The untitled spinoff of the hit primetime soap Melrose Place is about young adults living in an apartment complex. It is the fifth series in the Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise created by Darren Star. The show will premiere in the US on The CW in the Fall 2009 season. Smallville producers, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer are helming the pilot script, and will be the executive producers on the series.

Production

The new Melrose Place will be having more on-location shoots centered around the real Melrose areas of Los Angeles that wasn't shown too much in the previous installement. Filming will commence in April.

Development

On September 23, 2008, Marc Malkin of E! Online reported on the possibility of a new Melrose Place spin-off in the vein of the new Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off series 90210. [1] According to Malkin, former Melrose Place star Lisa Rinna was at TV Guide's post-Emmy party and was quoted as saying "I've heard a rumor of them bringing back the show like they did 90210" and "I heard that it's somewhere at The CW." When asked if she would be willing to reprise her role as Taylor McBride in a new series, Rinna said "I would do it in a heartbeat."

However, Malkin also reports that "a rep for the CW insists there are no plans to bring back Melrose Place."

On October 11, TV Guide reported that series creator Darren Star said that the spin-off was a possibility that he'd be interested in pursuing and acknowledged that it has been up for discussion. However, he also noted that no official discussions about the spinoff have taken place.[2] Later that month The CW and CBS Paramount Network Television said they are in fact "exploring" the possibility of creating a new version of the series.[3][4] On October 31, 2008, Ace Show Biz reported that when it comes to the spin-off, Jennie Garth (who was instrumental in launching the original Melrose Place) does not plan to appear as her character Kelly Taylor. Kelly Rutherford, who played Megan on the original series, stated there is a possibility of her reprising her Melrose Place role. Lisa Rinna, who played Taylor McBride on the original series, stated that she would "definitely" reprise her role if asked. Josie Bissett confirmed she would love to resurface into the role of Jane Mancini if offered the chance.

On December 31, 2008, it was reported that Heather Locklear is being courted to reprise the role of Amanda Woodward in the new spin-off.[5]

The CW entertainment boss Dawn Ostroff says she hasn't found a head writer for the new Melrose. Ostroff also told reporters that unlike the original series, the Melrose remake will try to capture life in the Melrose neighborhood. In regards to casting, Ostroff says the network hasn't spoken to anyone yet. "Heather [Locklear] would be one of the people you talk about because when you think of Melrose," she says, "one of the first people think of is Heather." [6]

On January 14, 2009, E! reported that Grant Show, who portrayed cast member Jake Hanson (who was instrumental in starting Melrose), stated that he is up for portraying his Melrose character on the new spinoff.[7] However, Show has also stated that he would be most likely to return if Jennie Garth appeared as Kelly Taylor, in order to further resolve the story line between their characters.[8]

On January 19, 2009, Entertainment Weekly reported that The CW had been talking with Smallville show-runners Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin about shepherding the update. [9]

On February 6, 2009, Entertainment Weekly confirmed Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer were now officially installed as showrunners/Head Writers of the spin-off. They also revealed the names and descriptions of the characters who would be featured on the series, including the son of Grant Show's character Jake Hanson, David Patterson.[10]

On February 24, 2009, E! Online reported that the CW honchos have greenlighted the pilot episode of Melrose Place 2.0. The remake will follow the original formula and chronicle a group of twentysomethings dwelling in Los Angeles' perpetually trendy Melrose neighborhood. Davis Guggenheim, who directed and won an Academy Award for An Inconvenient Truth, will helm the pilot episode. Married to Elisabeth Shue, Guggenheim boasts the added bonus of being brother-in-law to Billy Campbell himself, Andrew Shue. [11]

On March 27, 2009, E! Online had spoken with original Melrose Place alum Vanessa Williams who played Rhonda Blair during the first season. Williams had expressed great interest in returning to her role on the new show if an opprtunity is presented. At the Kids' Choice Awards, Williams stated "Rhonda could come back and own her own line of studio workout places and doing Pilates and married with children. It would be great." [12]

Casting

On February 25, 2009, The Hollywood Reporter reported the first actor cast in the new Melrose Place. Swingtown veteran Michael Rady has landed the Billy-like role of 25-year-old aspiring filmmaker Jonah Miller. He landed the part on Wednesday, a day after the CW officially green-lighted the pilot.[13]

On February 27, 2009, Variety reported that actress Katie Cassidy has landed the Amanda-like role of sharp-tongued publicist Ella Flynn. Cassidy is known for her guest roles on shows like Supernatural and as Zoe on 7th Heaven. [14][15]

On March 2, 2009, a CW insider informed TV website Zap2it.com that Mischa Barton of The O.C. fame is testing for a role on the show and that the network is "very excited about her." It is unclear what role she is testing for, however. [16]

On March 9, 2009, Entertainment Weekly reported that singer/actress Ashlee Simpson-Wentz was the latest new tenant to be moving into Melrose Place. She will portray the role of Violet Foster, small-town girl who comes to L.A. with a secret. The character parallels a combination between Melrose originals Sydney Andrews (Laura Leighton) and Sandy Harling (Amy Locane).[17]

On March 12, 2009, The Hollywood Reporter stated Mischa Barton would not be joining the cast of Melrose Place but that however she has been cast on another show for the Network's fall line up, A Beautiful Life.[18]

On March 17, 2009, Cloverfield star Jessica Lucas had been cast to play the wealthy and beautiful elementary school teacher Riley Richmond according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lucas recently guest starred on 90210 as undercover cop Kimberly McIntyre. [19]

On March 18, 2009, Entertainment Weekly reported that original star Heather Locklear decided not to return to the new Melrose Place. According to a rep of Locklear, the reason she passed on the chance to return was because there wasn't a way to bring Amanda back that made sense. [20]

On March 24th, 2009, The Hollywood Reporter reported former model Colin Egglesfield had been cast as surfer dude and chef Auggie Kirkpatrick. Egglesfield portrayed Josh Madden on the ABC soap opera All My Children, also on this same day actress Stephanie Jacobsen from Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles has been cast to play the role of Lauren Bishop, a med student at UCLA, who is living a double life as a high-end call girl. [21]

On March 25th, 2009, TV Guide (magazine) reported that 90210 (TV series) star Ryan Eggold will make crossovers to Melrose Place as his 90210 character "Ryan Matthews". [22]
