Seascale is a beach-resort, village and civil parish in the Borough of Copeland in Cumbria, England. It has a population of 1,747.[1] The place-name indicates that it was inhabited by Norse settlers, probably before 1000 AD, but the community remained insignificant until the development of a railway line along the coast from Whitehaven to Barrow in Furness in Victorian times, following which, in the 1850s, it was developed as a seaside resort. It was further developed from the 1940s onward as a dormitory community for the nearby Windscale and Calder Hall nuclear sites (later combined as Sellafield). As a result, in the 1950s it was known as "the brainiest town in Britain".[2]
The village is close to the A595 and is served by Seascale railway station on what is now called the Cumbrian Coast Line.
