What is the purpose of adding "|border" to profile images?

What is the purpose of adding the "|border" to the images on articles? It causes an error on mouseover and won't display the profile image. I have reverted this change now 3 times on the Barack Obama article, asking for an explanation on the Talk page. And you keep adding it without giving an explanation. If it is not necessary (I see no benefit on display using any device I use to browse Wikipedia), then it should not be added. Thanks. Dave Dial (talk) 02:25, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
