==Early life and education== |
Bongino attended the City University of New York, where he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology, and Penn State University, where he earned a masters in business administration. |
==New York City Police Department== |
Bongino began his career with the New York City Police Department in 1995 as a police cadet while attending the City University of New York full time. During his tenure in the cadet program, Bongino was a member of the distinguished pattern identification unit which specialized in the identification and apprehension of serial criminals. He also performed many hours of undercover operations in a number of inner city communities. Bongino graduated from the cadet program and became a full-time police officer in 1997, where he graduated with honors from the police academy. |
==U.S. Secret Service== |
Bongino joined the U.S. Secret Service in 1999 as a special agent after graduating from the Secret Service training academy with honors. Beginning his career in the New York Field Office, he investigated computer crimes, bank fraud, credit card fraud, protective intelligence, and counterfeiting. One of his cases involved more than $300 million in potential financial fraud with a nexus to international terrorism. This joint investigation -- in cooperation with the FBI, IRS, SSA and a number of local police agencies -- decimated a major international fraud ring. As a result, Bongino won a Department of Justice recognition award, along with other agency specific awards, for excellence in federal investigations. |
He left the New York Field Office in 2002 to become an instructor at the Secret Service Training Academy in Beltsville, Maryland. He was the project manager for the re-design of the investigative tactics training program which he subsequently taught to incoming trainees. Bongino was awarded a number of commendations for his work in researching and re-designing the investigative curriculum to reflect current trends in federal crime. |
In 2006, Bongino was assigned to the U.S. Presidential Protection Division during George W. Bush's term and graduated at the top of his class in the difficult detail training program. He became one of the earliest tenured Special Agents to be given responsibility for an operational section of the protective detail. He remained on protective duty after Barack Obama became U.S. President and distinguished himself as the highest ranking member of his operational shift of agents. He was designated as lead agent for coordination of the President's trip to Prague, Czech Republic to sign the New START treaty. He also was lead agent for the U.S. President's visit to Jakarta, Indonesia and to an active war zone in Afghanistan. Bongino was awarded a series of commendations and left the protective detail as one of the most distinguished agents in their history. |
