I think YouTube.com maximizes equal opportunity for all the ordinary folks out there, like you and me and this silly Brooker chick. It is truly an extrodinary technology! I mean, the foundation of this country was built upon such an idea of unrestricted, competence-based, equal-opportunity offered to hardworking and passionate people everywhere. And YouTube.com helped resurrect this principle once again.

Chain Letters

i think there should be a article about the resent chain letters on many videos.--76.18.0.54 05:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube and Censorship

I suggest we should put in a paragraph about YouTube and their censoring of many YouTube artists. Such evidence is the user 'NickGisburne' who made a video quoting the Quran and had his entire account suspended for simply offending people. Other acts of censorship by YouTube is widely seen.

Get a verifiable source for that unsubstantiated assertion or else your edit will probably be challenged and deleted. See Wikipedia:Verifiability.--Coolcaesar 18:03, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Office of Drug Policy paragraph

I really think the ONDCP paragraph is a bit too dailykos for wikipedia. 'Propaganda' is a loaded word, and not particularly neutral at that. Is there a better way to write that paragraph that makes it look less like an incidious plot and more like an encyclopedia entry? Kripto 09:16, 20 January 2007 (UTC)kripto[reply]

Praising YouTube

This chick Brooker Allyson is probably one of the biggest under-dog that this society has to offer: lost her father while still young; guidance conselor told her she had no chance of success in life; not too bright and works in a resturant (can’t even pay rent sometimes); and not that great-looking. I’d say she caught a bad-break in life.

Yet she’s positive, energetic/hyperactive, and has natural talent of being wacky. And this YouTube technology gave this woman with only a highschool education a gateway to share her only 2 talents and passion (making movies and being wacky) to the rest of the world. The large collection of media she made, after a while, became such a big hit -- entertaining tens-of-millions all around the world -- a talent agent from MTV tracked her down and gave her a job. P.S. This recent purchase of YouTube by Google in my opinion is a deathblow to Yahoo – wouldn’t recommend shorting Yahoo stock neither.Yahoo lost the global search engine battle due to their inferior algorithm and turned to making technology that will gather local wisdom instead. They developed a similar but unpopular version of YouTube after 2 years of work. Google turned around and just bought YouTube (for a meager 2 billion dollars, from 2 kids still in college), OUCH! This world is cruel, but never-the-less beautiful, I think… wait, this comment is not portable to everything.

Do you people realize that sites like ifilm a)existed before Youtube and b) offered pretty much the exact same service? It's not the technology that made Youtube huge, it's the built-in audience. The reason there is such a large audience is because Youtube makes no effort to purge copyrighted material. They fileter porn, they filter violence, but they leave up clips from SNL, the Daily show, et. al. because that's what brings the visitors. With millions of people on the site, people are bound to get a portion of that audience to look at their home made vids.
I think everyone going ga-ga for Youtube is a bit much. The potential to use the web for self expression has always been there, before youtube even existed. All youtube did was make it easy for lazy peolpe who don't want to learn how to put up their own content on the web to do so. The only thing is, by postsing on youtube, your video might get thousands of views, but Youtube ghets all the web traffic. That's why google gave a billion dollars to the web site owners, not the people who actually make the content on the site.

You Tube is Different

Suggestion for Notable

I came to find out about N64Kids after seeing them on a tv commercial. I was surprised not to find them. It should be added to the notable list which would mean starting a new page, which I don't have the proper skills to do. N64Kids has been on Jay Leno and VH1. They have a web site here. JoyceD 04:01, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was mistaken; there's an entry here N64_Kid I just updated my email address, though, so I'm blocked from editing the page. JoyceD 04:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox Website

The name YouTube may refer to the company and the website. Moreover the article begin saying "YouTube is a popular free video sharing Web site " so I think having an {{Infobox Website}} is not incoherent. 16@r 20:18, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

yes though when it says youtube.com was founded feb2005, it means the company. the site went online only on nov2005 (according to the article).capi 00:13, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

incorrect info in article

"...FlashPlayer 8, which uses On2 Technologies' VP6 video codec, providing a large increase in video quality compared to FlashPlayer 7..." "Without this new technology, it's unlikely YouTube would have taken off as fast as it did."

Youtube video player SWF file is version 7 and the video codec used is Sorenson H.263. It could have been version 8 and VP6, but it isn't. 85.107.157.16 20:26, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly related, the article mentions an update causing videos not to start. The only such problem I've noticed is it tells me I don't have Flash (though I can grab the video link from the source code and view it), and this seems to be a Flash Player bug, not a site problem. 75.153.221.227 08:40, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Add to famous youtube users

DCLugi, creator of the Someone Tell Sam Jackson He's My Bro video, gets thousands of views for his videos every week.

Zach Braff has a few posts on youtube, may be worth a mention.

Also out of interest, how come I can't edit this page? Thanks

Needs Citations

I just added to the Famous Users Section, mentioning the free hugs campaign and the sick puppies etc. but I didn't have time to put in any cites, can someone please add some.Spec ops commando 01:39, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Advertising

Youtube ran considerable ads wit adbrite and they had a huge IPOD giveaway promotiont hing too. I think it was a free ipod every day and they where big advertisers with adbrite. I remember adbrite used to send out in there emails when youtube started getting a little more popular that they did heavy advertisign with adbrite.. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.174.64.142 (talk) 08:56, 12 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Spin-offs?

What about mentioning that some websites have spawned from YouTube's succes, also using You- or -Tube in their name?--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:27, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you can verify them, if they're notable, and if they're RELEVANT, then yes. Remember to get reliable sources. Please cite to a newspaper or magazine, by page, preferably; you can get the page numbers out of ProQuest eLibrary. --Coolcaesar 17:40, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

YooTube

What does anyone know about a site called YooTube. It looks the same as YouTube but with the different spelling? Tim Long 02:53, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't visit these spin off sites. Many are link farms, but some may contain malware. For example, Yootube.info is highly suspicious. Some reports [1] suggest yooutube.info installs adware by using a trojan with windows media player. The homepage appears to be phishing youtube.com. When I visited (with javascript and flash turned off), the only link on the page took me to a site which was very suspicious, probably producing pop-ups and possibly worse (if I had javascript on), and probably linking to infected windows media files.
Be suspicious of everything on the internet. --h2g2bob 05:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why it's bad to let people post anything

Poseidon01 21:15, 19 December 2006 (UTC) I have used you tube and have a very bad understanding of it this website just puts garbage on it like inapropreate videos that aren't even blocked. They need better protection from bad videos. Otherwise I like it for trailers and video clips. Is it true they acually sold it to google? People have been saying that all day.[reply]

Google bought Youtube a month ago. dposse 02:15, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Google has bought them. And Youtube will continue to post copyrighted material (I have no problem with that!) and Google will take on the legal costs. The marginal benifits greatly outweigh the marginal costs.

First uploads?

The earliest date for videos I have been able to find are from user BootieChrist. April 24, 2005 is the date of the uploads. Here is a link to one of the videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebKlgRwnpFY

Of course the videos stink, but for historical perspective, it may be good to include a link to an early video. Can anyone find an older video? Alf rules 04:34, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found this video from user jawed (Jawed Karim, co-founder of YouTube) called "Me at the zoo" which was uploaded on April 23, 2005, and is labeled as the first video uploaded to YouTube. It is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw

The photograph issue again

This is just to raise the issue again since the previous discussion was archived. If anyone lives in San Bruno near YouTube, please take a good picture of the new headquarters if you get the chance. I assume the trees have lost their leaves now so it should be easier. I am too busy myself to drive into the vicinity of YouTube, find public parking on the street in the residential neighborhood half a mile away (since YouTube picked an office park with no public parking and poor mass transit access) and walk all the way into the complex to get a good shot. Again, I strongly suspect YouTube picked its current location (the former headquarters of the Gap) specifically for privacy (which its former headquarters in the attic of the pizza parlor clearly lacked). --Coolcaesar 07:08, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of Name

Does anyone know why it's called YouTube? My little brother asked me if it was related to Senator Ted's Series of Tubes speech, and, while I know it predates that, I couldn't give him an answer and wikipedia didn't have one for me. Kingkiki217 18:26, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Favorites allowed?

Does anyone know the limit to how many favorites you're allowed? I got up to 304, then I got a message saying limit reached. Now, even though I've removed loads (I'm down to 200), it still displays the message.

Should this "limit" be mentioned on the article with a link? --rjcuk 00:14, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube Bug Leaks Passwords To Homepage

I'm trying to find another reference to "YouTube Bug Leaks Passwords To Homepage" it's an article that describes how YouTube leaked it's users passwords to the site. This is an extremely important event in YouTube history because every user appears to be affected and the ramifications of every users password, email address and full name been leaked to the Internet is huge. I tried adding this to the Wiki but you know what it's like trying to add controversial content to a Wiki. If you find another reference to this event it would be valuable to add it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.167.111.109 (talk) 00:36, 2 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Videos ending prematurely

I got fed up with this problem because I had to use Javimoya's Video Downloader on many videos just to watch it's full content! Basically, it just downloads a portion of the video, the downloading grinds to a halt then sooner or later the whole bar fills with red colour and the player shows the two buttons that allow you to share or watch the video again. It happened to me several times that I remembered that this article had some content that addressed this issue. I think it happens when YouTube's servers are overloaded or if one's internet connection is horrible or overloaded. Reloading the page with normal/forced refresh sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I've readded this issue to the technical limitations section, albeit with just enough info to be a "section stub". Some editting help is appreciated. --Bruin_rrss23 (talk) 15:13, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Viacom

As of Feb. '07, Viacom has ordered youtube to remove 100,000 videos that they own the copyright to. This is the largest number of videos requested to be taken down.

Acoustic Fingerprints

In October of '06 Youtube agreed to use filtering software to stop copyrighted music from appearing on Youtube. It's February of '07 and they still haven't done it. Viacom is forcing them to remove any vicaom videos from the site because of this.

Clips of teachers that went "angry" at school

There were numerous reports of users uploading clips of teachers without consent, including angry teachers. For example, a user used hidden cam to show a teacher making a violent outburst because a student brought a cell phone, and he broke it. When the officials found out about this, they felt violated and had to deal with this situation. Look at LATimes.com or Google, and see for yourself. —Gh87 03:06, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

3rd party application

There isn't currently a link to any example of a third party application for downloading Youtube videos. I would've added a link, but this page is protected. A good example is youtube-dl, a cross-platform python script(program) under the MIT license. I'm not trying to advertise for them or anything, I just use it and think it's a simple, well-written program that (perhaps) more people should know about. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 160.36.119.134 (talk) 06:06, 9 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
