User conduct, buttons, and such
First - I am really impressed with User:Levivich/Conduct problem (and did link to it) Second - w.r.t. the button(s): How do you dictate the color?, and would you be offended if I stole/copied them? — Ched (talk) 00:42, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ooh, color me intruiged CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 01:48, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Heh, heh, "color" me impressed. GeneralNotability (talk) 20:47, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Ched! The short answer to your question is |class=neutral
for gray, |class=destructive
for red (the default is |class=progressive
or blue). You can also add a |style=
for overriding css, and I'm not sure what the css parameter is (bgcolor?) but that's probably how to set it to one of the non-standard colors.
Longer explanation and for the sake of TPWs: that page is part of User:Levivich/Help; it and all the subpages are made using {{User:Levivich/Helpbtn}}, which creates the button and accompanying text, making it easy to add/remove buttons and change the formatting across all the subpages (and could potentially be used to make other decision trees like this). {{User:Levivich/Helpbtn}} uses {{CLB2}} to make the button, and passes along |class=
(progressive/blue, netural/gray, destructive/red), with progressive as the default, and also |style=
. (|1=
is the button link target pagename, |2=
is the button label, and |text=
is the accompanying text.)
Yes, of course feel free to steal/copy it! You can literally steal (move w/o redirect) the pages if that'd be useful. It's sort of just incubating in my userspace but I don't really have any further plans for it and would love to see it be put to some use. Levivich 05:23, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- oops on me. I did see your reply but it was right when I was heading to bed, and I figured I'd respond in the morning - but my memory let me down. First, thank-you for the info. Second, I could see this in some sort of wiki Help format, section, area. It would be a lot of pages to move, but doable. Probably easier to just post a link over there ... somewhere. Move to my space? .. :-) .. ty for the offer, but I think they're fine and in good hands as is. — Ched (talk) 21:02, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
@Ched, CaptainEek, and GeneralNotability: I'm trying a new implementation of this. Check out {{help button}}, which creates (as well as the buttons used at its target, WP:Help button). Levivich 17:06, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- Levivich, Schnazzy! I quite like that. One note: I would put "Article subjects" in blue, not red, on the template itself. Otherwise, great idea, buttons are always fun CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 17:22, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! And done. I had it blue before and couldn't decide; you've clinched it. (Also I love how easy it was to change that just now. Templates are so useful.) Levivich 17:27, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
@Valereee: If you like this/are still interested, {{help button}} can be copied to {{DYK help button}} (or whatever) and used to create a DYK help button and the buttons in a DYK help tree, just like at WP:Help button. In the {{help button}} source, just change WP:Help button
to whatever target, and Help!
to whatever you want the default label to be (or I'm happy to do it for you if you tell me what you want it to be called). Levivich 17:06, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- Sweet! I like that. TY for all the work on this. — Ched (talk) 18:30, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay, missed the ping. I would love something like that for DYK, and I'd appreciate it if you would set it up as I'd just have to ask you to fix it if I tried. DYK Help would be fine, I think? At least to start with, and then others at DYK might have an opinion? —valereee (talk) 11:28, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Valereee: I'll work on my aim. {{DYK help}} Levivich 19:59, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

- Well this'll be entertaining :-) I have no idea what the DYK help "tree" should look like: like, which pages are we linking. Did you have in mind one page of links, or a multi-page tree like WP:Help button (with subpages, etc.)? If it's just one page, you can basically edit the buttons, change the link targets and labels, and it should be pretty easy (and hopefully the template doc is clear?). If multi-page, then you'll need to create whatever subpages you want, and use the "back" button functionality. I watchlisted the page, but feel free to ask if you have any questions! You're kind of my test case for whether this is clear/easy enough for others to use. Levivich 16:40, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- There are a couple of sidebar navboxes at WP:DYK. I wouldn't by any means include all of them, but I'd probably include a link to the Semi-automated tool for nominating an article, How to review, Questions about DYK?. I'm not sure about rules...maybe a Rules button that branches to Wikipedia:Did you know and Wikipedia:Did you know/Supplementary guidelines? I don't want the initial tree itself to look as complicated as those navboxes. The whole point is to make it feel less complicated to the newest users. I would include instructions on promoting/moving. Sort of feeling my way along, here. —valereee (talk) 17:34, 22 June 2021 (UTC) I'm always the test case. If Val can do it, anyone can!
- Okay, someone check my work
in my sandboxat the actual button. —valereee (talk) 18:08, 22 June 2021 (UTC)- Looks good to me! And I pressed all the buttons and they work. Good job! Levivich 21:39, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello Levivich! Interstellarity (talk) has given you a bit of sunshine to brighten your day! Sunshine promotes WikiLove and hopefully it has made your day better. Spread the sunshine by adding {{subst:User:Meaghan/Sunshine}} to someone else's talk page, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. In addition, you can spread the sunshine to anyone who visits your userpage and/or talk page by adding {{User:Meaghan/Sunshine icon}}. Happy editing! Byte count
"I wish the preview button told you how many bytes the edit is going to be. I would make every ANI edit 666." Get a Unix shell (if you can't find a Unix shell, get an operating system that has one, even Windows can do it nowadays) and type echo "my text here [[User:Levivich|Levivich]] 21:37, 22 June 2021 (UTC)" | wc -c
(replacing what's between quotes with the raw text in "show changes", including your expanded signature). Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:14, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip! Now when people ask why every edit I make is exactly 69 bytes, I'll be sure to tell them who taught me ;-) Levivich 17:28, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Yup, that's me all right More typically I'm described as unusually discourteous, unreserved, overbearing and aggressive, unfriendly, addicted to open confrontation, with a tendency towards hyperbole, and inclined to make a direct fuss and stand out... also known as "New York nice." Levivich 19:36, 25 June 2021 (UTC)- Context! You were just a comedy prop there, I'm sorry to say... Addendum: Probably best to just spell it out — WO thread about this. El_C 20:41, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- @El C: do you find it weird that there are people who aren't allowed on this website talking on another website about what you do on this website? Cuz I think that's weird. Levivich 01:29, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Clarification?
Hi Levivich, I appreciate your input at ANI. You made a comment that seemed directed at me. If it was, you wrote that I "should avoid riding high horses for a while". For clarity, can you please tell me what I've done that is riding a high horse? I immediately stopped editing with UberVegan and the only time I brought up Uber was trying to get them to take it off their userpage. And, I warned them first before going public. Thanks for any clarification. The Kingfisher (talk) 21:51, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- So when you said "You're insane! No, I have no idea who The Kingfisher is! Are you crazy???!!!", that was not only a lie, but also telling the other person that they were crazy to think it, i.e. gaslighting. So when you write things at ANI like "I was informed by Maxim that ARBCOM approved my appeal, that I was not a sockpuppet" (if you're in compliance now, that means you are not socking, it doesn't mean you were not socking) and "I am simply an editor with two accounts. Period." (No, not "period"; you pretended your two accounts were two different people, that's more than "simply" an editor with two accounts.) You accuse the other editor of being disingenuous in that thread multiple times, while also making these statements that don't entirely accurately describe the history. That's what I meant by get off your high horse. You have a valid complaint here but at the same time I don't think you are entirely innocent of (past) wrongdoing yourself and there's a difference between approaching it as "I know I messed up but I don't deserve this" and approaching it as "how dare you". Levivich 01:51, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for responding. A few things:
- I addressed my pre-block behavior by equating it with Andy Dufresne's actions (lying, sockpuppetry, fake identity, etc., while trying to escape prison after being falsely accused of a crime). I don't see how my situation was any different. But you (and the editors who denied my block appeal) focused nearly entirely on pre-block behavior. Luckily for me, after ARBCOM heard my side and investigated, it got past that.
- When I wrote that "Maxim informed me that ARBCOM approved my appeal, that "I was not a sockpuppet," I was referring to The Kingfisher. Obviously, UberVegan was a sock, and I wasn't trying to imply otherwise.
- My request to Snoog and reason for bringing my complaint to ANI was because my two accounts, at this time, are not sockpuppets. That's why I wrote that I am [now] simply an editor with two [clean] accounts. Meaning, I should be treated under the same policies as all editors, not differently because of my past.
- You suggested that I should have come at this from an "I know I messed up but I don't deserve this" position. I won't do that because I don't think that I "screwed up." If I were falsely accused again of being a sock and blocked, I would do the same thing again. Or do you suggest that Andy should have just excepted his life sentence in prison?
- Pointing out that they were disingenuous is not mutually exclusive of my past. They said that I had made "baseless claims" since I've was reinstated. I made one. And, they were purposely inaccurate on how they wrote it on their userpage.
- Anyway, thank you for allowing me to clarify. The Kingfisher (talk) 19:04, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
