Swan is a brand of cigarette rolling papers available in the UK and Ireland. This company also produces matches, Swan Vestas, lighters, pipe cleaners, rolling machines, cigarette filters, flints, lighter gas and fluid.[1]
The Swan company is based in High Wycombe[2] and is a subsidiary of Swedish Match
Safety Issues
Health issues about smoking are well known and documented, but there are other practical concerns about Health & Safety issues with associated products such as refill cans of lighter gas and fluid and lighters containing these flammable substances.
These are frequently abused by people who inhale the vapors from the gas/fluid as an intoxicant. This has very serious side-effects and can lead to death and should not be attempted.
Another problem with lighters and lighter gas and fluid refills is the possibility of them leaking[3] and causing a safety issue. It is because of this possible leakage problem, as well as terrorist worries, that lighter gas and fluid refills for lighters are not permitted on one’s person or in checked or carry-on baggage for aircraft flights.
British Airways,[4] BAA Heathrow Airport[5] and the TSA - (Transportation Security Administration in the USA)[6] have all decided the risk of possible leakage from such items is so high they prohibited them completely from any Hold or Hand luggage, commonly referred to as Carry-On in North America.
Anecdotal evidence of Lighter Fluid Refills leaking[3] can also be found online. Care should be taken when transporting such items, you should make sure the can of Lighter Refill Fluid is not leaking when inverted (and held for a while) at the point and time of purchase. Care should also be taken to store the lighter gas and fluid refill cans safely, away from direct heat, in an upright position when possible. Special attention should be taken to ensure the nozzle is safely and correctly closed. These are designed to be child proof.
If any fluid or gas does leak, place the item in a safe location outside in open air to allow the fluid, or gas, to safely evaporate. If the contents leaks onto your skin, treat as a chemical irritant[7] and seek advice as soon as possible after first washing the effected area in running water.
Any electrical items that come into contact with leaking Lighter Fluid should not be switched on or used; Lighter Fluid can act as a solvent and corrode the Electronic circuits, making the item dangerous. There may be a risk of fire or an electrical shock.
