Revision as of 16:03, 19 January 2023
The hooks below have been approved by a human (Vanamonde) and will be automatically added to the DYK template at the appropriate time. Click here for an example of what these hooks will look like on the main page – you may wish to remove this template for a more accurate example, if you do ensure to add it back. |
DYK queue status
Current time: 16:32, 16 November 2024 (UTC) Update frequency: once every 24 hours Last updated: 16 hours ago() |
Note: Because a preponderance of hooks on the approved nominations page are biographies or U.S.-related, it is usually appropriate to have several hooks on biographies or U.S. topics in any given set, but never more than half from either category. Further information is available at Wikipedia:Did you know/Supplementary guidelines#J. Thanks.
Tips on assembling sets can be found at Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas.
Hooks
- ... that the Tomb of Aegisthus (pictured) helped to settle the 'Helladic Heresy' over the relationship between Minoan and Mycenaean civilisation?
- ... that before pursuing a career in music, Lauren Jenkins was the host of a wrestling television show?
- ... that John Lennon believed that the Rolling Stones' 1978 hit "Miss You" was based on a sped-up version of his 1974 song "Scared"?
- ... that Philip Wodehouse spent 4 months chasing after HMS Peterel across the Mediterranean before catching up with the ship and taking over command from Bartholomew James?
- ... that American first lady Lou Henry Hoover secretly sent money to families in need during the Great Depression?
- ... that a bloodied fingerprint on newspaper was the central piece of evidence in the murder of Vivianne Ruiz?
- ... that the Iowa Colored Cowboys played softball for audiences of over a thousand people, in an atmosphere similar to a Harlem Globetrotters show?
- ... that Vice-Admiral Gerald Marescaux was reprimanded for wearing pyjamas?

Credit templates
You can also give out credits using the following templates:
- Article talk page: ({{DYK talk}})
{{DYK talk|16 November|2024|entry= ... that ...?|nompage=Template:Did you know nominations/Article name}}
(check if small style templates in use, if so add|small=yes
parm) - Article creator/expander's talk page: ({{UpdatedDYK}})
{{subst:UpdatedDYK|16 November|2024|Article name}}--~~~~
- Nominator's talk page: ({{UpdatedDYKNom}})
{{subst:UpdatedDYKNom|16 November|2024|Article name}}--~~~~
- Notify contributor about addition to a Portal: (can be modified for more than one portal) – ({{UpdatedDYKportal}})
{{subst:UpdatedDYKportal|Article name|Portal:Portal name}}--~~~~
- Note that portal notifications are only done if you have taken the trouble to add the DYK hook to a relevant portal, which is entirely optional. The other notifications must be done before the preparation area page can be reset.
Images
- Don't forget to add an {{mprotected}} notice to the image description page (or {{C-uploaded}} plus a copy of the author attribution and the licence tag if you have uploaded a temporary copy from Commons).
- Alternatively, consider crediting the image file page even if the file is from Commons:
{{DYKfile|16 November|2024}}
Manually posting the new update (if the bot is down)
- Note: This is the manual method. When using DYKUpdateBot, the bot should automate all of the following except steps 1 and 11.
- Make sure the image/media for the hooks to be loaded is on English Wikipedia or protected on Commons. If the image/file is on Commons and not protected, upload it to En and tag it with {{c-uploaded}}. You do not need to protect the picture; this is done automatically because of the cascading protection of the Main Page. Alternatively, if you are an admin at Commons you can protect the picture/file at Commons instead of uploading to En.
- Update T:DYK from the current queue.
- Purge the cache of the Main Page to make sure the new entries appear.
- Reset the DYK time.
- Increment the next queue pointer.
- Copy the previous set of hooks (not the new set just promoted to the front page) to the archive. Be sure to copy the final revision of the set (it should be the last diff on the T:DYK page before your update), and place the timestamp of the DYK update you just made above it. Please include the picture/file.
- Check if the previous picture/file was temporarily uploaded from Commons for display on the Main Page, and delete it from En if so.
- On the local description page of the picture/file for the previous set of hooks, add
{{DYKfile|16 November|2024|type=image}}
(occasionally replacingimage
withvideo
where appropriate). Note that, like the archives, this will create a one-day misalignment between the date on the file page and the date it actually appeared in DYK. - If you have time, please do the credits for the hooks just promoted (see "Credits" section above).
- Clear the queue you just promoted hooks from with
{{User:DYKUpdateBot/REMOVE THIS LINE}}
. - If you have time, check if there are any full preparation areas. Check the hooks for errors, and promote them to the next empty numbered queue if they're good. Clear the prep you took hooks from to look like this. Tag the numbered queue with
{{DYKbotdo|~~~}}
once the queue is loaded and ready.
