Cloud9 Mobile Communications, a subsidiary of Wire9 Telecom, is a mobile phone company based in the Isle of Man.[1]

Locations

Isle of Man

Cloud9 will be introducing a new mobile service with local Internet Service Providers. Mobile telephones will transfer to Voice over Internet Protocol when near Wi-Fi Hotspots. Wire9 is currently developing converged telecommunications and associated services in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar.[2]

The first stage of Cloud9's Isle of Man mobile network launch will be limited to consumers who have registered on the Cloud9 website. Last year the Manx public were given the opportunity to register for pre-launch information in return for half-priced calls to other Cloud9 users for the first year of the network. These consumers will have the opportunity to join the network one month before the full public launch and benefit from special launch promotions.[3]

Other Locations

Other territories planned for future roll-out include Gibraltar and Jamaica.

Delays

Despite making their first network test calls in December 06, Cloud9 have been forced to delay their March 07 launch plans for the Isle of Man. This was due to a last minute request to change the way 999 Emergency calls were handled.

Previous project plans were originally negotiated with The Isle of Man Government Department of Home Affairs who manage the Island’s emergency call service. These would have enabled a March 07 launch for Cloud9.

Detailed discussions between Cloud9, The Department of Home Affairs, Cable & Wireless, Manx Telecom and the Communications Commission have been in full force in recent weeks and an agreement on the delivery of 999 calls in line with the revised requirements of the Department of Home Affairs is imminent. If this agreement is reached, then Cloud9 will be able to launch their network in April 07.
