{{Ivmbox|Hello, GraemeL. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

I note that you have once again removed the entire External Links section from this article. Could you please clarify what kinds of external links *are* permissible in a Wikipedia Article, given that the Wikipedia article on Wikipedia itself contains a large number of external links? If the purpose of Wikipedia is to serve as a reference, surely an article on a subject which by definition is related to the conversion of text to speech using software, should reference examples of software for performing said conversion that falls within the definition and scope of the article?

May I humbly suggest that if discussion with other topic experts is required to -add- a link to Wikipedia under its guidelines, you might also consider discussing the deletion of all links with that same community, prior to taking unilateral action? <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mlearning (talk • contribs) Mlearning.</small><!-- Template:Unsigned -->

:Listing examples of software does nothing but encourage spamming and violates WP:NOT a web directory. If you want to link to a web directory category (such as Dmoz) then that would be an acceptable link. Once articles start linking to individual software products, they accrue large lists over time.

:The article on Wikipedia itself has a large, yet apparently good list of external links. It links to Wikimedia Foundation pages, news and scholarly articles on the project. : Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. == Removal of list of chastity belt manufacturers ==

Hi - just to let you know, I reverted your edit that removed all the manufacturer links from Chastity belt - although people occasionally do add 'spam' links to this section, the collection of links there as a whole is a legitimate capturing of the current set of CB manufacturers so I don't think it constitutes 'spam' and I think has a legitimate place on Wiki - happy to discuss if you like --Mortice 23:42, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

:Links to manufacturers are commercial links and not appropriate in anything apart from articles on the individual companies. they serve as nothing more than promotion. If you can find a site that provides a directory of manufacturers, that would be a good alternative. --GraemeL (talk) 00:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Bob's a stock-picker with a terrible record, and a glowing Wikipedia article (previously taken straight from his own web site). For some reason, I can't insert any documentation of his terrible stock picking record (from WSJ, Business Week, Esquire, etc., but they did let in the Fortune quote). :As you can easy check the .info site still violates the copyright and . This article is written by me and John simple removed the author. Just a link to GNU FDL doesn't help much. There is no page on the whole .info wiki that is not written by "John Spikowski" so this should make you wonder. I have no problem with AdSense but the content is simple stolen and he is not willing to give credit to the original author. Also the whole mailing list is not originally from his site. He copies the emails from the Yahoo website, removes all references to the original source and make them to appear from his site. Just compare and . Also the argument .info is older doesn't hold as a look on web.archive.org shows. The first entries are from April 2001. I still strongly belief that Wikipedia should not support such behavior and directing users to this site. Sure you don't need to belief me but please ask John for some evidence (expect that he knows Brian and will call him which is a WP:PAIN and he used this also against me (and I can still edit :)) and also with Qutezuce ) of his arguments (like the .org wiki is and illegal copy). If you really like to know what he did with the PanoTools the short summary at may interest you. You can also read Johns version at but again this is the version told by one person without any references. I hope you can put this long sad story to an end. Thx for your help. --Wuz 00:59, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Scraper site
The copyright situation of panotools.info is still a problem on Panorama Tools. The situation doesn't change with adding one GFDL button as John Spikowski claims: "I have added the license to the footer as you have asked" is only half of the truth when we compare one article as an example: several editors edited while User:John Spikowski seems to have managed all of this with one single update but forgot to mention the real contributors on . The wiki at panotool.info doesn't reveal editors on the Recent Changes page. --Einemnet 23:13, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

If I understand correctly the GFDL requires to preserve the complete history (paragraph 2.I.). Furthermore John violates the copyright of all PanotoolsNG yahoo group mailing list members on panotools.info. He maintains an "archive" where he uses to comment, delete or strip down original posts to his liking and where he states that the author is a member of his "panotools group".

In fact this "archive" is mixed up of several lists without the possibility to tell which post origins from which list and without the possibility to reply to the original list (replies go to his list only). He is not even a member of the yahoo mailing list and he was banned from the list.

His own own contributions to his page are mostly limited to fighting against panotoolsNG and wild accusation that the list and the wiki had be stolen from him. If you are interested in the incidents which led to that situation, please read the panotools list history. This also sheds some light on Mr. Spikowski...

--Erik Krause 20:02, 25 November 2006 (UTC) (PanotoolsNG Mailing List moderator and panotools.org wiki sysop)

Erik and the other NG self appointed moderators for some reason have the notion that the PanoTools group is one person. There are over 100 members in the annoucement list and 22 new members on the forum we just got going after switching to this format. The site is getting 2000+ site visits a day and is the primary resource in the major search engines with over 25K pages indexed. (the NG group isn't even on the map)

Can you change the NG link to point to their group site (like the PanoTools link does) and remove all then un-needed others?

I have sent many e-mails to the NG moderators trying to come to some agreement so the fighting will stop but they only respond when 'on stage' here on the Wikipedia. I feel the NG moderator that post here should be ban till they stop all this nonsense.

General question about external links in :Category:Lists of software
Is it just by accident that you picked List of UML tools for your "removal of tools from lists rampage" (under the title "linkspam cleanup" , ) or are you planning to "clean up" the whole :Category:Lists of software? Just looking up a couple of articles from said category shows for example List of Jabber client software, List of Jabber component software, List of Linux distributions, or List of download managers having entries with external links. What are your plans for the mentionend articles? Are you going to remove entries from those lists that have an external link as well? --Ligulem 13:45, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Virtual_Tape_Library
Hi,

I am the one orignaly responsible for adding a list of vendors to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Tape_Library

I came in today because I had the other implementations of this type of technology and wanted to update the section accordingly. Also splitting it into sections and describing different types - software / hardware (as done in the iscsi section). Wanted to also have a further section that describes the types of features you can often expect in VTL.

Found however that you deleted the whole section. From your reference I think I understand the reason.

I wanted to do something simular to these two pages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iscsi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_backup_software

So the bit I am trying to get my head around is should those two above sections exist in the Wikipedia (iscsi page has an implementation/vendor list, list_of_backup_software is just that) or did I go about it the wrong way.

The reason I posted the stuff was I thought I was consistant with the Wikipedia. Reading the rules of what Wikipedia is not, now I am uncertain. I personally use the WP to find out what technologies do and find the references to 3rd party sites and vendors very useful. Used WP for iSCSI and when i looked at VTL there werent any so later after I did my own research I thought I would contribute to that page (obviously wrongly).

I guess understanding the nuances of what goes in and out would be helpful. ie how does the above two links differ to what ive done. Appart from the updates to that page there were some other sections but I dont want to waste our collective time but putting stuff in that needs to be removed. <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Storageman (talk • contribs) 16:56, 13 December 2006 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->

Dear Graeme

I have taken your name from the wikipedia list of people who might be able to get a deleted file back for me. If so I would be very grateful for your help as the two articles I seek were deleted without any discussion. Please could you see if you could obtain the written information on the following two people. Please could you contact me on "mytalk"

Ernest Henry Cooper (Wembley)

Henry Francis Cooper (Stonebridge Park)

John Langhorne (giggleswickschool)

I would be very grateful if you could help me with this

thanks

Hi,

I was hoping you could add our social networking site to your directory.

We recently launched one for the franchise industry.

I tried to add it but you deleted it (I wasn't familiar with how to use Wikipedia at the time).

I would truly appreciate this. I'm writing an article about our site right now.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely yours,

WP:SCOWNB Participants merger with WP:SCO
As I hope you may have seen I am attempting to tidy up WP:SCOWNB by removing old notices and the duplication that has emerged since the creation of WP:SCO. One of the latter issues is that there are lists of active Wikipedians on both locations which overlap to a significant degree. As WP:SCOWNB is ideally a place for announcements I am in process of merging the lists at WP:SCO and intend to remove the one at WP:SCOWNB when this is complete. However there are a fair number of Users not on both lists. If you do not wish to have you current WP:SCOWNB entry re-appear at WP:SCO please either let me know or edit the latter as appropriate. == Link to relevant blog is permitted under the guidelines. ==

If you take the time to read the guidelines and the blog in question you will see that it is in fact relevant.

The blog is a collection of political reviews and analysis related to Ukraine. It is the sole purpose and content of the blog.

It most certainly does comply with the WIKI guidelines. I request that it be reinstated.

Hi, I'm new on wikipedia. I try to contribute on various music articles, regarding the European dance music styles.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
There is one specific guy with the IP 76.105.187.236 that reverted one of my contributions regarding the term "eurotrance", without any discussion. At the same time he called on the talk page the brits "Idiots", because of my contribution (The funny thing is that I'm not British...)

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
I saw that you are a moderator and I'm contacting you to point me other moderators specialised on music subjects, to talk about this problem.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Hi GraemeL,

{{ivmbox|The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
I've been researching some of the technologies behind mashups (which we love :-) ) and I noticed you made some early contributions on mashups.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
There seems to be only a limitated explaination of the enabling technologies behind them. Where feeds are already available mashups can be created but only recently have some of the major players looked beyond simple screen scraping and into wrapping websites in order to create feeds where feeds don't currently exist.
#Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
#Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
I've drafted a Wiki on this which is posted on my user page and I'd greatly appreciate any and all help in beating it into shape.

Hi - I posted an article called "Drinking Cricket" and got informed it would be deleted - which I queried on the talk page.
Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed&#32;if you do not return to activity within the next month.
The game is a valid game that is becoming more popular in the uk and I don't know why it has been deleted. I explained this on the talk page but I can not check to see if there has been a response as that has also been deleted! Can you help please?

hello, User:Astrotrain is trying to place the Arms of Great Britain on the Scotland page. This user claims on User talk:Astrotrain that "They are the Queen's Royal Arms, and they were linked to the relevant page. You can find the compromise agreement in the archives of the Scotland talk page." I finally located in the archives archives a conversation which involved yourself. My understanding from reading these archives is that there was no clear compromise, and if there was, it was to keep the status quo and not add the arms. I am contacting you over this matter as User:Astrotrain is continuing to try to add the said arms and has today stated in Talk:Scotland "There was a clear consensus, you can ask any of the other editors. I suspect you have other motives for making these changes. If you insist on moving the arms, they will be reinstated in the infobox then." and I see your name as one of those involved and perhaps could clarify my misunderstanding. Would you will be willing to answer a few questions about your experience? We've done considerable background research, but we would also like to gather the insight of the actual editors. Details about the project can be found at the user page of the project leader, geraldckane. Survey questions can be found at geraldckane/medsurvey. ArbCom 2017 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, GraemeL.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

 1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
 2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
