Revision as of 07:42, 20 October 2024
The following Worldwide cyclone seasons are visual representations of tropical cyclogenesis during a given calendar through timelines (in addition to data in tabular format, giving more general data). Summarizing these are difficult due to the inconsistencies of tropical meteorology across different basins with examples being intensity estimation as well as it's protocols and constraints (e.g the usage of 1-minute, 3-minute and 10-minute sustained winds in various basins). To solve this, I have decided to make timelines based on their classifications via the Saffir-simpson scale (SSWS/SSHWS); which requires the 1-minute sustained winds of tropical cyclones and therefore designation from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and other meteorological agencies that predominantly use such means of estimation.
As of November 2020, I have made these timelines going back to the beginning of the HURDAT era (1950-Present). Note that the further back in time one travels, the more inconsistent available data becomes; especially prior to 1980. This leads to a notable disparity in (recorded) activity between the 2010s (889 Nameable storms) and the 1950s (453 Nameable storms) despite the margin likely being less significant had meteorologists obtained the technology we have in more modern times to better estimate the intensities (and formations) of tropical cyclones. Due to this, I have made these in consideration of only years Post-1980 to be "reliable" as a result of the rapid decline in data in various basins prior to this period. Note: the main source for Pre-1950 timelines will be the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) for basins lacking any significant accessible data (e.g NIO, SHEM).
Going forward, I plan to add more years prior to 1950 as time goes on. I'll also be gradually updating these for ongoing years as the tropics progress and continue to form more cyclones. With all that being said, happy viewing and I hope you like it. Feel free to let me know of any errors, questions, comments and/or concerns!

The 2020s is the current decade of the calendar year system, with 332 total cyclones forming thus far. Of those cyclones, 309 were nameable, with 127 hurricanes and 57 major hurricanes: 12 of which achieving Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The strongest storm of the decade is Surigae in 2021, with an intensity of 882 mbar (26.05 inHg) and 195 mph (315 km/h) 1-minute maximum sustained winds.

The 2010s decade saw an uptick in raw activity from the previous decade with 973 total cyclones, 889 of which nameable and 477 hurricane-equivalent cyclones. In addition, 263 major hurricanes formed with 63 becoming Category 5 tropical cyclones. The most active year of the decade was 2018, having attained 118 total cyclones and 107 nameable storms; both of which former-records before being surpassed by 2020. On the other hand, 2010 was the least active of the decade. The strongest storm of the decade was Patricia in 2015, which reached a anomalously intense pressure of 872 mbar (25.75 inHg), accompanied by 1-minute sustained winds of 215 mph (345 km/h).
The decade was very well-balanced in terms of ceiling intensity, strength and activity in the sense that there was some years on either side of the spectrum. Examples include the near-record inactivity of 2010 when in comparison with the near-record activity of 2018. Another good comparison is the overall lack of strength in 2017 with the high amount of major hurricane-equivalent storms two years prior, in 2015.
