Gauri Pradhan Tejwani (Template:Lang-mr) (born 16 September 1977) is a model turned noted Indian television actress and businesswoman best known for playing the role of Gauri Mittal in Kutumb (aired on Sony until 2003) and Nandini Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (aired on Star Plus until 2008). She is currently playing the character of Falguni Harshad Parekh (mother of the female lead Ishaani) in the tele-series Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi (which is aired on Colors).
Early life and education
Gauri Pradhan was born in Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir, India to a Maharashtrian family from the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu community. Her father major Subhash Vasudeo Pradhan is a retired Indian Army Officer and her mother Asha is a homemaker. She is the second of three siblings; her older brother Bharat, is a Petrochemical Engineer, while her younger sister Geetanjali, is a doctor BHMS. M.D. Gauri is the only one in her family to have pursued modelling and acting as a career.
Her childhood was spent travelling throughout the country owing to the nature of her father's job. As a result she studied in different schools,one of them was the Carmel Convent School, Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir). After her father's retirement, the family settled in Pune (Maharastra) where she attended S.P. College for a course in BSc.(Electronics).[1] Later she enrolled for a course in Psychology from an institute affiliated to London University.[2]
Personal life
Pradhan met her future husband Hiten Tejwani in Hyderabad while shooting for a commercial for Breeze soap. Later on, they met on the sets of tele-series Kutumb (aired on Sony TV) and were coincidentally cast as the lead pair. The onscreen love – hate scenes between the couple (Pratham and Gauri) were highly loved by the audience. The onscreen chemistry led to brewing of passionate romance between them and they started dating each other. While playing the characters of star crossed lovers Karan and Nandini in another popular daily soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (aired on Star Plus), they decided to tie the knot.[3]
After two years of courtship, they got married at a private function in the Sun-n-Sand Hotel, Pune, on 29 April 2004, as per Maharashtrian customs. Soon after they went to Ko Samui (Thailand) for honeymoon. Their reception was held at Juhu's Army Club on May 9, 2004 with over 400 guests.[4][5]
On 11 November 2009, they became parents when Gauri delivered twins, son Nevaan and daughter Katya at the Lilavati Hospital, Bandra (Mumbai).[6]
Gauri is a pet lover and owns a pug named Beckham, whom she and her husband consider as their first baby.[7]
Career
Pradhan’s modelling stint commenced at the tender age of 18, primarily in Pune. In 1998, while still in her second year of B.Sc. course she moved to Mumbai to take part in Miss India and reached among the ten finalists along with Smriti Irani.[8][9][10] She did a lot of ramp shows and has done television commercials for many well known companies such as Sprite, Bru, Dabur, Ponds, Santoor, keo karpin, Colgate, Philips , Breeze etc.[11]
She made her acting debut with the historical tele-series Noor Jahan which was telecasted in Doordarshan in the year 1999. As per Pradhan, she never thought of becoming an actor, but when Cinevistaas offered her the lead role in Noor Jahan , she decided to give it a shot.
She also appeared in three music videos (which were Talat Aziz's Khubsoorat, Hans Raj Hans's Jhanjar and Sonu Nigam's Yaad) during the year 2000 to 2001.
In October 2001 she rose to fame with tele-series Kutumb on Sony TV where she played the lead role of Gauri Agarwal Mittal. But the Show ended in 2002. Her Chemistry with her co-star Hiten Tejwani was so well praised and liked by the audiences that the channel & production house brought the second season of the show along with the same leads. Soon after Kutumb Season 2, In 2003 she did a cameo in Krishna Arjun as Shweta (that aired on Star Plus) and then she appeared in another family drama named Naam Gum Jayega (that aired on Sony TV) as the female lead; Priyanka Singh. In 2003, she also appeared in one of the episodes of the horror tele-series Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat (that aired on Sony TV) as Mayuri.
In the year 2002, she participated in one of the episodes of the singing reality show Kisme Kitna Hai Dum (that aired on Star Plus) along with other television actors.
After a string of cameos and a short series, In 2004 she was approached to play the supporting lead in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus as Nandini Thakkar. The role brought her name & fame that she won almost all the awards of her career for her portrayal in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. In the same year, she appeared in Isse Kehte Hai Golmaal Ghar that aired on Sahara One channel as the main lead opposite Manav Gohil.The series premiered on October 30, 2004, and aired on every Saturday at 8:30pm IST.
In March 2005, she entered the popular show Special Squad (that aired on Star One) as the Forensic Expert and Special Squad head Dr. Deepika Ghosh. In the same year, she has also made special appearances in other Indian series like Rihaee and Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin on Sony TV.
In the year 2006, she participated in reality shows such as Nach Baliye 2 (a celebrity couple dance reality show) and Jodi Kamaal Ki (a celebrity couple game show) on Star Plus along with her husband Hiten Tejwani. In the same year, she entered the romantic drama-series Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai (that aired on Sony TV) as Kannan.
In May 2008, she entered the youth oriented show Left Right Left (that aired on SAB TV) as Captain Shona Das, an army consultant.[12] In that vary year, she along with her husband Hiten Tejwani appeared as contestant in two reality shows; Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar (that aired on Sony TV) and Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? (that aired on Star Plus). In 2008, Gauri and her husband also hosted some of the episodes of celebrity couple dance reality show Nach Baliye 4 (that aired on Star Plus).
In 2009, She did a long cameo in Star Plus's afternoon long running hit show Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan as Aditti along with her husband..
After having twins, Gauri took a five year break from television and decided not to work till her children turned four. During her break, she pursued her passion for Porcelain Painting. She learned about this form of painting under Sangita Shetty Chowhan. Gauri is also one of the partner of the company called Colours On Fire, owned by Sangita . Colours On Fire is a start-up art studio, that provide one-of-a-kind individually customised pieces to home decor stores, architects or even individuals, who value uniqueness. The company also provides tools and training to recreational artists.[13][14]
In 2010, she along with her husband opened a Restro-bar named Barcode 053 (a franchise of Crepe Station Café, a Mumbai based chain of restaurants owned by Morea Brothers) at Andheri in Mumbai. Barcode 053 is the first such franchise partly owned by the couple.[15][16]
In the same year she also appeared in one of the episodes of the popular female celebrity game show Meethi Choori No 1 which aired on NDTV Imagine.
In 2014, after a long hiatus of five years, she made her comeback on television with Ekta Kapoor's show, Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi (which is aired on Colors) as Falguni Harshad Parekh.[17]
