) and multiple civilizations (China proper, Xinjiang, Tibet, (Inner) Mongolia, you can divvy up the Han Chinese too if you prefer...)
Isn't that covered in People's Republic of China? Mandel 10:57, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing you meant that it doesn't make much sense to keep this one. I've just noticed that two of the votes are technically a day too late, which would shift the balance to delete. I'm only a freshly-minted admin, so I'm trying to find someone to ask for advice on how to proceed here. IceKarma 05:23, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Ran, I noticed this page you made on the undistinguished nationalities of China, the 克木 are also known as the Khmu of Laos, http://www.ethnologue.com/14/show_language.asp?code=KJG

The Kucong are also known as the Yellow Lahu (Lahu Shu) of Laos. http://www.ethnologue.com/14/show_language.asp?code=KDS

Mang (芒人) http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=zng

There are two groups of Deng (僜人) http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=dat http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=gen

I'm not 100% sure but I do remember something about the Gejia (革家人) of Guizhou being lumped into the nationality of "Miao".

Not sure if you want to add this in as an example of how some ethnic groups of China are lumped into recognized nationalities but the Utsuls (Hainan Chams) are recognized as Hui and the 1,500 or so Tuvans in China are recognized as Mongols. Another thing what about the 500,000 people who speak the Lingao language in Hainan? They prefer to be recognized as Han Chinese but their language shows Tai-Kadai linguistic heritage.

Abstrakt 20:22, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to remember reading somewhere (but can't remember where, now) that the Lingao at one stage tried for nationality status but were not successful. Bathrobe 08:29, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
