Oh no, it's him again!

On the subject of Leyland, I'm a bit light on material for his early career. I've got Wisden up until the 1925 edition, but nothing after until he plays Test cricket apart from the odd fragment of Cardus and from the Times. I'd be extremely grateful if you could do a quick Wisden trawl for 1925-28, and particularly for the MCC tour of India in 1926-27. And of course, anything else you may have! No urgency on this one, just if or when you have the time and inclination. And I may be back for his later career as there were a few seasons when he began very poorly then scored ridiculously heavily in July and August. Cheers! Sarastro1 (talk) 11:51, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have Gibson's book, so that would be great. I'm afraid I don't have the Dodd's book, or anything else on him. Sarastro1 (talk) 16:32, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all that. And the Wisden stuff is actually more useful than it looks. I may be back, cap in hand, before too long! Cheers. Sarastro1 (talk) 17:36, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Really specific one this time! Leyland bowled far more in 1928 than ever before: the obvious explanation being the death of Roy Kilner. I don't suppose Wisden mentions this explicitly for the 1928 season? Sarastro1 (talk) 22:21, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Still in the 1929 edition, the Cricinfo copy of Leyland's cricketer of the year citation says "and a fine forcing game when it is necessary to make runs quietly", which doesn't really make sense. Could you check the original to see if it should say "quickly"? And if it does, what is the page number of the article, and I might change the citation to the paper copy. Sorry to be a pest, but the sourcing should improve from 1928 onwards! Sarastro1 (talk) 22:36, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: A thought

Yes indeed, I'm certainly better described as more active than I am retired! That sounds like a plan with the names, I'll also add the obscure ones to disambiguation pages. I remember doing the lists of Hampshire players a couple of years back, which took an absolute age, it is a long term plan to get one done for all global first-class teams (daunting). I hope those orphan bots don't become as annoying as my old friend the CorenSearchBot! Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 23:35, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why did I let people know I have lots of Wisdens? Especially that Sarastro...

I found this on Leyland, and it's rather good. However, there is no author given. I don't suppose you could check who wrote it? And in which case, I probably need the page reference as well... Sarastro1 (talk) 22:59, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's odd. I thought you bought them to provide me with obscure page references on Yorkshire cricketers in the 1928 season. All my illusions have been shattered. Sarastro1 (talk) 23:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article Billy Frank (producer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable film producer. Fails WP:GNG.

I know you've got plenty to keep yourself occupied with, but I thought I'd let you know that I've set up a "task force" for articles relating to Somerset County Cricket Club. It's mostly somewhere to take stock of what there is, and what needs improving. Given your work on Somerset articles in the past, I thought it might interest you. Apologies

Dear Johnlp,

I must apologise for barging in on your work on David Kirby. I hadn't checked to see whether anybody had been working on him recently, and when I looked at the history (after I'd done my bit) I was mortified to see that you had just created his page and were still going.

Please forgive my breach of etiquette. You might find some of my contribution useful; otherwise please feel at liberty to ditch the rest.

It was especially mortifying to me, as I admire your work. Apart from obvious love of the game and respect for the players, you bring a level of literacy and a sense of proportion that are rare among cricket Wikipedians.

Regards,

Sammyrice (talk) 00:33, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

David Kirby et al

Thanks for that reassuring message. You will note the date discrepancy from the two Wisdens: did he start in 1963 or 1968? I'll leave that there for a future researcher to solve. As you say, there is so much to do; plenty of work for all of us. I'll try to be careful not to tread on toes in future. But there is still the Battle of Chris Duckworth to be fought...

Elliot

The CU player was listed in the ACS guide to CU cricketers as Sir George Elliot 1812 to 1901 one of several Sir George Elliots including the contemporaneous industrialist. The scotish birthdate came later and put him a year younger but it was not a requirement to be in residence to play(IG Peck and JM Brearley) for the university and still isn't. Only the University match requires that qualification. The more famous Admiral Elliot was Scotish and I presume the Admiral GA Elliot, his son was the cricketer - it is too much of a co-incidence otherwise. P Bailey who compiles CA is impossible to shift if he believes something and I presume he has not seen a birth certificate and thus has not appended the 'Augustus' second name. Were GA Elliot a naval officer, he would have attended Dartmouth rather than Cambridge. By the age of 20-23 he would have likely been at sea in command of something. My father in law was a Surgeon Commander and he has free access to the Navy list but it will be December before I see him though I can get him on Skype in about a fortnight (he's on holiday at present). The issue with CA has always been that PB is unwilling to trust all but a few contributors if he himself has not seen the evidence at first hand. Hold on - by chance I have a list or two her and the one for 1848 lists him(on raising to rank of Admiral (age 36) as George Elliot - the Augustus may have been a later affectation. I would say the Admiral G Elliot is certainly the cricketer from 1831. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CDTPP (talkcontribs) 13:14, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Launcelot Ward may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • Seth Ward who, at the time of Launcelot's birth, was vicar of [[Apsley End]], Hertfordshire]] and was later a vicar in [[Worcestershire]].<ref name="obit"/> He was educated at [[Felsted School]

Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 18:42, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A passing note

The discussion on WT:CRIC reminded me that I meant to mention how much I enjoy the stuff that you do quietly on here. I particularly liked looking over Walter Keeton, but you always seem to be up to something worthwhile! There seem to be so few people on the cricket project these days, unfortunately. Information on offer.

Hello. I've done only very simple Wiki editing in the past. It is because I've been a keen lifelong family historian that I collected information about William Meryweather because at one time it seemed he might have had some connection to my own Merryweather [sic] family. If anyone would like this miscellaneous material in order to supplement the article, it's freely available from:-

CUCC list

Hey, apologies. I'd already done substantial work fore I realised you were on same task. Had to decide whether to abandon or carry on. As I had the dates, went ahead. Your list was nearly complete except for the Ws and I had those. A lot of them too! All I needed was the wikinames and I followed your lead on those. I'm doing both unis, Oxford same format – dates, scorecard version of name and then the wikiname. Wikinames hold things up. Each has to be checked for existing use. Well, cool, apologies again. Hope Xmas is good and wish you the best in 2014. --Bill (talk) 12:49, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Aargh, it's him!

Belated season's greetings, and another request, I'm afraid. I'm looking to see if the Abe Waddington article can be beefed up a little, having found some nice juicy scandal about him in the Yorkshire Post just after the War. With that in mind, I think his playing career needs de-statsing to get away from the list of numbers. I'd be ever so grateful if you could check the 1920, 1927, and 1928 Yorkshire summary in Wisden. And maybe the 1929 for good measure. I have the Willows versions of the rest, and get the impression that poor old Abe was not too highly thought of. So any snippets, even just "he was dreadful" would be useful. Cheers! Sarastro1 (talk) 00:19, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Much obliged, thanks! Sarastro1 (talk) 11:23, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

List of Leicestershire CCC players

Hey and thanks for your help with this. Much appreciated. I can't see wood for trees. Made a point of removing all who played in the war only and didnt think to alter dates of those who started or finished in the war! Must check other lists to correct same oversight if there. Not too many redlinks in foxy land, unlike Lancs and others. Cool. Thanks again. --Bill (talk) 07:43, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Albert or Alfred

I would be inclined to move the article to A. E. Bailey, and provide both possibilities for his first name, unless we find a third source (that isn't a mirror or copy from one of the others) that clarifies one way or the other. I would be inclined to agree that CA is more likely to be right, but given that he would have been referred to by his initials during his career, this seems the safest way to go for now. Harrias talk 10:21, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Glamorgan list

Hey, thanks for correcting the date. You highlighted fundamental problem with templates there! It had been adjusted for Essex and then not for Glamorgan. Dough (or whatever)! Anyway. Done with lists and redlinks now. Away for a month from next week and then start something else when I come back. Probably Sydney Barnes. Doing a bit on Syd Brown in meantime but short of time now. Thank you for your help in last few months. Much appreciated. Hope to pick up with you again in March. Best. --Bill (talk) 08:19, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
