The Syrian Resistance (Muqāwamat al-Sūriyah Template:Lang-ar} or TSR, formerly known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Sanjak of Alexandretta, is a pro-government Syrian Communist Foco operating in Northwest Syria. Ostensibly, the Syrian Resistance’s ideology is Marxist-Leninist, with particular reverence accorded to the symbol of communist resistance, Che Guevara.
History
The movement is led by Mihraç Ural, a Turkish Alawite who has Syrian citizenship.[4]
The concept of Syrian nationalism also features heavily in TSR’s public discourse and rhetoric. It has been claimed that its purpose is defending the Alawite and Twelver Shi’a communities.[2] The Syrian Resistance has been accused by Syrian opposition as being a sectarian Alawite militia, and of having carried out bombings in Turkey and attacks on villages in Syria.[5]Joshua Landis has written that amongst Shabiha, or Alawite militias, 'which have been adopting a raw religious and increasingly Alawite nationalist rhetoric' Mihrac Ural, or Ali Kyali, has been prominent. He was given Syrian citizenship by Hafiz al-Assad. He has been accused of masterminding the bombing in Reyhanli, and 'in all likelihood', of being the leader of the Banyas massacre as well. In a video recorded a few days before the Banyas massacre, Mihrac Ural explained that Banyas was key to the defense of the coastal region and had to be 'cleaned of rebel combatants'.[6]Sheikh Muwaffaq al-Ghazal, a member of the Islamic Alawi Council, claims it has an inclusive national line.[7]
