Earthquake Picture
Can we get a different picture for the In The News section on the earthquake? The current one makes it look like China has acne. « Aaron Rotenberg « Talk « 13:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
:What method of displaying an earthquakes shock wave and epicentre would you suggest over the current one? ::I think that's probably the best we can get. Would you care to make a better one? Lunakeet 14:34, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
:::Personally I think the current one is ideal, the gradient provides far more visual information then outward flowing rings would provide, and the red is a good contrast to the map itself. ☯Ferdia O'Brien (T)/(C) 14:38, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
::::What about an image of the damage, rather than a map? Modest Genius talk 18:58, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
::::: Is there one that looks good at 100px and is free of copyright issues? Pls post at WP:ITN/C. --199.71.174.100 (talk) 21:49, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

:::The red contrast is good, but the contrast from the yellow spot against the red is ugly. The map could be made more clear as a thumbnail by thickening the red circle that shows the full extent, and by removing the yellow dot. A point showing the exact location of the epicenter isn't very meaningful on a 100x85 scale anyway. GracenotesT § 20:01, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
::I agree. The yellow dot is ugly. It should be green, the opposite of red on the colo(u)r wheel- and not a square. Here... the right version (imho) looks better as a thumbnail. Any suggestions?
: Does the fading red mean anything? Why is it such a perfect circle? The shape is giving a false depiction of the areas affected by the earthquake.
: I think it's better to simply colour SiChuan red. Where the dead and injured are located is germane. Where the epicentre is on the map is not really that important for ITN. --199.71.174.100 (talk) 21:39, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

There is also a general problem of exageration. The dangerous shaking only goes out a few hundred km , while seeing a giant red halo would suggest to me that 2/3rd of China is at risk. Dragons flight (talk) 21:52, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

:I suggest removing the yellow square and putting some kind of a black crosshair or a dark red (maroon) circle. ~RayLast «Talk!» 16:37, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
::That makes sense. Lunakeet 13:22, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Error reports
Please post error reports regarding only what is currently on the Main Page or on Main Page/Tomorrow here.
For general main page discussions, go to Talk:Main Page.

Main Page error reports

To report an error you have noticed on the current Main Page or tomorrow's Main Page please add it to the appropriate section below. You can do this by pressing the [edit] button to the right of the appropriate section's heading. Also, please sign your post using four tildes (~~~~)

Note that the current date and time are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may not coincide with your local time zone. The next day's featured article of the day, picture of the day, and anniversaries update at midnight (00:00) according to UTC. The current time is 03:42 on November 16, 2024 (UTC). (Update)

Once an error has been fixed, the error report will be removed from this page; please check the page's history to verify that the error has been rectified and for any other comments the administrator may have made. Lengthy discussions should not take place here, and should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere.

References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error, and a suggested rewording is helpful with a stylistic complaint. The main page usually defers to supporting pages when there is disagreement, so it is best to achieve consensus and make any necessary changes there first.

Why no picture?

No error, but I do believe that a picture could make some benefits here. --Soetermans (talk) 11:48, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The photo that is currently there is the only one that is free. ffm 12:28, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
