Mufaddal Saifuddin (Arabic: مفضل سيف الدين) is the son of late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (52nd Da'i) and claimant of 53rd Da'i al-Mutlaq of the Dawoodi Bohras.[1]

It is said that, Late Syedna Burhanuddin had declared his "nass" (investiture) on his son Mufaddal Saifuddin in London on 4 June 2011.[2][3] Contrary to the claim, Khuzaima Qutbuddin half-brother of Mohammed Burhanuddin and rival claimant to the title of Dai-al-Mutlaq claimed that his half-brother appointed him heir around 50 years ago while conferring on him the title of "mazoon".[4][5]

Saifuddin is the omara (parson) of the "Jamea-tus-Saifiah", a 200 years old Dawoodi Bohra community.[6] He also monitors the Al Jamea Saifiyah (founded in 1814 by the 43rd Dai Abdeali Saifuddin), an Islamic Arabic Academy situated in Surat in the Indian state of Gujarat.[6]

Early life

Saifuddin was born on 20 August 1946. He was named "Aali Qadr Mufaddal" (Arabic:عالي قدر مفضل) by his grandfather Taher Saifuddin (51th Syedna).[6] It is said that during the era of 51th Syedna Taher Saifuddin, he publicly recited Quran in Saifee Villa in Sri Lanka.[6] Saifuddin is married to Jawharat-u-sharaf Aai Saheba, daughter of Amir-ul-Jamea’ Syedi Yusuf Najmuddin.[6]

The Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid on 28 Rabi' al-thani 1435 AH (28 February 2014 CE) accompanied Mufaddal to Mumbai airport to see off for his first visit abroad after demise of late Syedna. It is reported that he "presented a letter of good wishes from Indian Congress President Sonia Gandhi as Mufaddal left for his first trip abroad to Iraq, after accession to the 53rd Dā'ī office". [9]

Succession controversy

Following the death of 52nd Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin, there arose a controversy over the legitimate heir of the 52nd Syedna. Muffadal Saifuddin, second son of Burhanuddin claimed that his father had performed "nass" (succession) and declared him, his successor in London while surviving a stroke on 4 June 2011. On 5 June 2011, a Bohra community a website also announced that, Syedna Burhanuddin has declared Mufaddal Saifuddin as the head of the community.[10] This was followed by a reported public succession ceremony at Mumbai, where late Syedna’s son- in- law made public announcement on his behalf, due to his medical condition of speaking. [11][12]

Soon after the demise of Buhranuddin, Khuzaima Qutbuddin half-brother of Mohammed Burhanuddin and rival claimant to the title of Dai-al-Mutlaq claimed that his half-brother appointed him heir around 50 years ago while conferring on him the title of 'mazoon', that is the second in line, after the Syedna and published a public notice on his website declaring the same.[4][5] And that the succession ceremony was staged using the debilitated stroke ridden body of Burhanuddin[13].
