Wikipedia talk: Decline of Articles for creation/Internews Europe

Dear Swister Twister,

Thank you for your reply and comment on [Articles for creation/Internews Europe]. I have already had a look at Wikipedia:Writing better articles and I have tried to include as many reliable references as possible, see for instance TV5Monde(2011), European Commission (2009) or http://atelier.rfi.fr/profiles/blogs/des-medias-pour-le.

I also tried to change some of the language to make it sound more like a wikipedia article i.e. instead of 'strives' used now the word 'tries' in the first introductory paragraph.

I really don't know what to do more. Internews Europe is an organization with a long history of experience in international media development which particularly tries to support freedom of expression, investigative journalism and the voices of local communities excluded from the mainstream media, actually an agenda similar to wikipedia! I think their message, like yours, is we are allowed to know. I therefore thought it would be worth writing an entry about this organization in particular.

I will try to continuously improve the article, but it would be helpful if you provide me with some more tips!

Hello SwisterTwister. I just did quite a few hours of work on my article cleaning up citations and references and I hope you can look it over again. I was able to remove all links to the www.wison.com website and replaced them with secondary source journal articles on the company. These really helped! I hope these secondary sources will help me with my submission. Let me know if there is anything else I can work on. Any suggestions? RossPKelley (talk) 05:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

COI Issue-mariasachs wiki page

Hi, I've read-through the tutorial page, thanks for the link. I haven't seen how best to deal with COI issues, and I believe I may need a more senior editor (since I'm still in the learning stages of wiki editing) for guidance. Question is below:

My question is about the wiki site- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Sachs. To be as transparent as possible, the site is of my mom; she first had a wiki page created (I believe it was automatically created) when she became a local councilor in south Florida (a state house representative) in 2006. When she became a state senator in 2010, I wanted to add more details and a photo to her wiki site. I don't posses much technological skill, so I asked for help on the talk page and an editor ( Jason Quinn, I think it was) helped post two photos. While I was typing to him, I identified myself as the daughter because I thought- given the emphasis on transparency in the Wiki community - it'd be important to note. Since that moment i identified myself, the wiki article has had the "This article is not written from a neutral point of view" banner.

I understand that on the COI page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest it states that " editors with COIs are strongly encouraged—but not actually required—to declare their interests, both on their user pages and on the talk page of the related article they are editing, particularly if those edits may be contested. Editors who disguise their COIs are often exposed, creating a perception that they, and perhaps their employer, are trying to distort Wikipedia. When someone voluntarily discloses a conflict of interest, other editors should always assume the editor is trying to do the right thing. Do not use a voluntarily disclosed conflict of interest as a weapon against the editor.

I thought that in identifying myself, it would be an ethical way to show my point of view. I would be happy to have that stated on the talk page, that the daughter has contributed to part of the article. However, the way it is now - as a banner on the top of the wiki page- makes it seem as if the entire article should be called into question. The current talk page for the wiki article has a posting from several editors who are discussing the COI but the only actionable item I can take is that one of them wants to bring in someone to edit it. I've been asking for help to bring on a senior editor to thus edit the page so we can rectify the problem but I haven't been able to do so (the various "help" requests on the talk page are by me). I hope that there is some way to resolve this issue. If it entails removing much of the current text on the page, then whatever is best to restore top credibility. I myself have not made any additional edits because I thought at this point it would be best to bring in a senior editor for further review. In 2010, I had originally contributed to the "Personal Life" section, parts of the 'Career' Section and I provided the references in 'Veterans and Nursing Homes".

Hello SwisterTwister. I am just letting you know that I have converted the speedy deletion tag that you placed on Centro Integral Warmi to a proposed deletion tag, because I do not believe CSD applies to the page in question. Thank you. Electric Catfish 22:05, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Feedback Dashboard

Hi SwisterTwister. Thank you for your further help, but I don't need it anymore. I decided not to assist with the Feedback Dashboard project as you may have seen what I replied to Gold Standard as the Feedback Dashboard is " tedious, redundant and a job for a bot". I'll maybe use your information to someday make a bot for the Feedback Dashboard. I can see you are primarily focusing on needy feedbacks and ignoring all other feedbacks, which my concern's for the Feedback Dashboard don't affect you. I will be continuing to clean Wikipedia by revising recent changes, reverting vandalism, and maintaining Wikipedia articles. So good luck with the Feedback Dashboard, because I strongly regret ever volunteering for it!

I noticed that you have edited the Cesar Chavez Student Center page various times, but I would like to know what exactly it is I am doing wrong instead of having the work I put up pulled from Wikipedia. My first attempt to edit Wikipedia was in the article around "The Merchant of Venice"; I made an edit I thought was important, which was reverted, then edited again and posted about it on the article's talk page. It was reverted again (marked as vandalism that time) and another user said my edit was useful, but was a bit condescending in telling me off for not asking first. The Children's Media Foundation

You have left a message to say that you have recommended my new entry "The Children;s Media Foundation" for deletion because it is not impartially written.

I admit, I am the Director of the Foundation. Which is why the information is totally accurate. I have tried to place no value judgements within the piece. Granted, there is no criticism or dissenting point of view. But as a relatively new organisation that is as yet unlikely to emerge. The organisation is an important one in the UK - and has wide support. I suspect your view may be the result of you not being a UK resident.

I find it difficult to understand why Wikipedia would not welcome initial articles written by those close to an organisation as the basic text can be assured of being accurate. Over time as the organisation makes more waves in the public space, others will surely edit the article to produce a wider set of viewpoints.

I should point out that my only previous encounter with editing in Wikipedia was my own biography, which i did not post, but which was inaccurate and frankly absurd. I edited it to make it no more than accurate. I am not interested in self promotion. It was then changed back to the original, and this occurred twice before my edit "stuck".

In posting the article on the Foundation I was trying to avoid a repeat of this situation. The Foundation's history is complex, and its aims and activities are diverse and relatively nuanced. It needs to be carefully handled and the people who understand it best at this moment are those engaged in setting it up.

IN the end if you wish to delete it - feel free. I cannot write the article significantly differently as I am closely connected as you suspect. I shall be interested to see what emerges to replace it over time.

About feedbacky things

Hey! I noticed you've been responding to quite a large number of new editor feedbacks (feedbacks?), which is great. However, one you just left on this user's talk page caught my eye. Maybe I'm over-thinking this, but isn't a reply that consists entirely of a link to a page that is even tagged as being "too technical for most readers to understand" a bit terse and unhelpful? In my experience, new editors tend to prefer replies that are more personal and explain things clearly, rather than merely tossing a link their way and moving on. I've gone ahead and invited the user to the Teahouse, in case they would like to ask some questions.  dalahäst (let's talk!) 07:21, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  2. What should I do about stuff like this?

  4. How can I link to unresponded feedback?

(1) No, responses are archived but as mentioned at Wikipedia:New editor feedback, it is possible for admins to hide comments. (2) At times, it's best to ignore comments such as "Wikipedia is fucking gay" because they are probably too young to understand Wikipedia and are simply trolling. If they mature, they may return as a constructive user. (wouldn't be the first time that this has happened) (3) From experience, I've found that the counter will change after a few days. (4) If you are referring to viewing unanswered comments, click "show unanswered" at the left side. I hope I've answered your questions. SwisterTwister talk 22:05, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

De La Soulviet and TenDJiz articles

Hi David. You have recently accepted the De La Soulviet page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_La_Soulviet and suggested to create the TenDJiz's article. I made it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TenDJiz but VWBot sent a message that some of the contents took from tendjiz.com/info. Chinyere Asika

Why did you reject the article for Chinyere Asika? Again, I don't know where you would expect more sources to come from. The ones that I found online are credible enough and this person is a very notable Nigerian born in 1939. As it stands right now in 2012, things still aren't properly documented. If Wikipedia continues to maintain these types of "standards", it will challenging for notable people in Africa to be included here. Context really needs to be considered here. Coingroup (talk) 14:45, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't that Wikipedia needs to change their "standards", rather that articles need to be well-sourced. As I mentioned at your AfC submission, I believe the subject is notable and I appreciate your efforts but I noticed there are sections that are unreferenced. Are all the references listed supporting the sections that aren't sourced? SwisterTwister talk 18:04, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chess960

You have reversed my edits to Chess960 starting position and Chess960 numbering scheme with the summary that it was "unexplained removal"s. Did you not see my summaries which said that Chess960 is already categorised under "Category:Chess variants"? These two articles are daughter articles relating to aspects of a chess variant so it is inappropriate to categorise them as chess variants. It would be better to create Category:Chess960, subcategorise it under Category:Chess variants and put all three related articles there. Could you please remove both of these daughter articles from the wrong category? 90.200.179.189 (talk) 00:32, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Although the articles are related, individual articles should always be categorised regardless of relations. Additionally, it would unnecessary to start a category called "Chess960" with the intent of only containing three articles. SwisterTwister talk 00:37, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Sorry to butt in on one of your AfC reviews, but I noticed you declined this AfC submission, and the creator has posted on the help desk about it. I had a quick scan through the references and see numerous news articles which discuss the company in depth, which would seem to pass notability. It's probably not obvious unless you've done lots of AfC reviews, but a recent discussion on the reviewer's talk page says that, correctly IMHO, aesthetic problems aren't a valid reason to decline an article, as long as it's reliably sourced. Anyone can fix up an article, but they can't make a non-notable person notable! Might be worth popping over to the help desk and having a chat with this user, as they seem a bit confused. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:42, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Virtual Piggy

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick response to my post. Hoping to make the necessary revisions to get this approved.

It sounds like I should entirely remove the first three sections that explain how the product works? I know it may sound somewhat like an advertisement, but it is notable that the product is unique in this space - letting kids make purchases online. There is no comparable service currently available. I tried to make a good amount of changes after the first rejection to make it sound more factual in that regard.

Where sources are concerned, I understand that many of them come from blogs. But they are not from individual/independent blogs, rather the blog sections of what would otherwise be acceptable sources, like the Wall Street Journal. I'm hoping that distinction can be made, in that there are different levels of reliability between blogs.

catching copyvio

I just removed as copyvio a resubmission of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Raglan Housing, which you had previously declined as "written like an advertisement", which was certainly true. Apparently you had not noticed it was entirely or almost entirely copied from their web site.

Removing copyvios is one of the most essential things we need to do at AfC , almost as important as removing vandalism or libel--copyvio is considerably worse than promotionalism or lack of notability. Any apparently well-written article about an organization or person who is likely to have a web site needs to be checked against it--and it's even easier, when the web site is listed at the bottom of the article. I've learned to always check. And then I usually tell the user (as I did here) not to try to give permission, because it would be too promotional to keep in any case DGG ( talk ) 04:47, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That said, no, nothing's troubling me down at Wikiland. Only a little frustrated at times. The talk pages are always rather adversarial in tone and context, and it got to me in the minutes prior to my clicking the unhappy icon. But I've since realized that I should not be spending too much time in talk pages, and instead, concentrate on learning the ropes by doing minor edits on smaller articles.

Yes but unfortunately several of those references are either small mentions or are affiliated with the subject, therefore insufficient to establish notability. Acquiring 70,000 Twitter followers and several fans won't establish notability to Wikipedia's standards. The article needs sources such as news coverage and magazine reviews. Thanks for your efforts though! SwisterTwister talk 04:15, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re your message: Ugh. I deleted their fake user page, too. I think I'm going to give them a short leash should they create anything else. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:00, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
