Robert Adrian (1935-2015), also known as Robert Adrian X, was a Canadian-born artist known for his work in radio and telecommunications art.[1] Adrian moved from Canada to Vienna in 1972 where he created experimental artworks using radio and communications technologies for which he would become known. His work The World in 24 hours, which connected artists in different cities and continents through telephone lines and radio, is considered to be one one of the fist experiments in online culture.[2] At the time of his death, the Austrian minister of culture Josef Ostermayer called Adrian "ein Pionier der Medienkunst" (a pioneer of media art).[3]

Life

Adrian was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada on February 22, 1935.[4][5][6]. He moved to Vienna in 1972, where he lived until his death in 2015.[7][8][9][10]

Work

Adrian was a pioneer of early telecommunications art and experimentation.[3][8] One of his earliest telecommunications projects, in collaboration with Bill Bartlett,[11] was the organization and implementation of one of the first electronic mail systems for artists in 1979-80.[12] Using the business computer network of the company I. P. Sharp Associates in its Vienna office,[13] Adrian was instrumental in setting up the system ARTBOX (later renamed to ARTEX)[14] in 1979 for mail and media artists to use to communicate between eachother.[15][16][17]

In 1982, Adrian organized Die Welt in 24 Stunden (The World in 24 Hours), a telecommunications work that used telephone lines and Slow-scan television to link sixteen cities on three continents together.[18][19][20][21] The piece, widely cited as an early example of networked electronic art and culture,[2][20][17][14] was commissioned by and presented at Ars Electronica Linz.[22][23]

Awards

In 2009, Adrian was a co-recipient of the $50,000 USD Nam June Paik Art Center Prize.[24]
